Syrian pro-Assad fighter jailed for life in Germany for crimes against humanity

Arab News03-06-2025
BERLIN: A German court on Tuesday convicted a Syrian man of crimes against humanity and jailed him for life over offenses committed during his time fighting for former President Bashar Assad.
The court in the city of Stuttgart found the former militiaman guilty of crimes including murder and torture after a trial which involved testimony from 30 witnesses.
Shortly after the outbreak of anti-Assad protests in early 2011, the man joined a pro-government Shia militia in the southern town of Bosra Al-Sham.
He proceeded to take part in several crimes against the local Sunni population with the aim of 'terrorizing' them and driving them from the town, the court found.
German authorities have pursued several suspects for crimes committed in Syria's civil war under the principle of universal jurisdiction, even after Assad's ouster last December.
In 2022, former Syrian colonel Anwar Raslan was found guilty of overseeing the murders of 27 people and the torture of 4,000 others at the notorious Al-Khatib jail in 2011 and 2012.
That was the first international trial over state-sponsored torture in Syrian prisons and was hailed as 'historic' by human rights activists.

Iraq Considers Oil Exports via Lebanon's Tripoli Port, to Study Reviving Iraq-Syria Pipeline

Iraq's oil ministry is considering exporting oil through Lebanon's Tripoli port and will study reviving the dormant Iraq-Syria oil export pipeline, it said on Tuesday. The ministry plans to form a joint committee to assess the pipeline's condition. The announcement came during a visit by Syria's energy minister to Baghdad to discuss cooperation in oil, gas and energy. Iraq dispatched a high-level delegation to Damascus in April to assess the feasibility of reviving the Iraq–Syria oil pipeline, a move Baghdad is counting on to diversify export routes amid expanding production capacity.

Syrian, Iraqi energy ministers discuss Kirkuk–Baniyas oil pipeline

LONDON: The Syrian Arab Republic's Energy Minister Mohammed Al-Bashir on Tuesday discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector with Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani. Al-Bashir stressed Syria's need for oil imports, and proposed linking pipelines between the two countries, noting that the Kirkuk-Baniyas line was no longer functional. Iraq's deputy prime minister spoke of his country's interest in reactivating the 850 km pipeline and suggested evaluating whether to repair it or build a new one due to regional events affecting oil exports, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported. Pumping stations along the Kirkuk–Baniyas route are largely destroyed and need full restoration, the SANA added. Discussions in Baghdad also included plans for laying optical cables alongside the oil pipelines and connecting them to Lebanon. Both parties agreed to establish joint technical teams and a primary coordination committee. Syrian Deputy Energy Minister Ghiyath Diab also attended the meeting.
