There is little to no shame in being 2-1 down to England, in their backyard, with two Tests to play. Behind the scenes, Brendon McCullum thinks like a chess player, even if the execution is occasionally ninja-style. Fronting up is Ben Stokes, who will put his body on the line, wearing blows when at the crease, or bowling himself into the dust because the situation warrants it. Around these two, England have built a unit that is formidable in conditions that abet their style of play. And yet, India will be kicking themselves. For they have no real business being 2-1 down in this series. They lost a Test they shouldn't have, picked a team for a draw and won and then seemed to get the balance right on the third try, dominated the opposition in a calculated manner for the most part, and still ended up losing. This Indian team is in transition, it is well worth remembering. This is their first full series without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma , and R Ashwin , and these are giant boots to fill. Certainly, they are unfillable in the short term. But, while it is impossible to have like-for-like replacements ready and waiting, especially as the elevation to doing the business in Test cricket is a mental one as much as it is about skills, India have found some answers. Shubman Gill is scoring the runs India is missing, and a combination of all-rounders is ensuring that there are enough wicket-taking options through the 90 overs available in a day. What the team does appear to lack, though, is a vision or sense of direction that is integral to navigating any transitional phase. There will be wins and losses along the way, but a captain-coach combination that knows what its North Star is and chases it to the exclusion of all else is the only way to consistent growth.Having a vision does not mean being inflexible or sticking with the same personnel irrespective of the conditions. You cannot blame India for chopping and changing. But you have to ask what the overarching blueprint for success is, and whether it has been articulated clearly enough to the wider group. With India's last two coach-captain combinations: first Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli, and then Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma, it was clear that the pursuit of 20 wickets would supersede everything else. This may occasionally mean additional pressure on the top-order batsmen to deliver, with a longer tail in harness. But, as experts have pointed out, having a gun bowling attack that is looking for wickets at all times also results in the opposition making fewer runs, which takes a load off the batsmen.India may not have five specialist bowlers they trust to pick up wickets in foreign conditions, or even four plus Ravindra Jadeja, but deploying all-rounders to do the job leaves too many loose ends, with each player's role not being defined clearly enough. Add to this Gill's tendency to rely on fast bowlers as his primary offensive tactic, and the role of the spinner itself is diminished, setting aside for a moment the loss of a slow bowler of Ashwin's quality, control, guile and variation. It could also be argued—as has been the case in these columns for some time—that India are playing Washington Sundar out of position. It's not merely a case of him batting too low down the order to make full use of his talent, but of his very positioning as a bowler who brings batting to the table. There's no reason why he should not bat at No 3 and still bring himself into play as an off spinner. This leads to the obvious question of Karun Nair's vulnerability. Karun forced his way back into the team with a ton of runs, but Sai Sudarshan is no slouch to come in at the top, should the team insist on sticking with Washington down the order.India have given Karun a fair go, and he has not been an obvious failure, but the question the team has to ask is whether he fits into their best eleven, with a long-term view at least somewhere in the background. That answer will dictate whether Karun plays the final two Tests of this series or not.The final day rearguard action during the third Test in Lord's from the redoubtable Jadeja brought India to within 22 runs, but it should not be lost on anyone that the lower order did its thing in the first innings as India went from 376 for 6 to 387 all out.If India took a step back and looked at how the Test went, they could be reasonably satisfied from a numerical perspective. They won more sessions than they lost. But in the moments that mattered, they faltered. When the game was evenly poised, ripe for the picking, India could not press home the advantage. This is not for lack of belief, but more likely a product of indecision and tentativeness stemming from the way forward not having found its way into the DNA of each and every player that makes up this unit.

