Meghan Markle reveals 'mentor' Oprah Winfrey played major role in her lifestyle brand
Meghan Markle has revealed how her "mentor and friend" Oprah Winfrey offered her business advice when she was mulling over setting up her lifestyle brand. The Duchess of Sussex made the revelation on the latest episode of her podcast Confessions of A Female Founder, where this week she chats with the co-founder of IT Cosmetics Jamie Kern Lima.
The pair talk about getting their business off the ground, with Meghan describing how chat show host Oprah, who she gave a bombshell interview to in 2021, told her to "encapsulate your essence" when she was first deciding whether to launch her brand As Ever, which so far sells fruit spreads, honey and tea.
Meghan says: "At the beginning, I just liked making jam. All I liked to do was just make jam and preserves. And it went from, 'Okay, I'm gonna share this jam with lots of friends and family,' to 'People really like it and it brings me joy. So maybe I can share it more broadly'.
"But even then, I was in so much fear of failure or opinion, that I wasn't thinking big enough at first…I thought, 'I'll just do small batch jam from home.' 'And I had to step back and look at what I was doing and saying, 'Am I playing small because I want to play small? Or am I setting in motion playing small because I'm scared?'"
And she added: "Oprah, who I know as a mentor and friend to you, same for me, she was the one that said, 'There are tons of things you could put your name on. But for you and how you like to show up for people, once you figure out how to encapsulate your essence, then you'll know'."
Jamie, Meghan's guest this week, founded her firm IT Cosmetics in 2008 after developing products for people with rosacea and hyperpigmentation. She sold the brand in a billion-dollar deal with L'Oreal but tells the podcast how she was rejected for "three years straight" as she tried to get her products in stores.
And Meghan also reveals how she was told not to audition for beauty adverts when she was an actress due to her freckles. Meghan says: "That would have been when I was an actor, auditioning for commercials. And I remember my commercial agent could not submit me for beauty or skincare ads because I had freckles.'
She praised Jamie for using women of all ages and skin tones as her models, adding: "That was such new thinking then. When you were bringing that to market that was so [unheard of]. Now it may seem more normalised." The new podcast comes just a day after Meghan appeared on Jamie's show and told her how she is enjoying a new 'honeymoon' feeling with her husband since the pair got 'a little bit of breathing space' after stepping back from their royal duties.
Meghan said the couple struggled to fully enjoy one another's company early in their relationship as they were quickly put into 'the trenches' by the media spotlight. The pair started dating in 2016 and married in 2018, initially taking on royal duties before deciding to step back from their roles in 2020, leading to strained relations between Harry and the King and the Prince of Wales.
She said: 'You have to imagine at the beginning, everyone has, like, butterflies. Then we immediately went into the trenches together. Yeah, right out of the gate, like six months into dating. So now, seven years later, when you have a little bit of breathing space, you can just enjoy each other in a new way, and that's why I feel like it's more of a honeymoon period for us now.' The duchess praised her husband for keeping the family 'safe'.
Meghan also became emotional when talking about her children, Archie and Lilibet, and revealed that she sends emails to secret addresses she has created for them to read when they are older.
'Before I go to bed, almost every night, I email them, like, here's your report card from today, or, oh my gosh, wasn't it the funniest thing this morning? Or here's a picture of you two having breakfast, or here's you playing. The things that you're not going to frame, the things that you're not going to put pen to paper in a journal, but which they will end up seeing at one point in their life, maybe when they're 16 or when they're 18.
'I'll say, here's an email that I've been keeping for you. Here's everything and every moment that I wanted to tell you how much I love you and, like, how proud I am of you.'

