Further, she told the House that as per the latest annual
Periodic Labour Force Survey
(PLFS) reports, the estimated female Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for persons of age 15 years and above, during 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 was 28.7 per cent, 31.4 per cent, 31.7 per cent, 35.9 per cent and 40.3 per cent, respectively.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the labour ministry had dismissed a media report which raised doubt on accuracy of official jobless data.
The ministry said that PLFS is globally recognized as an empirical and statistically robust source of employment and unemployment data in India.
Live Events
It is based on a large-scale, stratified, multi-stage random sampling framework that covers both rural and urban regions across the country, it said.
Since January 2025, PLFS has transitioned to generating monthly estimates in addition to its existing annual and quarterly outputs, enabling timely and granular tracking of labour market trends, it stated.
The PLFS methodology is aligned with international standards, particularly the definitions and classifications prescribed by the International Labour Organization (ILO), such as Usual Principal Status (UPS) and Current Weekly Status (CWS).
Its data collection and reporting protocols are consistent with global practices used by institutions like the World Bank, UNDP, and ILOstat, enhancing its comparability with international datasets, it has stated.
As per PLFS data, the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 years and above increased from 49.8 per cent in 2017-18 to 60.1 per cent in 2023-24.
During the same period, the Worker Population Ratio rose from 46.8 per cent to 58.2 per cent, while the
Unemployment Rate
(UR) declined sharply from 6 per cent to 3.2 per cent.
These indicators suggest greater absorption of the workforce into productive employment, the ministry has said.
Notably, it stated that the youth unemployment rate fell from 17.8 per cent to 10.2 per cent, which is lower than the global youth unemployment rate of 13.3 per cent as per ILO's World Employment and Social Outlook 2024.
These statistics refute the false narrative regarding widespread youth disengagement, and substantiate stronger labour market participation, the ministry had said.

RBI likely to hold rates steady in August, but more cuts may be on the horizon: Nuvama

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to maintain the benchmark policy rate at 5.5% in its upcoming monetary policy meeting, according to a recent report by Nuvama Institutional Equities. ADVERTISEMENT After a surprise front-loading of a 50 basis points rate cut and a shift to a 'neutral' stance in the last policy, the central bank appears to be signalling limited room for further easing. However, Nuvama believes the case for more rate cuts remains strong. The report underlines that domestic economic activity has visibly slowed in recent quarters. 'Corporates are contending with subdued revenue and profit growth, which in turn is inhibiting capex,' Nuvama households are facing weaker income growth and a deceleration in loan growth, dampening consumption demand. ADVERTISEMENT Adding to the concerns, government expenditure is unlikely to provide a significant boost, while tax revenues have slipped below the 10% year-on-year mark. External demand also appears fragile amid global trade several economic indicators — including credit growth, exports, auto sales, real estate transactions, and corporate profits — have decelerated to single-digit growth, resembling pre-pandemic patterns. ADVERTISEMENT On the inflation front, the report highlights a benign landscape. Headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is near a six-year low, and core CPI (excluding volatile items) has remained below 4% for an extended period. 'Corporate commentary also suggests a lack of pricing power in the economy,' Nuvama the global macro backdrop, marked by narrowing US trade deficits and export redirection by surplus nations like China, is expected to remain deflationary. ADVERTISEMENT Given the current mix of benign inflation and weakening growth, the Nuvama report argues for further monetary easing down the line. Although the RBI is expected to hold rates steady for now, the possibility of returning to an 'accommodative' stance cannot be ruled out if inflation continues to undershoot expectations.'Systemic liquidity is ample and may remain so, and monetary transmission is progressing well,' the report added, suggesting that RBI has room to maneuver if conditions deteriorate. ADVERTISEMENT Nuvama also expects global central banks, particularly the US Federal Reserve, to resume rate cuts later this year. This could create further headroom for the RBI to follow suit, especially as fiscal policy in India remains broadly neutral to eyes will be on the RBI's forward guidance, which could offer clues about a potential shift back to an easing bias. IndusInd Bank share rally 5% on new MD & CEO appointment; time to buy?