Even If You Were Jealous At One Point In Time : R Ashwin Addresses Rivalry Rumours With Harbhajan Singh

Ravichandran Ashwin has responded to long-standing speculation about tension between him and fellow Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh. Addressing the rumours in a conversation on his YouTube channel, Ashwin emphasised that jealousy is often a reflection of individual perspective. Over the years, there has been frequent chatter, especially on social media, suggesting that Harbhajan may have felt envious of Ashwin's rise in Indian cricket. Though both spinners largely played in different eras, the narrative of rivalry has persisted. "This whole jealousy bit, before I allow you to answer that, let me clarify something. People look at everything from their perspective. For example, if they are passing a comment on me, they believe that others would see the world through their eyes," Ashwin said during a teaser of the latest episode of his YouTube show Kutti Stories. Referring to the comments made online, Ashwin asked Harbhajan, "Their comments that you (Harbhajan) are jealous of this person who is interviewing you today (Ashwin), what would that be about, Bhajji pa?" Ashwin explained that such judgments are shaped by the mindset of the individuals making them and not by the reality of their relationship. He also noted that even if jealousy had ever existed between them, it would be understandable given the competitive nature of professional sport. In the same conversation, Harbhajan addressed the rumours directly and posed the question to Ashwin, "Do you think I am jealous of you? You are sitting with me today, and we have spoken at length. Do you think I am that kind of person?" Ashwin replied, "Even if you were jealous at one point in time, I think it's justified. That is my point, and I will never take it wrong because we are all human. Naturally, it is bound to be like that. Some people believe I retired because Washington Sundar is in the thick of things. All of this is the perspective of others." Ashwin recently retired as India's second-highest wicket-taker in international cricket. The candid conversation between two of India's greatest off-spinners appears to put an end to lingering assumptions about their relationship. Harbhajan Singh is currently playing the World Championship of legends and is currently living life as a broadcaster. R Ashwin has a total of 765 international wickets across all formats (537 in Tests, 156 in ODIs, and 72 in T20Is). Harbhajan Singh has a total of 711 international wickets across all formats (417 in Tests, 269 in ODIs, and 25 in T20Is).

Unassuming Jadeja thrives as senior statesman of young Indian team

Manchester, Jul 20 (PTI) Ravindra Jadeja is thriving in the role of a senior statesman of the young Indian cricket team following the retirements of the 'big three'. Alongside R Ashwin, he was the architect of India's umpteen Test wins at home but his accomplishments stayed off the radar. Virat Kohli was the undisputed superstar of that team. Now with Ashwin, Kohli and Rohit Sharma hanging their boots, Jadeja is by far the senior most member of the side. Yet, he remains unassuming about his ways and does his job efficiently, especially with the bat in the ongoing series in England. When Shubman Gill was appointed Test captain, those in favour of Jasprit Bumrah expressed their opinion but Jadeja, a veteran of 83 games, was never part of the debate. "Captaincy ka time ab chala gaya," said Jadeja in his inimitable style during the Edgbaston Test when asked about his ambitions in the leadership role. He made 89 and 69 not out in that famous win in Birmingham before racking up two more fifty plus scores in the following Test. His 61 not out at Lord's almost took India over the line as he batted sensibly with Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj to take the game deep from 112 for eight. The 36-year-old has defended as well as anyone in the series and when needed, has used the long handle to good effect. He remains the best fielder and though he was able to extract some turn both at Edgbaston and Lord's, wickets have eluded him in the series. Besides being invaluable in all facets of the game, Jadeja is also mentoring the young blood in the team and of late has developed a strong bond with Kuldeep Yadav, who has been warming up the bench since the start of the series despite the clamour for his inclusion. After the heartbreak of Lord's, captain Gill highlighted Jadeja's immense value as the ultimate team man. "He is one of the most valuable players in India. The experience that he brings in, the skill set that he brings with his bowling, batting and fielding is something that is very rare and hard to find. And the kind of composure that he showed today, it was just tremendous to watch," said Gill. "I think batting with the lower order of the tail has been one of the things that we spoke about in the previous two matches... that our lower order of the tail hasn't been contributing as much. The character and the courage that they showed was tremendous." Jadeja's exemplary commitment to the game doesn't stop at the highest level. When not on national duty, he makes it a point to turn up for Saurashtra. "If Jaddu has his way, he will turn up for all district games also. Despite being one of the finest Test cricketers of India, he remains as humble as ever and lives a quiet life," said a veteran Saurashtra official. When the Indian squad mingled with the Manchester United stars on the sidelines of the fourth Test, Jadeja expectedly took the back seat, staying true to his easy going personality. Having arrived here on Saturday, Jadeja and the rest of the squad members had a closed door training session at Old Trafford. There is rain threat through the week but when the weather clears out, Jadeja will be the first one to put his hand up.