Why Sussexes' new Netflix deal might not be the demotion the critics want it to be
While we're all desperate to know what this new deal is really worth in dollars and pounds, one thing I can tell you for certain is that Prince Harry and Meghan want us to know they're delighted that Netflix again wanted to get a deal done. "Absolutely over the moon" is how it was described to me. But they'll also be aware of the attention it'll attract as we all try to pick apart what it means. Firstly because of that ongoing fascination in how they're making money since stepping away from royal life and losing financial support from the King, but also because of the recent reports that Netflix were intending to cut ties. Yes this is a different type of deal from their original one in 2020. Some have argued that a "first look deal" looks like a demotion from what they previously signed up to. With no real clarity on how much their original deal was worth, and no numbers being publicly thrown around this time, that is hard to judge. But talking to those who know something about these kinds of deals you do get a sense it could potentially be more lucrative than it looks on face value. With first look deals, yes there is often financial commitments from the likes of Netflix to get that first exclusive look at projects and first refusal. 2:22 But there could be other significant monetary incentives for the Sussexes to sign. For example, when the Obamas signed a first look deal with Netflix, the streaming service agreed to pay the operational costs for their production company "Higher Ground". Could it be that Netflix are also now covering the costs of Archewell Productions? It's stating the obvious to say that Harry and Meghan continue to divide opinions, some wanting to watch their programmes from a place of respect and fondness, others as a reason to grumble about them.

Netflix has Harry & Meghan over a barrel – it's talk about royals & divorce or get NOTHING, claims expert
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MEGHAN Markle and Prince Harry have extended their Netflix deal - but bosses are hoping they will have some 'juicy royal tea to spill', according to experts. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have signed a new "multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects" with Netflix, the couple has announced. She claimed: 'It's a retainer in case they [Meghan and Harry] decide to accidentally do something entertaining again. 'That's basically it. So there's no commitment. 'They've put no money behind this. It's basically the right to first refusal. 'So if they come up with something that doesn't have to do with their whole kind of sermonising about how to save the world, then Netflix might be like, yes. 'I mean, to be brutally honest, what they've done is they've said, 'unless you have some juicy tea to spill on the royal family, or you get divorced and want to give us a documentary, probably not.' 'But if they have something juicy to say about the royal family, like the king sent me a potted plant, which turned out to be poison ivy, or that 'H my fox' just didn't hold me the way I wanted to, and so we've had to consciously uncouple, then maybe. 'That's basically it.' Esther claimed that the deal is the 'best of both worlds' and claims Netflix has been "clever in that sense.' She added: 'These people [the Sussexes] are a household name. They're annoying, but they're a household name. Harry & Meghan were 'not in a strong position' & signed Netflix deal for 'much less'… TV giant 'did it for publicity' 'If they do anything interesting, we have to be first in the queue, because it would be a blockbuster. 'Everyone would be covering it. It'd be a huge media storm. But at the moment, given their track record, absolutely not. 'We're not committing five quid to this.' Five years ago, Harry and Meghan secured a lucrative contract, thought to be worth more than 100 million dollars (£74million), with Netflix after quitting as senior working royals in 2020. It is not yet known how much the new extended deal will bring in for the couple, or how long it will last. 5 The couple has signed a new 'multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects' with Netflix Credit: Netflix IDEAL OUTCOME? royal reporter Bronte Coyne said the new deal is the 'ideal outcome for both parties.' She explained: 'We've talked about what was going to be next for Harry and Meghan in their Netflix business arm for a long time now, because we knew that this five-year deal was going to expire this year. 'What was going to be the ideal outcome? 'OK, they're not going to sign a deal anything like the one that was signed in 2020, because they don't really exist anymore. 'The landscape has changed completely for TV, but streaming services in particular. If they [Meghan and Harry] do anything interesting, we [Netflix] have to be first in the queue, because it would be a blockbuster Esther Craichu 'So it did seem likely that there would either be a downgraded deal or an expiration of the deal. 'Now, the fact that both parties can say we've reached a new agreement, it was never going to be what it was before, but it is a new agreement. 