Waive off dues accruing out of CAPF deployment: CM to Shah
Hemant Soren
on Friday urged Union home minister
Amit Shah
waive off Centre's dues, amounting to Rs 13,299.69 crore, which has accumulated in lieu of deployment of Central Reserve Police Force (
CRPF
) in Jharkhand for anti-extremist operations over the years.
Notably, the centre has asked the state to pay the amount which has accrued since CRPF was deployed by centre for the operations in Jharkhand.
A statement issued by the state information and public relations department late on Friday night said, "The CM in his letter urged the dues to be waived off as its payment would cause a financial burden on limited resources of the state and would affect implementation of development schemes."
At present, 14 battalions of central paramilitary forces including nine of CRPF, two of CoBRA and three of Seema Suraksha Bal are deployed in anti-extremist operations in Jharkhand.
The development comes after Shah chaired a meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council in Ranchi earlier this month and declared the Jharkhand, along with several other of its neighbouring states, had become largely free of Naxalism. Soren said the state govt is tackling disasters and implementing social welfare schemes successfully after the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Jharkhand has been one of the states to be affected the most by left wing extremism and eradicating it from its roots is a shared responsibility of the Centre and state," he was quoted as mentioning in his letter.
Soren further said that the state police, along with CRPF deployed by Centre, is carrying out anti-extremist operations. Their activities have significantly reduced, and 400 police personnel were killed in the operations. "In such a backdrop, necessary steps should be taken under the principle of cooperative federalism to waive off the retention charges for deployment of central armed police force to carry out anti-extremist operations," the CM wrote.

TMC leader Abhishek slams Centre over Pahalgam attack; criticises 'foreign policy'
TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee slammed the Centre for "intelligence failure" in the Pahalgam terror attack and voiced concern over "steep decline" in India's foreign policy. According to sources close to the TMC national general secretary, Mr. Banerjee raised the matter during the INDIA bloc's online meeting, which was convened to firm up the joint Opposition strategy for the Monsoon session of Parliament beginning Monday. "During the INDIA bloc meeting, Banerjee raised the Pahalgam issue. He said it was clearly intelligence failure. Even the governor has admitted the same. Then why was the IB chief given an extension? What was the compulsion?" a source close to the Diamond Harbour MP told PTI after the meeting on Saturday (July 19, 20250. He also alleged that Pegasus spyware, instead of being used to combat terrorism, was being used to intimidate opposition leaders. "Pegasus is being used by the government to harass the opposition instead of using it to stop terrorism and nab terrorists," the source added. Mr. Banerjee voiced concern over what he termed a "steep decline" in India's foreign policy over the past decade, pointing out the absence of explicit condemnation from ASEAN nations against Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack. "In the meeting, Banerjee said the last 10-12 years of India's foreign policy have witnessed a big decline. It is in bad shape. Why did no ASEAN country name Pakistan while condemning the dastardly Pahalgam attack?" the TMC leader is learnt to have said during the virtual meet. He also criticised the Modi government's communication strategy after the terror strike, saying Indians were forced to rely on U.S. President Donald Trump's social media accounts for updates. "Such is the sad state of affairs that people of India had to look to Donald Trump's social media handles and accounts to get updates because they were kept in the dark by this government at the Centre," the source quoted Mr. Banerjee as saying. He questioned the government's decision to send parliamentary delegations abroad to brief stakeholders while allegedly withholding information from citizens at home. "After Pahalgam, MPs delegations were sent to various countries. What good did it do? How many countries came out in our support? Instead of briefing its own people, the Modi government sent MPs to brief stakeholders abroad. The government kept the people of India in the dark," Mr. Banerjee said, according to the source. During the meeting, he also raised the issue of Special Intensive Revision, which he said the BJP and EC were using as a form of "backdoor NRC". "Four months after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP added 40 lakh voters in Maharashtra to win the assembly polls. They are trying a similar thing in Bihar. In Bengal, they are trying to remove genuine voters," a source close to Mr. Banerjee said. Twenty-four parties, including the Congress, TMC, DMK, RJD, SP, NCP (Sharad Pawar), Shiv Sena (UBT), JMM, CPI-M, CPI, CPI-ML, Forward Bloc, IUML and Kerala Congress, participated in the deliberations.

'Need to cooperate with other parties ...': Shashi Tharoor's 'nation first' message amid Congress rift buzz; quotes Nehru
NEW DELHI: "Who lives if India dies?" Congress MP Shashi Tharoor invoked Jawaharlal Nehru ' s famous words while responding to a high school student's question about party loyalty at an event in Kochi on Saturday. The Thiruvananthapuram MP, who has been facing criticism within the Congress, affirmed that national interests must transcend party lines. "Politics is, unfortunately or otherwise, in any democracy, about competition. And as a result, when people like me say that we respect our parties—we have certain values and convictions that keep us in our parties—but we need to cooperate with other parties in the interests of national security," the Thiruvananthapuram MP added. Tharoor emphasized that, for him, the nation comes first and parties are merely a means of improving the country. "The question you asked—sometimes parties feel that this is disloyalty to them, and that becomes a big problem. Which is your first loyalty? To my mind, the nation comes first. Parties are a means of making the nation better. So to my mind, whichever party you belong to, the objective of that party is to create a better India in its own way. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Now, parties have every right to disagree about the best way of doing that—the best way of making a better India. " "In our Parliament today, there are 46 political parties. There must be some issues on which they all unite. That's certainly my passionate conviction. A lot of people have been very critical of me because of the stand I've taken—supporting our armed forces and our government over what happened recently in our country and on our borders. But I will stand my ground because I believe this is the right thing for the country. And when I speak of India, I speak for all Indians, not just those who may like my party," he said. Sharing his interaction with the student, Tharoor noted that while he's been avoiding political discussions, he felt compelled to address a student's question. "In Kochi today, I was asked inevitable question by a high school student. While I have been steering clear of such political discussions in public, I felt a student deserved a response," he said in his post on X. The friction between Tharoor and the Congress leadership intensified following his role in Operation Sindoor and his leadership of an all-party delegation to the United States to present India's position on Pakistan and terrorism. His article praising Modi's "energy" and "dynamism" in diplomatic affairs, which was later shared by the Prime Minister's Office, further strained relations with his party. Tharoor's relationship with the Congress leadership has been under strain since he contested the party president election against Mallikarjun Kharge. The friction reportedly intensified when his name did not appear on the list of Congress leaders suggested for the Union government's Operation Sindoor outreach. Despite this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi later invited Tharoor to lead a delegation to the United States and other countries in the Americas. Tharoor's public statements, including those interpreted as favourable towards the Prime Minister, have also caused discomfort within the Congress's Kerala unit. The rift came into sharper focus following his recent remarks and social media posts that appeared to challenge the party's leadership. Tensions further escalated after Tharoor praised PM Modi's diplomacy during Operation Sindoor in an article describing his 'energy' and 'dynamism' as assets for India's global standing. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) shared the piece, triggering questions about Tharoor's loyalty. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge indirectly rebuked him, suggesting that his praise for PM Modi was inappropriate. "We say nation first, but some consider Modi first, country later. What can we do about that?" Kharge said. Tharoor, however, clarified that his remarks reflected national interest—not support for the BJP.
