Children trapped inside for four years over COVID anxiety rescued by Spanish police

In Oviedo, a troubling case has come to light involving three young brothers—eight-year-old twins and their ten-year-old sibling—who were reportedly kept inside their home without stepping outside for almost four years. Spanish authorities rescued the boys this week, marking the first time they had been outdoors since December 2021.

The parents, identified as 53-year-old Christian Steffen from Germany and 48-year-old Melissa Ann Steffen from the United States, were arrested. Police allege the couple isolated their children due to an intense fear of COVID-19. If convicted, they could each face up to seven years in prison.
According to DW, when the children were brought out into the garden, they were overwhelmed—hyperventilating, laying on the grass, and marveling at the sensation of touching it. One officer told El Mundo that the boys were frightened, and their reaction to seeing something as simple as a snail was one of astonishment.
El Español reported that the couple had initially requested permission from German authorities to homeschool their children during the pandemic. When warned that social services might intervene, they allegedly relocated to Spain.
For four years, the family lived in a rented home in Toleo, a quiet neighborhood in Asturias. Police described the interior as filthy and chaotic, with piles of garbage, pet waste, used sanitary products, and children still sleeping in cribs while wearing diapers. Images from the home showed unsettling monster drawings on the children's beds.
Live Events
Authorities said the boys were found dirty and severely socially withdrawn, though not undernourished. A medical evaluation revealed that they suffered from serious constipation due to strict toilet schedules; they were only allowed to relieve themselves at designated times and wore diapers at other times.
Police visited the home on April 14, during a widespread power outage across Spain. The father appeared disheveled and barefoot, refused to let officers in at first, and insisted they wear face masks. Once inside, the children were found wearing three masks each. Investigators also discovered large amounts of ADHD medication and cannabis-derived drugs, reportedly obtained illegally. It remains unclear if the children had ever been officially diagnosed with ADHD.

Raj's family in Fatehpur claims he is innocent

Lucknow: Relatives of Raj Kushwaha, 21, the man accused of plotting the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya, demanded justice and insisted their boy has been framed. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They said he called Raja's 24-year-old wife and alleged co-conspirator Sonam "Didi" — holding fast to that one word to claim she is not his lover. The family claimed on Wednesday that Raj, who worked as an accountant in Sonam's family business, had no personal ties beyond their workplace. His interactions with Sonam were strictly professional, according to younger sister Suhani. "He called Sonam didi. He cried when he heard about Raja's death. He went to the funeral and prayed for Sonam's safety," she said. Originally from Rampur village in UP's Fatehpur district, Raj's father moved to Indore 15 years ago and sold fruits for a living. Raj, his mother and two sisters joined him five years later. His elder sister Kajal stays with her grandparents in Rampur. She left for Indore recently, disturbed by the accusations. "My grandson is innocent," grandmother Ram Lalli said, as reporters stood before her modest brick home. "He kept to himself, worked hard, and never had an affair with anyone. Sonam got her husband killed and is now dragging Raj into this." Grandfather Darbari Singh added: "He's the only boy among four siblings. We've never heard his name linked with any girl. A fair investigation is needed." The family said Raj is a soft-spoken, dutiful young man shouldering responsibilities since his father died during the Covid pandemic five years ago. Locals recall Raj visiting his ancestral home just once or twice a year — not even that over the past two years. "Raj is simple and mild-mannered. He doesn't even argue, let alone kill. If a single villager says otherwise, hang him," maternal uncle Ranjeet Singh said.

Thief takes Covid cover to loot cafe in Kolkata

Kolkata: A thief cited Covid protocols to conceal his identity by wearing a cap 'pulled down upto the eyes' and masks, posed as a cleaning staffer and looted Rs 67,000 in cash from a popular café on Woodburn Road in south-central Kolkata. Cops said the cafe employees had not yet explained how the accused gained access to a spot only open to employees. Detective department sleuths recalled how four years ago, during the pandemic, criminals used the Covid protocols to commit petty crimes. The Woodburn Road cafe theft took place around 7:40 pm on Monday. The establishment's partner owner has filed a formal complaint with police. The accused's movements in the cafe premises have been captured by CCTV cameras. France eyes social media ban for under-15s after school stabbing

French authorities have announced plans to ban social media for under-15s and the sale of knives to minors after the murder of a teaching assistant by a 14-year-old boy plunged the country into shock. A secondary school pupil was arrested on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) after killing a 31-year-old school assistant with a knife during a bag search in Nogent in eastern France. Friends and well-wishers left flowers and messages of support in front of the secondary school struck by the tragedy. "We share your pain," read one message. Laurence Raclot, who knew the teaching assistant, Melanie, said she was "stunned". "She was great with kids," Ms. Raclot said. "In a quiet little town, we never would have thought this could happen." A former hairdresser, Melanie had retrained and worked at the school since September. She was the mother of a four-year-old boy and a councillor in a village near Nogent. "There are no words," added another local, Sabrina Renault. "It's really sad for her whole family, for that little boy who's left without his mum." Pupils and parents were seen entering and leaving the school, where a psychological support unit has been set up. The suspect will remain in police custody for a further 24 hours, until Thursday (June 12, 2025) morning, a police source told AFP on Wednesday (June 11, 2025). Little information has been released about his motive. 'Cannot wait' In the wake of the attack, authorities promised a raft of measures to tackle knife crime among children. "I am proposing banning social media for children under 15," President Emmanuel Macron said on X on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) evening. "Platforms have the ability to verify age. Let's do it," he added. Backed by France and Spain, Greece has spearheaded a proposal for how the EU should limit children's use of online platforms as evidence shows that social media can have negative effects on children's mental and physical health. Mr. Macron said on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) that if no progress was made within several months, then France would go ahead with the ban unilaterally. "We cannot wait," he told broadcaster France 2. France has in recent years seen several attacks on teachers and pupils by other schoolchildren. In March, police started random searches for knives and other weapons concealed in bags at and around schools. On Wednesday (June 11, 2025), Prime Minister Francois Bayrou's office said a ban on the sale of knives to minors will be implemented by a decree issued within the next two weeks. Speaking to broadcaster TF1 on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) evening, Mr. Bayrou said that the measure would come into force 'immediately'. 'The list will include 'any knife that can be used as a weapon', he said. He also said parents and educators should be watching for "signs that a teenager is not doing well", while acknowledging that there was a shortage of psychologists. Mr. Bayrou has also called for a trial of metal detectors in schools. Education Minister Elisabeth Borne called for a minute's silence to be held in all French schools at midday on Thursday to honour the memory of the teaching assistant. "The entire educational community is in shock, as is the whole nation," she told France Inter radio on Wednesday (June 11, 2025). Ms. Borne said she was "open to anything" to improve safety, but added that ceramic blades would be invisible to metal detectors. She also said that young people should be protected from "overexposure to screens". But trade unions said they were not sure how these proposals would be implemented and enforced. "Teaching assistants have primarily educational duties within the school environment," said Sophie Venetitay, general secretary of the SNES-FSU teachers' union. But, she added, "little by little, we have seen attempts to turn them into security guards." Remy Reynaud of the CGT Educ'action union criticised the government's decision to introduce bag searches outside schools. "They increase tensions," he said. "School management is pressuring teaching assistants to participate in the searches, which is not part of their duties," she added.
