ANC rallies behind acting police minister Cachalia's appointment

THE ANC has defended the appointment of Professor Firoz Cachalia as acting Minister of Police in the face of mounting threats to challenge the constitutionality of President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision.
The Wits University law professor Cachalia replaces Senzo Mchunu, who faces allegations of corruption and malfeasance from KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. However, the EFF and uMkhonto weSizwe party have taken issue with the appointment, with Julius Malema's party accusing Ramaphosa of violating the Constitution by appointing an acting Minister of Police from outside Cabinet.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said his party wished Cachalia strength and resolve as he assumes this responsibility during a critical period.
Mbalula stated that Cachalia's "deep understanding of the security sector and his proven commitment to clean governance position him to provide the leadership required at this moment".
'The decision to place Minister of Police, Comrade Senzo Mchunu, on a leave of absence is equally commendable. It is a proactive and considered measure, taken in the interest of ensuring that due process is not compromised.
"Importantly, this decision does not imply guilt or prejudgment, it is a step that preserves the integrity of both the Executive and the investigation itself…As the ANC, we welcome the President's consistent approach of allowing institutions to function independently, guided by law and not by political expediency,' said Mbalula.

He said the ANC supported the establishment of the commission of inquiry, considering it a vital tool for achieving justice, truth, and reform.
Acting Deputy Chief Justice, Mbuyiseli Madlanga, will chair the commission tasked with investigating allegations of corruption and malfeasance within the police service. Ramaphosa guaranteed the commission's authority to refer matters for immediate criminal investigation and prompt prosecution decisions.
Mbalula said the commission should be permitted to carry out its duties comprehensively, impartially, and without bias or intimidation.
'It must be understood that in a constitutional democracy, justice is not a spectacle. The separation of powers doctrine places limits on the Executive's direct intervention in investigations or prosecutions. The demand for instant arrests, politically-driven prosecutions, or trials by the media undermine the very foundations of the rule of law.'

The other year, an ANC politician, Bathabile Dlamini, said most of the members of her political party have smallanyana skeletons in the closet. Many of us treated her utterance as a joke. But it is becoming clearer by the day that she was telling the truth. The joke is on us. It is clear that some, if not most, of our political leaders are in the pockets of drug dealers, criminals and business people. He, as the minister of police, would make sure that his handlers are safe and untouchable, whilst committing a crime, thus putting the lives of citizens at risk. This goes for other political leaders and ministers as well. It's public knowledge that citizens have lost trust and confidence in our political leaders and political system. This is because they (political leaders) are not honourable, and are not doing anything to redeem themselves. Worse, they don't care that citizens no longer trust them, as long as they get what they want - money and power, for instance. Lastly, it's time citizens stand up and be counted. They must stop complaining and putting their future in the hands of dishonest politicians. Image: GCIS The weekend's portfolio committee meeting, which Minister Nobuhle Nkabane bunked out of, heard staggering new details about the cover-up of brazen ANC cadre deployment. The evil system of ANC cadre deployment is a web of corruption. There was never an 'independent panel' which made the SETA board appointments - as with all ANC cadre deployment corruption, it was done behind closed doors by the ANC and its handlers, one being Luvo Makasi. The son of the ANC Chairperson, Gwede Mantashe, a former ANC KZN Premier, former ANC KZN MECs, and ANC office bearers currently serving in internal structures, were not appointed to these lucrative Board jobs by luck or accident. Their appointments were engineered. It is now on record that four out of five named persons have so far denied being on Nkabane's 'independent panel' - only one named person remains to testify. The committee testimony by witnesses, including Advocate Terry Motau, confirmed the conclusion from at least four out of the five people who Nkabane declared to Parliament served on this panel, that the panel did not exist. Next Stay Close ✕ The bombshell revelation in the past 24 hours is that the names and applications for persons competing to serve on the SETA Boards were given directly to the Minister personally, in January 2025 (on her request) and not to the panel. This is contrary to Nkabane's claim to Parliament on 30 May that she didn't see the names until after "the panel" advised her. Nkabane only created the 'independent panel' in March 2025, which we deduce from the 'appointment letters' for 'panel members' that she submitted to Parliament. Nkabane had these applications for a full two months before she sent appointment letters to "the panel". Two letters have been supplied to Parliament which show her appointing two different people as 'independent panel' Chairpersons. One, Mabuza Ngubane as Chairperson on the 7th of March, and another, Adv Terry Motau as Chairperson on the 15th of March. Since then, both Motau & Ngubane have denied this, and Nkabane has admitted to Terry Motau that she indeed did not appoint him. These revelations are staggering: Nkabane & the ANC had the CVs and applications for two months before she started her 'independent panel' scheme, She attempted to appoint two different persons as 'Chairperson' - both of whom have testified to not having played any role in "the panel" and Now, at least four out of five persons on the 'independent panel' deny ever serving on the panel. With each passing day, Nkabane's ANC cadre deployment corruption scheme grows more and more brazen. The DA's demand to Luthuli House by way of a PAIA application for information on the Party's role in Nkabane's cadre deployment is yet to be answered. The DA will be holding Luthuli House to the legal timelines of this. The silence and inaction from President Ramaphosa show that an ANC party-wide cover-up may be underway, and the DA will not rest until full accountability follows. Duduzile Zuma on July riots threat: 'Round 2 will be worse'
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla – the daughter of MK Party President Jacob Zuma – has threatened a 'round two' of July riots, after the party demanded the protection of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The political party is demanding the dismissal of Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu – who was placed on a leave of absence – amid claims he orchestrated a criminal syndicate. The party also wants President Cyril Ramaphosa to tender his resignation. In an Instagram post, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla pledged her allegiance to Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi once again. The daughter of the former president threatened to rally the MK Party into action if anything happened to the KZN provincial police commissioner. Posting a flier for the party's protest march, which occurred on Friday, 18 July, she shared: 'Once they touch him, kuzonyiwa. Round two will be worse. Let's protect this man'. Earlier this month, she defiantly posted: 'Let them touch you. We're ready for round two!'. Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla has pledged allegience to KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. During the civil unrest, the 42-year-old former housewife retweeted several videos of the violence and looting, which was a direct reaction to her father's incarceration on contempt-of-court charges shortly before. Duduzile is charged with contravening the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Act (POCDATARA) and incitement to commit violence. She will appear in the Durban High Court again on 14 August. During the protest march in Pretoria on Friday, Duduzile-Sambudla Zuma and other MK Party members demanded that action be taken to protect Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Their list of demands included: Arrest of Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu Police file dockets of political killings should be returned to the Special Task Force Arrest of those implicated by Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, including deputy national commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya President Cyril Ramaphosa's resignation MK Party national organiser Joe Ndlela handed over a memorandum at the Union Buildings and told the crowd that they were giving the government '14 days to respond.'
