The Ordinary's retinal is the 'most affordable and effective', according to a beauty editor
Indeed, from its retinol to its retinal offerings, you won't find The Ordinary leaning into superfluous bells and whistles. That means no fragrance, no elaborate packaging, and instead, a roster of solid, no-frills formulas that we can always count on when our disposable income is looking, well, not so disposable.
One such product that is firmly on our radar, is The Ordinary's retinal 0.2% emulsion (£15.20, Lookfantastic.com). Pocket-sized and potent, this little serum has the power to firm and fill lack-lustre skin thanks to its vitamin A-derived formula.
The difference between retinol and retinal lies in the fact the latter is further along the vitamin A cycle, so it works faster on fine lines, boosting cell turnover and all its other anti-ageing benefits. Keep reading for everything you need to know about The Ordinary's formula, plus our tried and tested review.
With similar products from competitors – think Medik8, Kate Somerville and K-beauty brand Naturium – costing around £50, The Ordinary offers a more affordable, and, in some cases, more effective formula.
The Ordinary's retinal 0.2% features skin-protecting oats to combat the potential irritation that can go hand-in-hand with vitamin A formulas, especially given this retinal's quick-working nature. Take it from beauty editor Lucy Partington who reviewed the product for our review of the best retinol creams and found it 'the most affordable and effective retinal formula'.
She enjoyed both the addition of calming oats for any dryness or inflammation and said that it is 'suitable for all skin types'. Plus, boosting the product's value for money even more, she added that 'only a pea-sized amount is needed a couple of times a week', meaning this tube should 'last you a few months'.
If you've been considering adding vitamin A to your nightly skincare, this retinal is the way to go. We'd recommend introducing it into your routine gradually, increasing and decreasing use at your skin's pace to minimise any reactions.

This Moisturiser Is A Tonic For Sensitive Skin Prone To Acne, Flaking And Excess Oil
My job means I'm constantly throwing active ingredients at my face. Retinols here, acids there. A hefty dose of niacinamide for good measure. While I know my skin well (and what it can and can't tolerate) I've learnt to recognise when it's time to strip things back again. When my skin needs something cosseting, calming and soothing, I make a point of listening. To set the scene, I have combination skin prone to blemishes and acne. Thanks to a dermatologist appointment just over a year ago, I now know that this is caused by hormonal fluctuations. I can remember the utter despair I felt when I made that first appointment. My skin was dull and flaking. Oily across my t-zone with a smattering of spots around my chin. I was embarrassed, and I was sore. She advised I drop everything from my routine aside from a cleanser, moisturiser and SPF. It felt simple, but it transformed by complexion quickly. While one year later I have gradually reintroduced stronger actives, the moisturiser I reach for when my skin's in need of some serious TLC remains the same - the one recommended to me that very day. Enter Medik8's Total Moisture Daily Facial Cream, £48. It's no frills. But it's as efficacious as they as they come. In my naivety, I didn't know acne prone skin had the potential to glow, but this proved me wrong. Here's why I still swear by it when my skin's feeling out of sorts. Formulated to deliver up to 100 hours of hydration, this moisturiser is a must-have for anyone looking to repair a compromised skin barrier. If you feel you've overdone it with active ingredients (signs to look out for are redness, flaking or blemishes) or your skin is just in need of a pep up, this one could be an excellent solution. It combines hyaluronic acid with clinically proven ingredients that support both the skin barrier and microbiome. Use it morning and night to soothe, calm and deeply nourish the skin. 1. Medik8 Total Moisture Daily Facial Cream Rachael Martin, beauty director says: 'You'd be forgiven for thinking this one isn't all that exciting, but truthfully, it's as good as it gets. No frills, yes. But if you're after a solid moisturiser that helps restore your skin barrier and leaves you with healthier, more radiant skin in the long run? This one's a winner. Oh, and it's refillable.' Pros Suited to all skin types Luxurious formula, but will sink in quickly The customer reviews are incredibly impressive Cons Heavy pot - can make travelling a little tricky. I've been using this both morning and evening to replenish my complexion. A walnut-sized amount, smoothed over the face, neck and décolletage, is enough to temper any tightness and help reduce flaking. Rachael Martin, Beauty Director, says: 'For over a year now this has been an old reliable - I'll come back to it time and time again. It's skincare with no frills- but all the function. Firstly, a moment for the myriad of calming ingredients I swear by when I've overdone it. The star is the prebiotic peptide, which helps balance the skin's microbiome while strengthening the barrier. A strengthened barrier means skin that looks and feels healthier in the long run, and I always see the difference when I've taken some time out to bolster mine, especially where blemishes are concerned. Then there's hyaluronic acid- it's well known for attracting and retaining more than 1,000 times its weight in water. It leaves my skin feeling soft, supple and soothed. And let's not forget the skin-saving heroes, ceramides and lipids. Naturally found in the skin barrier, ceramides, squalane and vitamin F mimic the skin's own lipids to nourish, replenish and visibly restore. It's a clever, comforting formula that feels gorgeous on my skin. Slightly thicker and more cosseting than my usual moisturiser, it takes a few seconds to sink in- but don't be put off. It's non-comedogenic meaning it won't clog pores. Once it does sink in, that's when the magic happens. My skin is left looking brighter, and