'I think that an argument could be made on either side that it's a PR win, because the deal wasn't cancelled, as had been speculated for some time. 'It's a first-look deal.' NEW RELEASES 5 Experts have claimed that Netflix is hoping the couple will reveal more 'juicy royal secrets' Credit: PA Announcing the deal, Meghan said in a statement: 'We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As Ever brand. "My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision.' On top of Season 2 of With Love, Meghan - which will drop later this month - they will also do a "Holiday Celebration" Christmas special this December. "Join Meghan in Montecito for a magical holiday celebration," the announcement reads. "Together, friends and family deck the halls, create holiday feasts, craft heartfelt gifts, and share lots of laughs – with simple how-tos to follow at home. It's a holiday wonder with warmth, tradition, and a generous dose of joy." There will also be a short film called "Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within". SUSSEX NETFLIX HISTORY It was previously thought that the Sussexes' £74million deal with the streamer was not going to be renewed. Harry's Polo series, about the sport, was watched by just 500,000 people. It was also understood that bosses were mildly infuriated by Meghan making her As Ever brand a priority. 5 Prince Harry's Polo series did not hit the top viewing spots Credit: Netflix Lifestyle and cookery show With Love, Meghan only ranked at number 383 in Netflix's six-monthly engagement report this year, with just 5.3million viewers across the globe. It was beaten by reruns of the first four seasons of legal drama Suits, which also starred the Duchess in her pre-royal days. Meghan was filmed for her show making ladybird-shaped canapes from cherry tomatoes and mozzarella balls. The show is a smash hit compared to her husband's docuseries Polo. In the first six months of the year the programme attracted 500,000 views globally, ranking it at number 3,442 out of around 7,000 shows.

Meghan Markle admits hilarious reason why she 'almost didn't marry' Prince Harry in Netflix trailer
Meghan Markle has released the trailer for her upcoming second season of Netflix show With Love, Meghan and it seems there are plenty of royal confessions coming in the new show. Meghan Markle fans are delighted to have finally received a trailer for the second season of the duchess' Netflix show, With Love, Meghan. The 44-year-old's lifestyle and cooking series has shown a new side to the former Suits star as she has proven herself to be very talented in the kitchen. In the upcoming series, it looks as if we're going to get more of an inside look into the royal household as the trailer features Meghan revealing a little-known fact. Towards the end of the trailer, when the Duchess of Sussex is preparing lobster with chef José Andrés, she explains that husband Prince Harry is not a fan of the fancy crustacean, which is typically a pricey meal. She turns to the foodie expert and says "You know who doesn't like lobster? My husband." The chef is left stunned by her admission as he asks: 'And you married him?', leaving Meghan in fits of laughter in response. It's previously been reported that Royal Family members tend to avoid eating seafood, which may have influenced Prince Harry's dislike for lobster. Former royal butler Grant Harrold told the Daily Express in 2022: "When dining, the Royal Family has to be careful with shellfish due to shellfish poisoning due to their work schedules. "Therefore, you will not normally find this on the royal menu." The mum-of-two, who currently resides in Montecito with Harry and kids Archie and Lilibet, is set to welcome more celebrity pals into her kitchen in the second season of her Netflix show. Some of the famous faces who are expected to be getting their hands dirty alongside the duchess include Chrissy Teigen, Queer Eye star Tan France and author and podcaster, Jay Shetty, Cosmopolitan reports. With Love, Meghan is set to return for its second season on the streaming platform on August 26. Meghan announced the news on Instagram to her 4M Instagram followers on Wednesday evening as she dropped the new trailer and wrote: "The best moments are made to be shared. With Love, Meghan returns August 26th on Netflix." The show is just one programme amidst Harry and Meghan's lucrative deal with Netflix, which started in 2020. The Sussexes are also said to be gearing up to produce an on-screen adaptation of the best-selling novel Meet Me at the Lake by Carly Fortune. However, this has been known for quite some time and there is still no release date in sight. Harry and Meghan have also previously broadcasted their tell-all documentary Harry and Meghan, as well as their show Polo. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Bela Bajaria, Netflix's Chief Content Officer, said: 'Harry and Meghan are influential voices whose stories resonate with audiences everywhere. The response to their work speaks for itself — Harry & Meghan gave viewers an intimate look into their lives and quickly became one of our most-watched documentary series.
