The 2026 Land Rover Defender 90 will only be offered with the 518-hp V-8 engine.
This raises the two-door Defender's base price from $58,750 last year to $116,250 for 2026.
Similarly, Lexus's beautiful coupe is now only sold as the V-8-powered LC500 for 2026, with the slow-selling LC500h V-6 hybrid no longer available.
Despite an influx of electric and hybrid offerings, the V-8 engine isn't dead just yet. In fact, for two vehicles, the V-8 powertrain is the only one to survive for the 2026 model year. The two-door Land Rover Defender 90 drops both its four-cylinder and six-cylinder setups, entering 2026 exclusively with a supercharged V-8. Similarly, Lexus is ditching the hybrid V-6 found in the LC500h, leaving the LC500's 5.0-liter V-8 as the sole engine choice in Lexus's elegant GT car for 2026.
Two Doors and Plenty of Power
The Defender 90 had previously been offered with three powertrains, starting with the 296-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the base S trim. The X-Dynamic SE trim brought a 395-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that was augmented by an electric supercharger and a 48-volt hybrid system. The Defender 90 V8 served as the two-door range-topper, but it now represents the only way to get the stubbier 90 model for 2026, a Land Rover spokesperson confirmed to Car and Driver.

This move significantly raises the base price for the Defender 90. Previously, pricing began at $58,750 for the S trim, with the X-Dynamic SE ringing in at $70,350. Now, getting into a Defender 90 will require quite a bit more coin, with the V8 model starting at $116,250 for the 2026 model year. That's $57,500 more than last year's base price, meaning the entry cost for a two-door Defender is now almost double the amount needed to buy a 2025 Defender 90 S.
Along with reworking the Defender 90's lineup, Land Rover also gave its boxy off-roader some upgrades for 2026. The most notable visual change is in the headlights, where the two LED tabs in the top outside corner are now filled in instead of an outline. Inside, all Defenders now feature a 13.1-inch touchscreen.
Goodbye, Hybrid
Meanwhile, over at Lexus, the brand's beautiful coupe and convertible carry over for 2026 with minimal changes, except that you can now only buy the LC with the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8. The LC500h, which had a 354-hp hybrid setup that paired a 3.5-liter V-6 with two electric motors, is no more, a Lexus spokesperson confirmed.

Most shoppers won't notice, however, as the LC500h has been a blip on the radar. In 2024, Lexus sold just 18 LC hybrids, compared to 1446 LC500s with a V-8 engine. That skewed ratio wasn't a one-off, with only 37 hybrids finding homes in 2023, versus 1724 V-8 models. The LC500h totaled 19 sales in 2022, 14 in 2021, 14 in 2020, and 37 in 2019.
Other than discontinuing the LC500h, it's business as usual for the LC500. There's a new iteration of the Inspiration Series for the 2026 coupe, limited to 200 units and sporting a new color (Smoke Matte Gray) paired with a black-and-white interior. The 2026 LC500 convertible gets its own Inspiration Series, capped at 350 units and featuring a new color called Wind with Saddle Tan and white seats. The 2026 LC500 coupe starts at $101,700, while the convertible will require $109,200.