calmer. If applying before bed my skin appears more even in tone come morning - there's a real glow there and its more even tone and texture too. In the morning it also works a treat. A small amount leaves my skin perfectly prepped for make-up- almost like a primer. It reminds me of Embryolisse, a cream I used to love-except that one, sadly, made my sensitive skin break out. With this, my skin looks fresh, bouncy and plump. And, crucially, after just three days of swapping this one back into my routine my acne always appears reduced.' You'd be forgiven for thinking this one isn't all that exciting, but truthfully, it's as good as it gets. No frills, yes. But if you're after a solid moisturiser that helps restore your skin barrier and leaves you with healthier, more radiant skin in the long run? This one's a winner. Oh, and it's refillable. Medik8's ‘most powerful Vitamin C' is Georgia Toffolo's go-to for slowing signs of ageing
Georgia Toffolo is a known fan of Medik8's skincare products, and her latest find is touted as one of the most powerful vitamin C serums around for reducing signs of ageing One celebrity who's always been very open about her skincare journey is Georgia Toffolo, with the former Made in Chelsea star sharing her struggles with acne over the years. However one brand that she's always sworn by for helping keep her skin looking youthful, smooth and radiant is Medik8. In one of her latest Instagram videos, she took followers along to track down one of the brand's latest launches; the C-Tetra Advanced Serum. In the Instagram video, Toff wrote: 'Looking for one of the most powerful vitamin C's on the market?' before leading her followers over to her new skincare staple. In the video, Toff added that the new serum is a 'gel based serum that brightens and firms skin', and 'An upgrade of my trusted vitamin C, the C-Tetra Luxe serum – the texture is divine.' The latest addition to Medik8's impressive skincare roster will set you back £69 for a 30ml bottle, with the new C-Tetra Advanced Serum combining 20% vitamin C and cutting edge phyto exosomes together. Together, they help to shield and improve your skin's natural recovery from environmental stressors which cause premature ageing, helping slow down signs like fine lines and wrinkles. Said to make visible changes in as little as seven days, the serum helps to brighten and smooth your skin tone, whilst slowing down the effects of free radicals on your skin, leaving it looking more youthful for longer. Whilst Toff touted it as one of the most powerful on the market, we did spot this 25% Vitamin C + Glutathione Clinical Serum which has an even higher 25% concentration of vitamin C, and is currently on sale for £48.80 down from £61. You can also pick up the Pai Skincare Stabilised Vitamin C 20% Serum for £13.30, down from £19 at Face the Future. For those after something a little less intense, Dr Althea's Gentle Vitamin C Serum (£19.99) contains 20% hippophae rhamnoides fruit water, which is perfect for delicate skin, whilst The INKEY List's 15% Vitamin C + EGF Serum (£15) features a lower dosage of vitamin C. However the 20% stabilised vitamin C in Medik8's C-Tetra Advanced Serum has been designed to be both highly potent and gentle on skin, with several reviewers saying it didn't aggravate their skin or leave it feeling sensitive. It also contains multi-weight hyaluronic acid and N-Acetyl glucosamine (NAG) which hydrates your skin and restores the skin barrier. Toff finished off her video showing how to use the serum, with two to three pumps being plenty for your face, neck and décolletage, as she added it felt 'super lightweight' and 'glides onto your skin'. She finished off by calling the C-Tetra Advanced Serum her 'new staple product' – and we can totally see why.

8 best root touch-ups to see you through to your next hair appointment
Anyone who dyes their hair will be familiar with the inevitable appearance of roots. Whether you're trying to stretch out your salon visits or touch up pesky greys, the best root cover-up products can save your dye job – and lots of money. The options range from pigmented powders, sprays, temporary dyes, and mascara-style wands, depending on the type of coverage you're after. Sprays, for example, can be great for a day or two but will wash out when you shampoo your hair. Box dyes provide more permanent coverage, but they may not be for you if you're not confident when it comes to dying your hair and just want something to tide you over between salon visits. 'Layering is the secret to achieving 100 per cent coverage,' says Adam Russell, creative master colourist at Josh Wood Colour. 'For sprays, hold the can a few inches away from the scalp and keep it moving, as if applying hairspray or dry shampoo,' he explains. 'This technique works beautifully and creates a natural, seamless finish.' Some products are best applied as you're drying your hair with a hair dryer, while others are for use on dry hair, explains Russell. It's worth checking the instructions on the product so you can make sure you find an option that will work for you and your routine. But with so much on the market, it can be hard to find products that work for you, so I put the best options to the test. After months and months of testing, I've found the best root cover-up products to pop in your bathroom cabinet or handbag. How we tested After more than a decade of dying her hair to cover greys, I'm well-versed in a decent root cover-up product. From semi-permanent dyes to sprays and powders, I've tried them all in between salon visits. The products featured here were put to the test throughout a wide range of day-to-day scenarios, including workouts. I also used them in different weather conditions to see how they fare come rain or shine. I considered the following key criteria: Application: Ease of use, lack of transfer, coverage and blendability were all important considerations. Results: I noted whether the products provide a natural-looking finish that holds well. Value for money: We also assessed whether the formulas offered good value for money. The best root cover-ups for 2025 are:
