Golden Visas, contests: How Dubai attracted over 350 gaming firms

Hundreds of game developing companies have set up their bases in Dubai after the emirate announced a specialised programme for the industry. The city is now home to more than 350 companies, with 260 of them categorised as specialised game developers. Launched in November 2023, the Dubai Programme for Gaming 2033 (DPG33) has seen more than 60 new companies established in the emirate, of which 12 per cent are large global companies. This marks a 16.6 per cent growth rate in the number of companies in the industry since the launch of the programme. The gaming industry has emerged as one of Dubai's most promising economic sectors in recent years. Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the DPG33 to position Dubai among the world's top 10 global gaming hubs over the next decade, with 30,000 new jobs and a $1 billion boost to GDP by 2033. The programme is overseen by Dubai Future Foundation (DFF). According to Khalfan Belhoul, CEO of DFF, the gaming sector 'holds unprecedented economic potential', and Dubai will offer opportunities to innovators and creators. 'The industry offers a wealth of unprecedented opportunities thanks to the supportive ecosystem for entrepreneurs and innovative ideas in advanced technology sectors, particularly game development, which is a key driver in enhancing Dubai's global competitiveness and in achieving the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda,' he said. As part of this, a gaming certification and long-term residency is granted to accomplished and talented professionals in the video game industry. In September last year, the UAE's 10-year Golden Visa programme was expanded to include top gamers, content creators, and industry professionals. As part of these efforts, several events and competitions have been held in Dubai this year. Last month, Dubai Police collaborated with the Dubai Esports and Games Festival to conduct a competition where participants were tasked with creating a game to win a portion of the Dh10,000 prize pool. In April, over 800 C-Suite executives and enthusiasts from 32 countries gathered for a gaming convention in the emirate.

DEWA Expands Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park Capacity to 3,860MW

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has ramped up the total production capacity of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park to 3,860 megawatts (MW), marking a major step forward in the emirate's clean energy transition. Announced by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, the increase includes 800MW added this year from the park's sixth phase. Clean energy now accounts for roughly 21.5% of DEWA's total production capacity. Al Tayer said the expansion supports Dubai's long-term strategies to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. 'The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is our key project to realise this vision and achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050,' he stated. Launched in 2013 with a modest 13MW capacity, the solar park has grown through multiple phases using photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies. Notably, the fourth phase introduced hybrid solar systems, while the fifth and sixth phases continued expanding PV output. DEWA plans to raise the park's capacity to 7,260MW by 2030, which would supply 34% of the utility's total energy mix from clean sources. This transition is expected to cut carbon emissions by around eight million tonnes annually. Looking ahead, DEWA has invited global developers to participate in the seventh phase of the solar park. Set to feature a 1,600MW PV system and a 1,000MW battery storage system, the project will be one of the world's largest solar-plus-storage initiatives. The solar park is implemented under the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, reinforcing Dubai's position as a regional leader in renewable energy innovation. News Source: Emirates News Agency

e& UAE Sets Global Benchmark by Achieving 600Mbps Uplink Speed on Live 5G Network

e& UAE has set a new global standard in 5G connectivity, achieving an unprecedented uplink speed of 600Mbps on a live commercial network—marking a major milestone in the evolution of 5G-Advanced technology. The breakthrough was accomplished by aggregating the 2100MHz and C-band frequencies in the FR1 range and deploying three transmit antennas (3Tx) on a commercial Customer Premises Equipment (CPE). Fully aligned with 3GPP Release 17 standards, the deployment took place at a live 5G site in the UAE. This record-setting uplink speed is a critical step forward for uplink-intensive applications, enabling real-time data uploads for smart factories, drone surveillance, cloud-hosted collaboration, and immersive AR/VR experiences. For content creators and consumers, the enhanced speeds mean faster uploads of high-definition videos and seamless cloud gaming. 'This isn't just a technological breakthrough—it's a strategic leap,' said Abdulrahman Al Humaidan, Vice President of Fixed Access Network at e& UAE. 'We're setting the stage for a hyper-fast, uplink-driven digital world, reinforcing the UAE's position as a global tech hub.' The achievement showcases the practical readiness of 5G-Advanced networks, powered by features like enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). It also lays the groundwork for a new wave of smart connectivity, as the industry moves toward scalable and energy-efficient network deployments. With this advancement, e& UAE has not only raised the bar for global telecom standards but also unlocked new potential for enterprises and consumers alike, paving the way for a truly connected future.
