Injured Swiss climber rescued after falling during hike on Indonesia's Mount Rinjani
JAKARTA: An injured Swiss climber has been rescued after falling during a hike on Indonesia's Mount Rinjani volcano, just weeks after the death of a Brazilian woman there.
The man, identified as 46-year-old Benedikt Emmenegger, broke his leg after falling on July 16, Indonesian news agency Antara reported on July 17, citing Mount Rinjani National Park Authority head Gede Mustika.
The volcano is located on Lombok island, adjacent to the popular tourist island of Bali.
News outlets said that the Swiss national had begun his hike with a group on July 15.
Mustika told Antara that Emmenegger did not fall into a cliff or ravine, and is believed to have slipped while making his way to Lake Segara Anak.
Australian news outlet News.com.au reported that he had slipped and fallen while descending a steep slope on the morning of July 16.
It added that Emmenegger was with his daughter and a local porter at the time.
He was reportedly given first aid treatment by rescuers before he was evacuated by helicopter later that same day.
Trekking company Visit Mount Rinjani said in an Instagram post that Mr Emmenegger was taken to a hospital in Bali for further treatment.
In the post, which was accompanied by a video of a rescue helicopter, the company urged hikers to be cautious during trekking activities.
'Always prioritise safety, watch every step, and avoid rushing to prevent accidents,' it said.
On June 24, 27-year-old Brazilian Juliana Marins was found dead days after she slipped and fell off a cliff on the side of the volcano during a hike.
She was initially located on June 21, but had slipped farther on the sandy terrain of the cliff face. Rescue operations had reportedly been hampered by bad weather in the area.
A week later, a Malaysian climber sustained serious injuries after falling from a height of about 200m while heading towards Lake Segara Anak.
Malaysian newspaper Sinar Harian reported that the climber's injuries included a fractured hip and head wounds.
Indonesian authorities on June 29 announced plans to review hiking procedures and search-and-rescue protocols on Mount Rinjani.
West Nusa Tenggara Deputy Governor Indah Dhamayanti Putri was quoted as saying that the provincial government would review regulations related to hiking procedures and permit requirements on Mount Rinjani for both domestic and international visitors. - The Straits Times/ANN

Senior Brazilian official says judiciary won't be intimidated by US visa bans
FILE PHOTO: Brazil's Attorney-General of the Union, Jorge Messias attends a press conference, in Brasilia, Brazil July 1, 2025. REUTERS/Adriano Machado/File Photo BRASILIA (Reuters) -Brazil's judiciary will not be intimidated by a U.S. decision to target officials involved in the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro with visa bans, a senior judicial official said late on Friday, criticising the move as arbitrary. In an escalation of tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump and the government of Latin America's largest economy, Washington imposed visa restrictions on Friday on Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, his family and other unnamed court officials. The visa bans were a response to the Supreme Court's decision to issue search warrants and restraining orders targeting Trump ally Bolsonaro, who is accused of plotting a coup to overturn the results of a 2022 election he lost. Solicitor general Jorge Messias, the top judicial official for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's executive branch, said in a statement posted on X that Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet was also targeted by the ban. "Rest assured that no improper maneuver or sordid conspiratorial act will intimidate our country's judiciary in the independent and dignified exercise of its task," he added. Messias said the Brazilian officials were subject to "arbitrary acts of visa revocation by a foreign nation on account of their fulfillment of their legitimate institutional responsibilities in accordance with constitutional terms." In addition to Moraes, seven other justices from Brazil's 11-member Supreme Court were also hit by the U.S. visa restrictions, Government Institutional Relations Minister Gleisi Hoffmann said on Friday. They include justices Luis Roberto Barroso, Dias Toffoli, Cristiano Zanin, Flavio Dino, Carmen Lucia, Edson Fachin, and Gilmar Mendes. The Prosecutor General's Office and the Supreme Court did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Trump has criticised the proceedings against Bolsonaro as a "witch hunt", a term he has used to describe his own treatment by political opponents, and has called for the charges to be dropped. In a letter last week, he announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods starting August 1, opening the message with criticism of the trial. Bolsonaro is on trial before Brazil's Supreme Court on charges of plotting a coup to stop Lula from taking office in January 2023. The right-wing firebrand has denied that he led an attempt to overthrow the government but has acknowledged taking part in meetings aimed at reversing the election's outcome. PM Anwar: Malaysia has yet to receive info on Jho Low's whereabouts
