Jane Birkin's original Hermès bag sells at auction for whopping 8.6 million euros

Chicago Tribune11-07-2025
PARIS (AP) — Sketched out on an air sickness bag, the first Birkin handbag — the prototype for fashion's must-have accessory — sold for a staggering 8.6 million euros ($10.1 million), including fees, on Thursday in Paris to become the second most valuable fashion item ever sold at auction.
The winning bid of 7 million euros drew gasps and applause from the audience. The price crushed the previous auction record for a handbag — $513,040 paid in 2021 for a Hermès White Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Diamond Retourne Kelly 28.
Now, the original Birkin bag, named after the actor, singer and fashion icon that Hermès created it for — the late Jane Birkin — is in a new league of its own. Only one fashion item has sold at auction for more: a pair of ruby red slippers from 'The Wizard of Oz', which sold for $32.5 million in 2024, Sotheby's said.
The Paris auction room buzzed with anticipation as the sale got underway, with the auctioneer reminding the crowd that the bag was 'totally unique' and 'the most famous bag of all time.'
The bidding started at 1 million euros but quickly increased, with telephone bidders fighting it out at the end. With Sotheby's fees included, the total price for the winning bidder from Japan was a cool 8.6 million euros, the auction house said.
From the starting price, bids rocketed past 2 million euros, then 3 million, 4 million and 5 million, to astonished gasps. When the price jumped from 5.5 million to 6 million euros in one swoop, there were whistles and applause.
The final bids were 6.2 million euros, then 6.5 million, then 6.8 million before the Japanese buyer's last winning bid: 7 million euros.
Sotheby's didn't identify the buyer. Nine collectors bidding by telephone, online, and in the room competed in the 10-minute auction battle, with the private collector from Japan beating a last remaining other bidder at the end.
Paris fashion house Hermès exclusively commissioned the bag for the London-born Birkin in 1984 — branding it with her initials J.B. on the front flap, below the lock — and delivered the finished one-of-a-kind bag to her the following year, Sotheby's said. The subsequent commercialized version of Birkin's bag went on to become one of the world's most exclusive luxury items, extravagantly priced and with a yearslong waiting list.
The bag was born of a fortuitous encounter on a London-bound flight in the 1980s with the then-head of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas. Birkin recounted in subsequent interviews that the pair got talking after she spilled some of her things on the cabin floor.
Birkin asked Dumas why Hermès didn't make a bigger handbag and sketched out on an airplane vomit bag the sort of hold-all that she would like. He then had an example made for her and, flattered, she agreed when Hermès asked whether it could commercialize the bag in her name.
'There is no doubt that the Original Birkin bag is a true one-of-a-kind — a singular piece of fashion history that has grown into a pop culture phenomenon that signals luxury in the most refined way possible. It is incredible to think that a bag initially designed by Hermès as a practical accessory for Jane Birkin has become the most desirable bag in history,' said Morgane Halimi, Sotheby's head of handbags and fashion.
The bag became so famous that Birkin once mused before her death in 2023 at age 76 that her obituaries would likely 'say, 'Like the bag' or something.'
'Well, it could be worse,' she added.
Sotheby's said that seven design elements on the handcrafted all-black leather prototype set it apart from Birkins that followed.
It's the only Birkin with a nonremovable shoulder strap — fitting for the busy life and practicality of the singer, actor, social activist and mother who was also known for her romantic relationship with French singer Serge Gainsbourg and their duets that included the steamy 1969 song 'Je t'aime moi non plus' ('I Love You, Me Neither').
Her bag also had a nail clipper attached, because Birkin 'was never one for long painted nails,' Sotheby's said.
The bag that Hermès handmade for her, developed off its existing Haut A Courroies model, also has gilded brass hardware, bottom studs and other features that differ from commercial Birkins.
Birkin's casual, breezy style in the 1960s and early 1970s — long hair with bangs, jeans paired with white tops, knit minidresses and basket bags — still epitomizes the height of French chic for many women around the world.
When Birkin chatted to Hermès' Dumas on the Paris-to-London flight about what her ideal handbag would be, she'd been in the habit of carrying her things around in a wicker basket, because she felt handbags in the 1980s were too small, Sotheby's said. She was traveling with her young daughter, Charlotte, and complained that she couldn't find a bag suitable for her needs as a mother, Hermès says.
Hermès later gifted her four other Birkin bags. She kept the prototype for nearly a decade, before auctioning it for an AIDS charity in 1994. It was auctioned again in 2000 and had since been in private hands.
The previous owner, who identified herself only as Catherine B., told journalists at the auction that the bag 'has all the attributes of a star.'
'The price is the price of the Hermès story,' she said.
Sotheby's called it 'more than just a bag.'
'The Birkin has evolved from a practical accessory to become a timeless cultural icon,' it said. 'Its presence spans the worlds of music, film, television and the arts,' it added. 'It is a red-carpet staple, a fashion magazine mainstay, and a coveted piece in the wardrobes of celebrities, artists and stylists.'

