Captain cool: Jatinder guides Oman to dramatic Super Over win over USA

Times of Oman22-05-2025
MUSCAT: Captain Jatinder Singh produced a masterclass under pressure, scoring a sublime century and later finishing the job in the Super Over as Oman edged hosts USA in a dramatic ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 encounter at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, USA, on Wednesday.
It was Oman's second successive win in the ongoing League 2 tri-series, which also features Canada.
Jatinder's knock of 100 from 101 balls laid the foundation for Oman's total of 266. But it was his nerveless striking in the one-over shootout — where he smashed 13 off just 4 balls — that sealed a thrilling win for Duleep Mendis' side, helping Oman leapfrog Scotland into third place on the eight-team table.
Opting to field first after winning the toss, USA might have hoped to restrict Oman to a modest total. But the visitors found a pillar of resistance in Jatinder, who batted with patience and purpose despite early wickets tumbling around him. Oman were precariously placed at 55 for 4 in the 12th over when Jatinder and the experienced Mohammad Nadeem (40 off 89) came together.
Their 103-run fifth-wicket stand revived the innings. Jatinder reached his 50 from 62 balls and accelerated smartly to bring up a brilliant century off exactly 100 deliveries, striking 9 fours and 2 sixes. The captain was eventually dismissed for 100 in the 41st over, caught by Saiteja Mukkamalla off Saurabh Netravalkar.
Late fireworks from Vinayak Shukla (44 off 42, 3x4, 2x6) and a whirlwind 42 off just 23 balls by Hassnain Shah, which included four maximums, powered Oman past the 260 mark. Despite five wickets from Milind Kumar (5/66), Oman's total of 266 from 49.4 overs looked competitive.
USA fight back to tie
USA's chase began with early jitters as leg-spinner Samay Shrivastava and pacer Hassnain Shah removed openers Andries Gous and skipper Monank Patel inside the first 26 overs. Smit Patel (44) and Saiteja Mukkamalla (46) tried to rebuild, but regular strikes by Oman kept the game tight.
The turning point came when Milind Kumar joined the party. His counterattacking 68 from 65 balls, supported by a cameo from Harmeet Singh (25 off 14), brought USA right back into the match.
The hosts needed 18 to win off the final over with two wickets in hand. Jasdeep Singh and Nosthush Kenjige were at the crease with Shrivastava to defend 17. Kenjige stole a leg bye off the first ball to bring the attacking Jasdeep on strike. A couple was followed by a no-ball (full toss) from Shrivastava that was pulled to the boundary to leak five runs. However, off the free hit, Kenjige was run out to swing the pendulum in Oman's favour.
USA needed 10 to win off the last three balls. Jasdeep took a couple and then smashed a six to bring the equation down to two to win off the last ball. Shrivastava held his nerve to concede only a single, tying the scores and forcing a Super Over.
Super Over drama: Jatinder delivers again
USA batted first in the Super Over and managed 13 without loss, thanks to a big six from Andries Gous off Hassnain Shah. But that was not enough against a man in form and full confidence.
Jatinder, fittingly, returned to finish what he started. Facing Harmeet Singh, he clubbed a six and a four in the first three balls before Hassnain sealed the win with a single, as Oman chased down 14 in just five deliveries to spark celebrations.
League standings impact
The result saw Oman improve to 22 points from 18 matches, overtaking Scotland and staying firmly in the qualification hunt. USA remain on 24 points (18 matches), holding second place but will rue a missed opportunity to close the gap on leaders Netherlands, who have 26 from 20 games.
Speaking after the match, Oman head coach Duleep Mendis praised his side's composure. 'It was a great game of cricket. The boys showed tremendous heart, especially Jatinder, who was outstanding in both innings.'
Jatinder was named Player of the Match — a deserved accolade for a performance that blended grit, flair, and leadership.
Oman now turn their focus to Canada, their next opponents in Lauderhill on Friday. With momentum on their side, and their skipper in good touch, they will be looking to continue their climb up the League 2 table.
Brief scores: Oman 266 all out in 49.4 overs (Jatinder Singh 100, Hassnain Shah 42, Vinayak Shukla 44; Milind Kumar 5/66, Saurabh Netravalkar 3/49) tied with USA 266/9 in 50 overs (Milind Kumar 68, Saiteja Mukkamalla 46, Smit Patel 44; Samay Shrivastava 3/68, Aamir Kaleem 2/31, Shakeel Ahmed 2/38)
Super Over: USA: 13/0 (Andries Gous 11*, Harmeet Singh 2*) lost to Oman: 14/0 (Jatinder 13*, Hassnain 1*) — Oman won in 0.5 overs.

