40 free agents Hearts, Hibs and SPFL clubs could sign as PFA squad assembled
Stars like Claudio Braga and Stuart Findlay are already off the mark at Tynecastle with Derek McInnes' side navigating their Premier Sports Cup campaign. Hibs meanwhile have busy their transfer record to sign Thibault Klidje ahead of Europa League qualification action vs FC Midtjylland.
Bargains will also be sought and some could be found in the PFA pre season squad, with 40 unattached players involved in the ensemble this week. They have faced off against Port Vale in a friendly, as players are offered regular training as they seek a new club, and look to impress.
Dwight Gayle completed a full pre-season with the PFA last summer and landed at Hibs off the back of it, where he made himself a cult hero with a winner at Hearts and providing key experience en route to a third place Premiership finish. So could Hibs go back into that realm for more recruits, or could the likes of Hearts plus others in Scotland take a look at what's on offer? Including a range of players from former Premiership men to a Scotland international, here are the 40 players currently.

Barcelona pushing to complete signing of Manchester United's Marcus Rashford

Stenhousemuir 0, Motherwell 1: O'Donnell strike keeps Well cup hopes alive
Jan Berthel Askou's side bagged a narrow win over League One opponents Motherwell kept alive their hopes of progressing from Premier Sports Cup Group D with a slender win over Stenhousemuir at Ochilview. The Premiership side had a number of chances to stretch their lead, particularly in the second half after a first 45 played in torrential rain. In the end, Stephen O'Donnell's strike just before the interval was enough to separate the sides and put Motherwell on eight points, going into a last-game showdown at home to Morton on Tuesday. Stenhousemuir boss Gary Naysmith made four changes to the side that lost to Morton on Tuesday, having made seven signings on Friday. Josh Walker, Finn Robson, Peter Mendy and Ross Taylor came in for Oli Simpson, Scott McGill, Matty Aitken and Corey O'Donnell. Motherwell gaffer Jan Berthel Askou made six changes to the side that struggled past Peterhead on Tuesday. Stephen O'Donnell, Kofi Balmer, Ewan Wilson, Andy Halliday, Tawanda Maswanhise and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos came in for John Koutroumbis, Paul McGinn, Liam Gordon, Emmanuel Longelo, Elliot Watt and Eseosa Sule. Stenhousemuir had the first shot on goal in four minutes, but Ross Taylor's scuffed shot was comfortably held by Matty Connelly. Motherwell went close in seven minutes when Callum Slattery's cross from the right was well met by the head of Tawanda Maswanhise, but brilliantly clawed over the bar by Darren Jamieson. A whipped Ewan Wilson cross from the left caused havoc in the Stenny box in 13 minutes, but there were no takers. Andy Halliday tried a shot from distance in 31 minutes, but it was well over. Callum Slattery saw a 19-yard free kick punched over the bar by Jamieson in 39 minutes, but referee Lloyd Wilson awarded a goal kick, much to the bemusement of the crowd. But Motherwell took the lead two minutes later when Slattery's corner from the right was met at the back post by a side-foot finish from O'Donnell. Motherwell went close to doubling that lead in 54 minutes when Elijah Just's cross from the left took a wicked deflection off defender Greg Buchanan, but keeper Jamieson reacted well to block. The visitors should have doubled their lead in 64 minutes when Slattery's cross from the right was met with a back-post volley by sub Eseosa Sule, but Jamieson brilliant blocked. Halliday's corner from the right was met with a powerful header by Kofi Balmer that was cleared off the line by Michael Anderson in 71 minutes. Anderson should have levelled in 90 minutes when a shot came to him through a ruck of legs, but he fired past with just Connelly to beat.