Shares of IndusInd Bank soared over 5 per cent on Tuesday after the lender appointed Rajiv Anand as the chief executive officer and managing director for three years, effective from August 25, 2025. The crisis-hit bank's stock rose as much as 5.3 per cent during the day to ₹847 per share, the steepest intraday climb since June 27 this year. The stock pared gains to trade 4.9 per cent higher at ₹843 apiece, compared to a 0.35 per cent advance in Nifty 50 as of 9:45 AM. Shares of the company rose for the second day and currently trade at 8 times the average 30-day trading volume, according to Bloomberg. The counter has fallen 13.3 per cent this year, compared to a 4.3 per cent advance in the benchmark Nifty 50. IndusInd Bank has a total market capitalisation of ₹65,393.95 crore. IndusInd appoints Rajiv Anand as MD & CEO The appointment of Anand has received approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), but is subject to shareholder approval, the company said in an exchange filing on Monday. Anand's appointment as MD&CEO follows the resignation of Sumant Kathpalia, the former MD&CEO of the bank, in April, who took moral responsibility for the accounting lapses at the bank. Prior to this role, Anand was Deputy MD at Axis Bank, where he led the bank's wholesale banking business and was responsible for driving its digital agenda. He joined Axis Asset Management in 2009 as its founding MD & CEO. Anand was one of three candidates recommended by the bank's board to the RBI for the position of MD&CEO. The RBI had given the board until June 30 to submit its list of candidates for the role. Anand brings extensive experience across banking verticals and is well-positioned to lead the bank, Kotak Securities said in a report. The appointment helps ease those fears and signals a step toward restoring confidence, it added While no major announcements are expected immediately following the transition, the initial focus is likely to be on attracting high-quality talent, tightening underwriting standards to mitigate risk, and strengthening compliance and governance, Kotak said. "The current rating (Reduce) reflects the view that it is still early to factor these changes into the investment thesis." IndusInd Bank Q1 results IndusInd Bank reported a 72 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) decline in net profit to ₹604 crore in Q1FY26, as compared to ₹2,170.79 crore. The bank's net interest income (NII) declined 14 per cent Y-o-Y during the April-June period to ₹4,640 crore due to a shrinking loan book. Sequentially, NII was up 52 per cent. Other income was down 12 per cent Y-o-Y to ₹2,157 crore. The private sector lender's NIM declined 79 basis points (bps) Y-o-Y to 3.46 per cent, but increased 121 bps sequentially.

RBI MPC meet: Rate cut unlikely in August; growth, inflation rate in focus

The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is widely expected to keep policy rates unchanged at its upcoming August 6 review, but sentiment has shifted after US President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on Indian exports. RBI MPC: Rate cut still unlikely In June, the MPC cut the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5 per cent and shifted its stance from accommodative to neutral, dampening expectations of another cut in the August review. A Business Standard poll found that six out of ten economists expect no change in August, while four see scope for a 25-bp reduction. A separate Reuters survey conducted between July 18–24 showed most of the economists (44 of 57) expected the RBI to hold rates in the August meeting. Growth outlook stable, but global risks persist With the manufacturing sector reporting strong growth and the July inflation expected to fall to a record low, the MPC may frontload a rate cut. ANZ Research told Reuters that a 25-bp cut was likely even without the tariff announcement. Focus shifts to inflation, growth estimates 'With the recent CPI prints signalling a lower trajectory for the second half of this calendar year, the average for FY26 is likely to be pared,' Aditi Nayar, chief economist, ICRA, earlier told Business Standard. Most economists expect the growth estimate to remain unchanged at 6.5 per cent for FY26 in the August meeting. Mild easing expected later in 2025 Many economists see the RBI holding off on another cut until October or December, when more data will be available on: Q1 GDP performance Monsoon outcomes US Federal Reserve policy signals By October, policymakers will have more clarity to decide on further rate action.
