Unreleased Beyonce music stolen from car in Atlanta
Computer drives containing unreleased music by US superstar Beyonce and plans related to her concerts were stolen last week in Atlanta, police said Monday, with a suspect still at large. The items were stolen from a rental car used by Beyonce's choreographer and a dancer on July 8, two days before the pop icon kicked off the Atlanta leg of her 'Cowboy Carter' tour, a police incident report said. Choreographer Christopher Grant, 37, told police that he returned to the car to find its rear-window smashed and their luggage stolen.
Inside were multiple jump drives that 'contained water marked music, some un-released music, footage plans for the show, and past and future set list (sic),' the report said. Also missing were an Apple MacBook, headphones and several items of luxury clothing.
Police investigated an area where the MacBook and headphones had pinged their location, but the report did not mention any items being recovered. Atlanta Police said in an online statement that a warrant had been issued for an unnamed suspect's arrest, but that the suspect remained at large. The 'Cowboy Carter' tour kicked off in April after the global superstar took home her first 'Album of the Year' Grammy for the 2024 album.
The sweeping country-themed work saw Beyonce stake out musical territory in a different genre from much of her previous discography. The ambitious, historically rooted album also aimed to elevate and showcase the work of other Black artists in country music, whose rich contributions the industry has repeatedly sidelined. As her stadium tour to promote the album winds down, Beyonce ended her four-night stint in Atlanta on Monday, with two final performances set for late July in Las Vegas.— AFP

UK police arrest scores of Palestine Action supporters
LONDON: Pro-Palestinian supporters hold placards and wave flags on Downing Street in central London, on July 19, 2025.-- AFP LONDON: UK police arrested over 100 people in London and other cities for supporting Palestine Action in a third consecutive weekend of protests over the government's decision to ban the activist group using anti-terror laws. Some 55 people were held at a demonstration in London's Parliament Square under the Terrorism Act 2000 for displaying signs supporting Palestine Action, the Metropolitan Police said. The protesters held up placards reading: 'I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.' Another nine were detained at a separate London march, and a further eight were held in Truro in Cornwall. Other protests were held in northwestern Manchester where 16 people were detained, in western Bristol where another 17 were arrested, and in the Scottish capital Edinburgh, police said. The rallies were organized by campaign group Defend Our Juries, which had said they were intended to 'defy' the ban. Since the Palestine Action ban kicked in on July 5, police have warned that expressing support for the group was now a crime, after a last-ditch High Court challenge failed to stop its proscription becoming law. The government announced plans for the ban under the 2000 Terrorism Act days after activists from the group claimed to be behind a break-in at an air force base in southern England. Two aircraft there were sprayed with red paint, causing an estimated £7 million ($9.55 million) in damage. Four people charged in relation to the incident remain in custody. Palestine Action has condemned its outlawing—which makes it a criminal offence to belong to or support the group, punishable by up to 14 years in prison—as an attack on free speech.—AFP

Adele opens up about her powerful journey beyond weight loss
LOS ANGELES, July 20: Pop superstar Adele has been open and candid about her dramatic weight loss, which she revealed publicly in 2020. The 'Hello' singer lost approximately 100 pounds over two years, sharing her transformation with fans via Instagram. Since then, she has spoken about the lifestyle changes behind her journey and the motivation that drove her. In an October 2021 interview with British Vogue, Adele explained that her focus was never simply on losing weight, but rather on building strength and dedicating time for herself without distractions. 'It was never about losing weight, it was always about becoming strong and giving myself as much time every day without my phone,' she said. The 16-time Grammy winner also addressed the intense public scrutiny surrounding her changing body. 'My body's been objectified my entire career. It's not just now,' Adele told Vogue. 'I understand why it's a shock. I understand why some women, especially, were hurt. Visually, I represented a lot of women. But I'm still the same person.' Adele first surprised fans in May 2020 when she posted a birthday photo on Instagram, showcasing her slimmer figure in a fitted black mini dress. The post quickly went viral, with fans and celebrity friends praising her transformation. The singer's weight loss coincided with a nearly six-year break from music, during which she was also going through a divorce from her ex-husband, Simon Konecki, with whom she shares a son, Angelo. In her Vogue interviews, Adele revealed that she turned to fitness as a way to manage anxiety after her divorce. 'The gym became my time. I realized that when I was working out, I didn't have any anxiety. It was never about losing weight,' she said. She added that physical strength helped her work towards emotional and mental strength. She described experiencing severe anxiety attacks following her separation, saying, 'They paralyzed me completely, and made me so confused because I wouldn't be able to have any control over my body.' Working out became a key part of her healing process. Though her weight loss appeared sudden to many, Adele emphasized it was the result of consistent effort over two years. 'I got quite addicted to working out,' she said, describing a rigorous routine of weight training, hiking or boxing, and cardio exercises, supported by professional trainers. Notably, Adele stressed that she did not follow any specific diets, stating, 'Ain't done that. No intermittent fasting. Nothing. If anything, I eat more than I used to because I work out so hard.' Adele also shared how difficult it was to hear criticism from other women about her body transformation. 'The most brutal conversations were being had by other women about my body. I was very f------ disappointed with that,' she told Vogue. Despite this, she said she wasn't surprised by the scrutiny, noting her body has always been subject to objectification in the public eye. Her son Angelo was a significant motivator in her decision to improve her health. A source close to Adele told PEOPLE in 2019 that she wanted to stay healthy for her child and was committed to maintaining a new fitness routine, which she was beginning to enjoy. Despite her transformation, Adele remains a vocal advocate for body positivity, making it clear that her views have not changed. 'People have been talking about my body for 12 years. They used to talk about it before I lost weight. But yeah, whatever, I don't care,' she said. 'You don't need to be overweight to be body positive, you can be any shape or size.' She reiterated this message in her conversation with Oprah Winfrey, stating, 'I was body positive then and I'm body positive now.' Adele also emphasized that she does not feel responsible for how others perceive their own bodies, saying, 'It's not my job to validate how people feel about their bodies. I feel bad if anyone feels horrible about themselves but that's not my job. I'm trying to sort my own life out. I can't add another worry.'

Six local officials detained over Iraq deadly mall fire
NAJAF: Iraqis mourn the victims of a shopping mall fire in the city of Kut, during their funeral at the Imam Ali Shrine in Iraq's central holy city of Najaf.-- AFP BAGHDAD: Iraq has detained six local officials and suspended other public employees following a fire that killed 61 people at a shopping mall earlier this week, authorities said Saturday. The blaze, which broke out late Wednesday in a newly opened shopping mall in the eastern city of Kut, is the latest fatal disaster in a country where safety regulations are often ignored. After an initial investigation, the interior ministry said 'there was clear negligence among several officials and employees' in Kut, located around 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad. It added that three local officials, including the head of civil defense in Kut, had been detained, and 17 employees suspended from work until further notice. The Commission of Integrity, an anti-graft body, said later that security forces had detained three more officials 'over the violations that led to the fire' at the Corniche Hypermarket Mall, including the head of the violations department at Kut's municipality. Officials say their investigation is ongoing, and the number of detainees may change. Safety standards in Iraq's construction sector are often ignored, and the country—its infrastructure weakened by decades of conflict—frequently experiences fatal fires and accidents. Fires increase during the blistering summer as temperatures approach 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). The cause of the mall fire was not immediately known, but one survivor told AFP an air conditioner had exploded on the second floor before the five-storey building was rapidly engulfed in flames. Several people told AFP they lost family members—and in some cases whole families—who had gone to shop and dine at the mall days after it opened. – AFP