PUTRAJAYA — Malaysia has not received any information regarding claims that fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low (picture), is currently residing in Shanghai, China, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar said he would check on the matter regarding the central figure in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) financial scandal — who is said to be using a fake Australian passport — with Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. 'I have no information, we have yet to receive anything. Let me check. I've read (the media reports). I need to verify with the Home Minister,' he told reporters briefly after attending the groundbreaking ceremony of the MADANI Complex in Teluk Kumbar here today. Anwar was commenting on several media reports claiming that Jho Low, who is being hunted by international authorities, is believed to be living in an upscale area of Shanghai using a forged Australian passport. The revelation was made by investigative journalists Bradley Hope and Tom Wright — renowned for exposing the global 1MDB financial scandal — in a special episode of Finding Jho Low: Live with Bradley Hope & Tom Wright, on Friday. The 1MDB scandal, one of the world's largest financial scandals, saw Jho Low identified as the mastermind, accused of embezzling US$7.65 billion (RM35 billion). — BERNAMA

All four pleaded guilty to charges framed under Section 37(1) of the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998, punishable under Section 29(1)(c) and read together with Section 37(2)(a) of the same Ordinance. In Sessions Court 3, Denis Bobegi Septa was sentenced to six months' imprisonment after admitting to possessing 600 marine turtle eggs, which were found packed in plastic bags inside brown boxes. Authorities also seized RM1,500 in Malaysian currency and 9 million Indonesian Rupiah from him. The case was heard before Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi and prosecuted by Simon Engka Crown. In the same court, Romiati was sentenced to four months' imprisonment for possessing 435 marine turtle eggs. The case was prosecuted by Willy Chin Siaw Min. Meanwhile, In Sessions Court 2, Iin Pretika was handed an eight-month prison sentence and fined RM55,000, in default four months' imprisonment. The case was heard before Judge Zuraidah Binti Zakaria and prosecuted by Leonard Baring. In Sessions Court 1, Sri Astuti received a four-month prison sentence and was fined RM12,910, in default three months' imprisonment. Judge Iris Awen Jon presided over the case, which was prosecuted by Peter Buga. Commenting on the court rulings, Controller of Wild Life Abang Arabi Abang Aimran said the decisions send a strong message to wildlife traffickers. 'These court decisions are a clear warning to traffickers that Sarawak takes wildlife crimes seriously. We will continue to strengthen operations, intelligence gathering, and public collaboration to protect the marine turtle population,' he said in a recent statement. According to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), the convictions stemmed from a joint operation carried out by SFC and Region 5 Marine Police under Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah. The raids were conducted at a lodging and a stall at Serikin Market in Bau, near the Malaysia–Indonesia border. The operation followed intelligence gathered by SFC, targeting a syndicate suspected of involvement in the smuggling and illegal trade of protected wildlife. SFC noted that the smuggling of marine turtle eggs across borders constitutes a serious transnational wildlife crime, threatening the survival of endangered turtle species and undermining ongoing conservation efforts. 'Smugglers often exploit gaps in border surveillance to traffic these eggs, feeding black market demand and exacerbating the decline of already vulnerable turtle populations,' SFC stated. In a separate case, Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) foiled an attempt to smuggle 5,400 turtle eggs on July 6 this year. The eggs were discovered hidden in cardboard boxes and backpacks aboard KMP Bahtera Nusantara 03 at Kapet Sintete Port, Sambas. SFC has urged the public to assist in protecting wildlife by reporting any suspected offences.
