India's sustained economic growth makes it an "anchor of stability" for the world, which needs new engines of growth and development models that can be scaled and shared, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog Suman Bery has said.
Bery addressed the ministerial segment of the High Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development Goals at UN Headquarters on Monday.
He said the world is navigating a period of significant economic shifts and uncertainty, which makes the international community's collective work on Sustainable Development Goals more critical than ever. "The world needs anchors of stability, new engines of growth and development models that can be scaled and shared. India, with its unique strengths and experience, is ready and willing to offer all three. He underscored that India's sustained economic growth makes it an "anchor of stability" for the global community and an example of what is possible.
In an era of flux, India stands out as a vibrant democracy with steadily improving socio-economic indicators enabled by inclusive digital technologies, principled reforms and a focus on empowering all segments of society, Bery said.Further, he said that India is committed to catalysing change across the Global South."India's development journey, marked by scale, speed and stability, offers a credible and replicable pathway for fellow developing countries," Bery said. Addressing the international community from the UNGA podium, Bery said 248 million Indians are estimated to have escaped poverty in the decade between 2013-14 and 2022-23.With India today being home to the world's largest cohort of youth entering employment, the country is committed to making sure that they have a bright and productive future."India's journey demonstrates that inclusive and sustainable development is both possible and scalable," Bery said.India has extended concessional finance, technology partnerships and capacity building support across developing countries, including solar energy infrastructure and digital governance tools. With the UN marking 80 years of existence, Bery said India reaffirms its belief in the UN as the cornerstone of multilateralism."The UN must continue to serve as a catalyst for inclusive and sustainable development. India supports a more representative and effective UN system that reflects contemporary realities and empowers all nations to shape our shared future," he said.UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in remarks to the High-level Political Forum, said the international community is meeting at the forum against the backdrop of global conflicts that are pushing the Sustainable Development Goals further out of reach. He sounded an alarm over the slowing global economy, rising trade tensions, growing inequalities and aid budgets being decimated while military spending soars.
"And mistrust, division and outright conflicts are placing the international problem-solving system under unprecedented strain. We cannot sugarcoat these facts. But we must not surrender to them either. The SDGs are still within reach -- if we act with urgency and ambition," Guterres said.

As Ukraine ceasefire deadline nears, Russia confirms Vladimir Putin's will meet with Donald Trump 'soon'

As Ukraine ceasefire deadline nears, Russia confirms Vladimir Putin's will meet with Donald Trump 'soon' U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin may meet next week, according to Moscow's deputy UN Ambassador, Dmitry Polyanskiy. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Polyanskiy said he had heard that the meeting could happen soon, possibly next week, though the exact date and place have not been shared publicly. He mentioned that both leaders have agreed to keep the details private for now. When asked about a possible meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Polyanskiy said he wasn't aware of any such plans but didn't completely rule it out either. 'I haven't heard anything about a meeting with President Zelensky, but I'm not directly involved in those discussions,' he said. The last time a U.S. President met with Russian President Vladimir Putin was in June 2021. That meeting was held in Geneva between Putin and then-President Joe Biden. Since then, there hasn't been any official summit between leaders of the two countries. Putin confirms upcoming Trump summit, suggests UAE as possible venue Putin has confirmed that a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump is being planned. He said both sides are interested in having the talks and suggested that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) could be a possible location for the summit. Putin made this announcement after meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. During their meeting, the two leaders discussed strengthening ties between their countries. When asked who suggested the meeting first, Putin said it doesn't really matter anymore since both sides want it to happen. As for where the meeting might take place, Putin said the UAE is one of the places being considered and called it a 'suitable location.' Russia invasion of Ukraine Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, claiming it needed to protect its own security. However, Ukraine and its Western supporters believe the attack was simply an attempt by Russia to take over more land. Donald Trump, before returning to office, had promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of becoming president again. But now, nearly seven months into his second term, that promise has not been fulfilled. Recently, Trump increased tariffs on goods from India by 25 percent, reportedly because of India's continued oil trade with Russia. Despite this, Trump praised a meeting between his representative, Steve Witkoff, and Putin earlier this week, saying it was a step forward. According to the White House, Russia has shown interest in holding direct talks with Trump. A meeting could take place as early as next week, as part of renewed efforts to find a solution to the war that has lasted more than three years.

City gets country's first univ-certified course to skill neurodivergent adults

It all started with a question that Sangitaa Advani, a parent of an adult with Down Syndrome, asked herself some years ago: "How can my daughter wake up every day to a full and purposeful life?" What began as one family's journey led to the creation of Skill Shakti Community, a step-by-step, structured programme where neurodivergent adults can build skills, grow peer relationships, and learn to earn, in the self-paced way that they learn best. Now, that model has found institutional recognition. HSNC University, Mumbai (which oversees HR and KC colleges, among others), has recently partnered with Skill Shakti Community to launch InclusivEd, India's first university-certified Certificate and Diploma programme in applied life and career skills for neurodivergent adults. The certification will empower adult learners who have autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, intellectual disability, or other learning differences, to get formal academic recognition for the first time. "HSNC University has taken a truly progressive step," says Advani about the pilot programme which allows self-paced and flexible learning. "It's a credible path to real inclusion, contribution, and dignity," she says, adding a university certification makes neurodivergent learners feel included and get a sense of belonging. It also gives their families a feeling of comfort and direction, especially given how much Indians value education. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Top 25 Most Beautiful Women In The World Articles Vally Undo Finally, employers know that InclusivEd diploma holders have been coached, are capable, and ready to contribute, in roles that play to their strengths. The certification is mapped to the National Education Policy 2020, which recognised the role of internships as part of earning academic credits, and leaves room for skill-based modular learning which is flexible in both pace and format. "When you move from charity to actually enabling people, the whole mindset changes." While the diploma (which entails earning 80 credits) implies that the learner can carry out tasks autonomously, solve simple problems in routine work, and apply judgment, there is also the option of a foundation certificate (20 credits) which means the learner has been coached in essential life skills and basic digital literacy. These options prepare the individual for various career opportunities. "This kind of move will also help people appreciate that the world has a place for everyone," adds Lalvani. In fact, some neurodivergent individuals flourish in methodical, repetitive work, for instance, in professional kitchens and hospitality settings that might not appeal to other 'neurotypical' people. At a time when the world is throttling diversity and inclusion, the pilot certification is moving in the opposite direction. While smaller companies tend to be more receptive, bigger companies have the right intent but don't always know where to begin. "We have found the most success when employers are open and partner with us to truly understand the neurodivergent individual so we can customise employment in a way that its meaningful for the individual and a value-add for the company," says Indira Bodani who founded Gateway School in Mumbai. Skill Shakti Community has been helping its InclusivEd cohort set up micro-businesses using digital tools and visual programmes that help bypass certain learning challenges such as dyslexia, among others. Each of the learners runs a business via Instagram and also interns in industry. For example, Bhoomi Soni makes Jain date-balls, Vir Kapoor makes baked goodies, and Tina Melwani makes chocolates. All three also intern at Taj Group of hotels. Rushil Kirpalani makes surreal paintings, is a model, and currently interns at Deloitte, India. Who can join the InclusivEd pilot? Neurodivergent adults above 16 years of age, who are functionally literate, can use a phone and laptop at a basic level, and are ready to learn in a peer community. A friendly personal interview helps assess if the programme is the right fit for them, says Advani. While felicitating the first 11 neurodivergent learners at the recent inaugural, HSNC Vice Chancellor Dr Hemlata Bagla said, "At HSNC University, we believe excellence wears many faces. InclusivEd is our promise to make education accessible, adaptable, and deeply human." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
