SANDAKAN: A high-level meeting between Sandakan Municipal Council President Walter Kinson and prominent businessman Tan Sri Andrew Liew has set the stage for ambitious economic transformation plans here. Andrew, who serves on the Sabah Economic Advisory Council and chairs the Andamy Group, hosted the municipal leader for discussions centred on positioning Sandakan as a regional economic hub.
Advertisement The business leader outlined a comprehensive development vision that capitalises on Sandakan's strategic location as Sabah's eastern gateway. His proposals include deeper economic integration with Indonesia and the Philippines, alongside focus on emerging sectors like green energy, biotechnology and marine industries. 'Sandakan has tremendous potential to lead in high-value sectors that can attract new industries and create sustainable economic growth,' Andrew said during the meeting, which also included MPS member Datuk Tony Liew Ja Hou. The development strategy extends beyond Sandakan's boundaries, with plans designed to stimulate coordinated growth across neighbouring districts including Kinabatangan, Beluran and Telupid.
Advertisement Tourism emerged as another key focus area, with discussions on creating a distinctive brand around eco-tourism, cultural heritage and island resort experiences. The approach aims to leverage Sandakan's historical significance, natural ecosystems and wildlife conservation assets. Infrastructure development features prominently in the blueprint, though Andrew pointed out the importance of preserving Sandakan's unique cultural and environmental values throughout the modernisation process. The meeting also addressed human capital development, with both leaders agreeing on the need for local talent cultivation and retention strategies to ensure economic benefits reach the community directly. Walter described the discussions as constructive and forward-thinking, noting the alignment between municipal priorities and private sector capabilities. Both parties characterised the current period as a critical opportunity window for Sandakan's transformation, emphasising the need for coordinated efforts between government, business and community stakeholders to maintain competitiveness in the regional landscape. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ex-KL Tower operator loses bid to cite minister for contempt

Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Ho Kit Yen, FMT Text Size: The Kuala Lumpur High Court dismissed Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd's bid to bring contempt proceedings and secure an injunction against the government and LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd with costs of RM65,000. (Envato Elements pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here has dismissed an attempt by the former operator of KL Tower to initiate contempt proceedings against communications minister Fahmi Fadzil and seven others, including federal territories land and mines director general Azmi Mohd Zain. Justice Roz Mawar Rozain ruled that the plaintiffs – Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd and Menara KL Sdn Bhd – failed to establish the commission of acts by the defendants that disrupted the administration of justice or court proceedings. Advertisement 'The plaintiffs' lease expired on May 31 and (the government, named as a defendant in the proceedings) is entitled to retake possession,' the judge said when handing down her decision. Ros Mawar added that LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd, LSH Best Builders Sdn Bhd, and Service Master (M) Sdn Bhd, also named as defendants, came in subsequently under a new concession agreement. She ordered Hydroshoppe and Menara KL to pay a total of RM25,000 in costs to the government and LSH Service Master. The court also dismissed an injunction application filed by Hydroshoppe against the government and LSH Service Master, holding that it had been rendered academic. Advertisement The judge ordered Hydroshoppe to pay the government and LSH Service Master an additional sum of RM40,000 as costs over the dismissal of the injunction. The court will hear the bids by the government and LSH Service Master to strike out Hydroshoppe's lawsuit on July 14. Hydroshoppe and Menara KL filed the suit claiming that the LSH group had induced the commission by the government of a breach of contract. They asked the court to declare the award of the KL Tower concession to LSH Service Master void and unlawful. They also sought an estimated RM1 billion in damages, and for the concession to be transferred back to them. Lawyer Vinayak Sri Ram appeared for Hydroshoppe while senior federal counsel appeared for Fahmi and lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar represented LSH Service Master. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ukraine's drone attack halts work at electronic plant in Chuvashia, Russia says

(Reuters) -Production was temporarily suspended at an electronics company in Russia's Volga river region of Chuvashia, some 1,300 km (800 miles) from the border with Ukraine, after two drones fell on the plant's territory, the head of the region said on Monday. The strike - among the deepest into Russia by a Ukrainian drone in more than three years of the war - caused no casualties, Chuvashia Governor Oleg Nikolayev said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app. But "the responsible decision was made to temporarily suspend production to ensure the safety of employees" of the VNIIR enterprise where the drones fell, Nikolayev said. It was not immediately clear whether the drones caused any damage. Nikolayev said that another drone fell onto some fields in the area of the capital of the region, Cheboksary. The Russian defence ministry - which reports only how many drones were destroyed not how many Ukraine launched - said on Telegram that its units downed two drones over Chuvashia. In total, it said, air defence systems destroyed 49 Ukrainian drones overnight over Russia. According to photos and videos on unofficial Russian and Telegram news channels, the drones sparked a fire at the VNIIR plant that they said produces components for electronic warfare. Reuters could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Kyiv has often said that its attacks inside Russia are aimed at destroying infrastructure key to Moscow's war efforts and are in response to the continued Russian strikes on Ukraine. The VNIIR Russian Scientific Research Design and Technological Institute of Relay Engineering with experimental production in Chuvashia is on the U.S. sanctions list, according to the U.S. Treasury website. A Ukrainian drone attack on the Voronezh region that borders Ukraine damaged a gas pipeline, cutting off gas supplies to 22 clients, the region's governor, Alexander Gusev, said on the Telegram. Lembaga Padi dan Beras Sabah: The game changer?

Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Faridah Suffian Text Size: In Sabah, rice is more than a commodity, it is a cultural staple. THE revival of the Lembaga Padi dan Beras Sabah (LPBS) marks a significant shift in Sabah's commitment to food security. Established as the lead agency, LPBS aims to strengthen local rice production and reduce the state's dependence on imported rice. At present, Sabah contributes only 4.7pc to national rice production, and its rice self-sufficiency level (SSL) stands at a mere 22.8pc. The remainder is met through imports, leaving the state vulnerable to external shocks such as climate change, trade disruptions, and geopolitical tensions. Advertisement Malaysia's rice production remains heavily concentrated in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia, particularly Kedah, Perlis, Penang, and Kelantan. In contrast, Sabah offers a largely untapped opportunity for rice diversification, with its vast underutilised land and rich indigenous knowledge systems. The revival of LPBS is therefore not just a state-level concern, it holds potential to contribute meaningfully to national food security goals. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article.
