SANDAKAN: A high-level meeting between Sandakan Municipal Council President Walter Kinson and prominent businessman Tan Sri Andrew Liew has set the stage for ambitious economic transformation plans here. Andrew, who serves on the Sabah Economic Advisory Council and chairs the Andamy Group, hosted the municipal leader for discussions centred on positioning Sandakan as a regional economic hub.
Advertisement The business leader outlined a comprehensive development vision that capitalises on Sandakan's strategic location as Sabah's eastern gateway. His proposals include deeper economic integration with Indonesia and the Philippines, alongside focus on emerging sectors like green energy, biotechnology and marine industries. 'Sandakan has tremendous potential to lead in high-value sectors that can attract new industries and create sustainable economic growth,' Andrew said during the meeting, which also included MPS member Datuk Tony Liew Ja Hou. The development strategy extends beyond Sandakan's boundaries, with plans designed to stimulate coordinated growth across neighbouring districts including Kinabatangan, Beluran and Telupid.
Advertisement Tourism emerged as another key focus area, with discussions on creating a distinctive brand around eco-tourism, cultural heritage and island resort experiences. The approach aims to leverage Sandakan's historical significance, natural ecosystems and wildlife conservation assets. Infrastructure development features prominently in the blueprint, though Andrew pointed out the importance of preserving Sandakan's unique cultural and environmental values throughout the modernisation process. The meeting also addressed human capital development, with both leaders agreeing on the need for local talent cultivation and retention strategies to ensure economic benefits reach the community directly. Walter described the discussions as constructive and forward-thinking, noting the alignment between municipal priorities and private sector capabilities. Both parties characterised the current period as a critical opportunity window for Sandakan's transformation, emphasising the need for coordinated efforts between government, business and community stakeholders to maintain competitiveness in the regional landscape. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? No need for new talks, just political will to implement MA63: Madius

Published on: Wednesday, August 06, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 06, 2025 Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau ( pic ) has urged the Federal Government to implement the 40 per cent revenue entitlement due to Sabah under Article 112C and the Tenth Schedule of the Federal Constitution without further delay. He reiterated the call while debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday. Advertisement Madius questioned why the agreed financial rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) remain unfulfilled despite being constitutionally guaranteed. The Upko Honorary President said Sabahans should not continue to suffer from underdevelopment and poverty due to the failure to deliver the promised revenue returns. He pointed out that more than 80 per cent of the country's RM1.3 trillion debt has been spent in Peninsular Malaysia, while resource-rich Sabah remains inadequately funded. The former Sabah Deputy Chief Minister stressed that Sabah could independently fund basic infrastructure and economic development if it received its rightful 40 per cent share. Advertisement He also questioned the status of proposed 12MP projects and the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on undocumented migrants in Sabah, which he said still lacked clear updates. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? HONG KONG: Cathay Pacific has announced a US$8.1 billion deal to purchase 14 Boeing 777-9 aircraft. The airline confirmed the order in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange. Advertisement Cathay also secured the option to buy seven additional Boeing 777-9 jets. The new aircraft are expected to be delivered by 2034. Cathay currently operates a fleet of over 230 mostly passenger planes. This marks the airline's first major order with Boeing in more than a decade. Advertisement Boeing stated the deal brings its 777-9 order book to 35 aircraft. The 777-9 is described as the world's largest twin-engine airplane. Boeing highlighted the aircraft's fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Hong Kong's aviation sector faced severe challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic. Strict travel restrictions kept the city isolated until late 2022. Cathay reported a slight profit increase to US$1.27 billion in 2024. The airline confirmed flights had returned to pre-pandemic levels earlier this year. First-half 2025 attributable profit rose to HK$3.65 billion (US$4.65 million). Total revenue grew 9.5 percent to US$6.92 billion in the same period. Cathay declared an interim dividend of HK$20 cents per share. Chairman Patrick Healy praised the company's solid financial performance. He cited higher passenger volumes and lower fuel costs as key drivers. Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express have added 19 new destinations in 2025. The airlines now serve over 100 passenger destinations globally. Direct flights to Brussels recently resumed after a pandemic-induced hiatus. However, profit margins dipped by 0.6 percent in the first half of 2025. Healy noted short-term challenges for budget carrier HK Express. Bookings have not yet returned to normal levels, he said. Cathay's share price dropped nine percent following the earnings announcement. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