Japan currently leads our automotive imports at 32 per cent, whereas China only has 17 per cent. But by 2035, the Asian superpower is set to dominate the market with 43 per cent of all imports, and push other automotive powerhouses like Japan, South Korea, and Thailand down massively, according to the Centre for International Economics. founder Paul Maric told Yahoo Finance this trend is set to change how our roads will look. "You're going to have some vehicles that have become so expensive that it's going to force consumers who may have been wedded to these brands to go, 'Well, I can save $15,000 by getting a Chinese vehicle that'll do the same thing as my Japanese car,'" he said. At the moment, a car buyer in Australia can select from 23 different brands made in China, with BYD becoming the most recently attended the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition and said there were up to 100 brands that exist in China that haven't yet made their way to Australia. "The motor show had eight of these enormous halls, and each hall had a litany of Chinese brands, most of which we've never heard of here, and they were jam-packed with people," he said. "You then went over to where the European cars were, and it was like a ghost town." At least a dozen manufacturers have announced plans or are rumoured to be bringing their vehicles to Aussie roads by the end of the year. Warning for Aussie drivers buying cars made in China The cars coming from China into Australia will still have to pass all local tests and standards, and they will be sold across the price spectrum of very cheap to very expensive. While Aussies will soon be spoilt for choice, Maric warned you shouldn't just look at price. "There's going to be a lot of cars to pick from but be careful which car you're buying, because with so many brands coming to Australia, you might buy something that's great value today, but that brand may not exist in five or 10 years time," he said. "All of a sudden, you've got a car that you can't sell, a car that you can't get parts for, and a manufacturer that has just closed up shop and disappeared. "So while there is a lot of value to be had, I would just tread carefully with what you're actually buying." He said some of these Chinese brands have only been around for a few years and might not have the staying power to remain in Australia. Others might be overwhelmed by the competition here and be forced to pull out due to lack of sales. This issue was echoed by Australian Automotive Dealer Association chief executive James Voortman. 'If we see brand departures from Australia, like we saw with Holden some time ago, that can only be bad,' he said. 'You won't have a place to service your car. You won't have a brand to honour your recall obligations. "Given that the motor vehicle is generally either the largest or second-largest purchase that a consumer makes, that is a bit concerning.' Why will Chinese-made cars become so popular in Australia? Maric explained to Yahoo Finance that in years gone by, Chinese-made cars weren't viewed very favourably in Australia. They had to compete against big names like Toyota, Ford, Mazda, and Kia, and the car expert said they also weren't made very well by comparison. But the tide has turned massively in the last few years. "We used to have this issue where people would slate Chinese cars and talk about how bad they were," Maric said. "Legally, they were unsafe and they weren't very good in terms of the way that they drove. "Today, though, it's a completely different story. They are far better value than anything from Europe. "They have way more features, and they're now just as good to drive as a lot of the cars that we're seeing from Europe and Japan." China can also produce vehicles much faster than Europe or the US. Data from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers found US and European manufacturers typically operate on a 200 to 216-week product development cycle. However, some Chinese manufacturers can complete their cycles in just 120 weeks. Maric said brands like Subaru, Mitsubishi, and Toyota will likely be "feeling the pinch" of this upcoming competition. He added that some Chinese brands view Australia as the perfect starting point to export their vehicles. If they do well here, then they could perform in other markets. The practice gained national attention after the head of Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor criticized the sale of zero-mileage used cars within China in May. On June 10, the People's Daily newspaper condemned the domestic sale of these vehicles, calling for "tough regulatory action" to restore market order amid an ongoing price war. While domestic sales of such vehicles face criticism, the export of zero-mileage used cars is actively encouraged by regional governments across China. Reuters claims it identified 20 local governments, including major export hubs like Guangdong and Sichuan, that have publicly documented their support for this practice. Since export firms both purchase and sell each car, the transaction value is doubled compared to standard new or used car sales, artificially inflating GDP statistics. Welcome to one of the weirdest and most annoying electrical gremlins a car can throw at you. A viral video from automotive-inclined creator Andywhyisthat (@andywhyisthat) shows the mystifying footage of a Honda idling normally at just over 1,000 rpm. However, when the left blinker is engaged, the tachometer needle starts bobbing in rhythm with the blinker, between 0 and 2,000 rpm, with no change in engine speed. What's Causing the RPM Yo-Yo Effect? The most common explanation? A faulty or corroded ground. Many vehicles rely on shared grounding points for multiple systems. If a ground connection is loose or rusty , electrical signals can 'bleed' between circuits. That's how a blinking turn signal might send a pulse to your gauge cluster, causing your tach needle to bounce like it's trying to keep time with the blinker. There are plenty of forum discussions about this problem. 'When the turn signal is blinking, the tach needle jumps like 50-100 rpm in time and rhythm of blinker,' one user wrote on .