Muscat – Registration is now open for the 14th edition of Mussanah Race Week, presented by ASYAD. Held from 15-21 October 2025 at Barceló Mussanah Resort, the event will bring together over 100 sailors from around the world for a week of coaching, camaraderie and competition in Optimist, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, ILCA 7, Hansa 303 and the inclusive RS Venture Connect class. The Mussanah Sailing School, operated by Oman Sail, has been designated a Category A High Performance Centre by the Asian Sailing Federation (ASAF), and is also the base for Oman's National Sailing Teams, giving the young sailors the chance to experience international standard facilities as they take the next step on their journey in sailing. Conditions in Mussanah are also expected to be ideal for sailing once again this year to give some of the region's top sailing talent the perfect platform to showcase their skills. During the event, Oman Sail coaches will also hold daily community 'Try Sailing' sessions to introduce people from the local community to the sport and experience the feeling of being on the water with a qualified instructor. The initiative aims to inspire the next generation of Omani sailors and show how accessible sailing can be at Oman Sail's Mussanah Sailing School based at Barceló Mussanah Resort. Abdulaziz Al Shidi, Acting Sailing Director at Oman Sail, said, 'The standard of sailing [within the region] is improving year on year so we are excited to welcome a high calibre of athletes, along with their coaches and families, to Mussanah in October for a week of racing, learning and mutual understanding. The event promises to be a celebration of the sport as well as a chance for young sailors to interact, grow as athletes and individuals, and gain experience of the high level regatta environment – all in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship.' Shaima Al Asmi, Oman Sail's Operations Executive and Mussanah Race Week Project Manager, added, 'Mussanah Race Week has always been known as a festival of sailing that goes beyond racing to promote friendship, inclusion and mutual understanding. This year marks the 14th edition of the event, which is an undeniable success story for sailing in Oman and Oman Sail, and we are looking forward to welcoming the next generation of sailing stars to our shores for another wonderful week on the water.' Competition at Mussanah Race Week will begin after three practice days, where 12 races in each class - no more than three per day – will decide the winners. Prizes will be awarded for the overall top three in each class, as well as the Junior top three for sailors under the age of 12, and the girls top three, as well as the overall Team Racing competition. Oman Sail and the Barceló Mussanah Resort will also host a BBQ night for all sailors, staff and families to offer a unique opportunity to experience authentic Omani hospitality and get to know each other in the idyllic surroundings of the resort. The 2024 edition of Mussanah Race Week achieved Gold Clean Regatta Certification from Clean Regattas, the world's leading sustainability certification, in recognition of Oman Sail's commitment to preserving the environment during the event. Initiatives including a beach clean-up, waste reduction measures on-site, a recycling programme and the elimination of single use plastics underlined the potential for sailing to be a clean sport. Similar initiatives will be in place this year, including a beach clean-up during the event days. Mussanah Race Week 2025 is supported by presenting partner ASYAD and venue partner Barceló Mussanah Resort. More information about the event can be found on the Oman Sail website.

'All guns blazing": Tim David highlights Australia's T20I approach after win over SA in 1st match

Darwin : Following the 17-run win over South Africa in the first T20I, Australian batter Tim David said that the team goes out "all guns blazing" while batting, and there are not many instructions from the coaching staff as they trust the players irrespective of the situation. David's crunchy sixes and Josh Hazlewood's (3/27) timely strikes with the ball were the major highlights for Aussies as they put the brakes on a valiant South Africa while defending 179 runs, despite a brilliant 71 (in 55 balls, with seven fours and a six) by Ryan Rickelton and his 82-run stand for the fourth wicket with Tristan Stubbs (37 in 27 balls, with five fours). Speaking after the game, David, who had launched eight towering sixes along with four boundaries in his 52-ball 83, explained the team's game plan in T20Is. Despite being 30/3 after being put to bat first, it was David and Green who counter-attacked with a 16-ball 40 run stand for the fourth wicket, with Green contributing a quickfire 35 in 13 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes. During the presser, David said, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, "It is obviously not the team's plan to be four down within six overs, but that happens at times. We have got what we believe is a great calibre of batters in our batting order, and we back each guy to make the right decisions." "We have been playing together as a group now for a while, so there's not a great deal of instruction from the coaches. They trust the players. We trust ourselves to go out there and we understand the game situation and we make decisions on the fly, because that's the nature of T20 cricket." "I think if you have watched our guys bat over the last period, wherever they bat around the world and when they play for the Australian team, it's close to all guns blazing. So, yeah, you can probably expect to see that a little bit from our team. That is how we think we play best," he concluded. Since last year's T20 World Cup, Australia has a powerplay (1-6 overs) strike rate of 195.92, the highest in the world. The average runs put on the board during this period is 66.52, also the highest in the world. While they have lost 29 wickets and the average wickets lost per powerplay is 2.07, with Aussies topping these two unwanted aspects too, the decision to go "all guns blazing" has paid off handsomely nonetheless. Only England (168.84), India (155.65), and New Zealand (154.75) strike at above 150 in powerplay during the same period, while NZ and the Three Lions are losing lesser amount of wickets, with England losing 22 and NZ losing 18. India has lost a massive 38 wickets in this phase, but the Men in Blue look just as unstoppable, having lost just three out of 28 matches and won 24 since the T20 WC 2024.

Chase's all-round effort helps WI level series with 5-wicket win over Pakistan in 2nd ODI

Tarouba: An all-round performance from Roston Chase helped West Indies secure a five-wicket win over Pakistan in the second ODI at Tarouba on Monday. With this win, Windies have levelled the three-match series at 1-1. The match was curtailed due to rain. WI opted to field first for a 37-over-per-side match. Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals and at one point were reduced to 88/4 in 21.1 overs. It was contributions from Hussain Talat (31 in 32 balls, with four boundaries) and Hasan Nawaz (36* in 30 balls, with three sixes) which took Pakistan to 171/7 in 37 overs. Jayden Seales (3/23 in seven overs) was WI's top wicket-taker in the match, while Jediah Blades, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie and Chase got a wicket each. After it started raining again, the revised playing conditions and target for the hosts were 184 runs in 35 overs. However, WI were reduced to 48/3, with Hasan Ali (2/35) and Abrar Ahmed (1/23) doing the initial damage to the Windies. It was a 54-run stand for the fourth wicket between skipper Shai Hope (32 in 35 balls, with two fours and a six) and Sherfane Rutherford (45 in 33 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) that brought the run-chase back on track for WI. Mohammed Nawaz (2/17) struck in quick succession to remove the duo, bringing the hosts to a tricky 107/5 in 21.2 overs. Roston Chase (49* in 47 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) and Justin Greaves (26* in 31 balls, with a six) formed a useful 77-run partnership to take the hosts to a five-wicket win with 10 balls in hand. Chase was given the 'Player of the Match' for his all-round effort.