Eminem Documentary ‘Stans' Books Limited August Run in AMC Theatres

A new documentary about rapper legend Eminem is headed for a limited run on the big screen. AMC Theatres has come aboard to distribute Stans in the U.S., and has committed to playing the doc in more than 135 of its domestic locations beginning Aug. 7 and ending Aug. 10. Overseas, Trafalgar Releasing will release the doc at the same time in more than 1,600 theaters across 50 markets. More from The Hollywood Reporter Box Office: 'Superman' Saves the Day for DC Studios With $125M Domestic Opening, $220M Globally Box Office: James Gunn's 'Superman' Flying to $55M Friday for $115M-$120M U.S. Opening AMC Theatres Gets Stock Upgrade on Outlook of "More Consistent" Blockbuster Releases The pact follows in the wake of AMC directly distributing Taylor Swift's concert pic The Eras Tour and Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé. The Eminem-produced doc (trailer, below) opened the inaugural London edition of the SXSW festival earlier this year, and is inspired by the artist's 2000 iconic song 'Stan,' about an obsessive, unstable fan who takes his admiration for the rapper too far. In London, director Steven Leckart described how he flipped the music documentary format on its head. Stans film follows not just the musician's artistic trajectory but that of his most loyal superfans, with the doc 'offering an entertaining and vibrant look at the modern nature of fandom and how social media has irrevocably changed the relationship between artists and their audience.' (The term 'Stan' was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017). Leckart said after the premiere during a Q&A: 'I was raised on hip-hop in the '80s and '90s, and I grew up on MTV. So I witnessed [Eminem's] rise's first hand and I was a fan, but I think I just kept coming back to the song 'Stan' and really thinking about how unconventional it was and still is.' He continued: 'I just saw an opportunity to make an unconventional doc … We've seen a glut of docs that are just so straightforward and standard. And so this is a beautiful opportunity to do something different.' Other producers include Paul Rosenberg, Stuart Parr, Antoine Fuqua, Tony DiSanto, David Schiff with DIGA Studios in association with Shady Films, Fuqua Films, Interscope Films, and MTV Entertainment Studios. Bruce Gillmer, Amanda Culkowski and Michael Maniaci are Executive Producers for MTV Entertainment Studios. Stans will be available on Paramount+ internationally later this year. Stans: The Official Soundtrack, which will feature previously unreleased tracks, is already available for pre-order. Here's why Matty Healy wasn't at Charli XCX's wedding

Congratulations are in order: this weekend, Brat superstar Charli XCX tied the knot with her boyfriend, George Daniel, at a ceremony in Hackney Town Hall. In style, of course. Charli wore a Vivienne Westwood dress and her signature wraparound black shades, seemingly confirming the news via a TikTok video where she joked that George shed a tear when he saw her walking down the aisle. It was a relatively low-key affair involving what looked to be close friends and family – but still, onlookers were surprised to see that one person in particular didn't seem to be there. That would be Matty Healy, the lead singer of The 1975: the band that Daniel is the drummer for. The pair's friendship stretches back decades: they've been part of the same band for almost twenty years, spending much of that time either writing or touring together. As it turns out, Healy was in LA, attending a screening for the film I Know What You Did Last Summer – which his fiancee, Gabbriette Bechtel (a model and actor, whom Healy has been dating since September 2023) appears in. It looks like there was a scheduling clash with the wedding – though this is all speculation, and hasn't yet been confirmed by any of the parties involved. However, he wasn't totally absent from the festivities: according to The Sun, Healy was at Daniel's stag do earlier this week. That took place in Ibiza, and Healy reportedly flew out on Tuesday 'George has been busy this summer, but his mates were determined to take him on a stag do,' a source reportedly told the Sun. 'He flew to Ibiza for a couple of days for a raucous knees-up with his closest pals – including his bandmates – and party girl Charli was all for it.' Apparently, after their more low-key nuptials, the pair are planning to tie the knot again in spectacular fashion in Sicily later this year. 'Neither of us are particularly formal about marriage or care about the formalities of the ceremony or whatever,' Charli told Harper's Bazaar after the pair announced their engagement in November 2023. 'We just want to be together forever and have a party with our friends.'

Victoria Beckham says David's hair 'looks terrible' after DIY buzzcut goes wrong and leaves bald patch

If you're anything like us, you srsly back Victoria Beckham. The one-time Spice Girl and current reigning fashion mogul is known for being, well, faultlessly chic. And while she's best known as a style icon, she's also got some serious stakes in the beauty world. Alongside her luxury fashion brand, she runs her own beauty line called (what else?) Victoria Beckham Beauty. And when you look back at her hair transformations over the years, you begin to understand that she is responsible for some of the most major hair trends from recent memory: from chunky highlights and a blonde pixie in the aughts, to a sleek 'pob' in the 2020s. So, basically, we trust her opinion on all things hair, style and beauty. Which is why we're particularly intrigued about a recent IG post of hers, where she weighs in on a hair mishap suffered by her hubbie David Beckham. In a video captioned "Dad what have you done?!?!😂😂 @davidbeckham", Victoria provided followers with some unique insight into the Beckham household. The video opens with David clutching his head, looking particularly sheepish, and blocking his DIY haircutting handiwork from view. "What have you done?" asks Victoria off-camera, as she stumbles upon the scene. "The head of the clippers fell off my head," David replies, still covering his head with one hand. Not taking no for an answer, Victoria is keen to get to the bottom of what's happened saying: "You were trying to give yourself a haircut, what have you done? Let me see..." David then raises his hand, putting his uneven buzz cut, and subsequent bald patch, on full display. Able to judge the hairstyle now it's properly in view, Victoria shares her prognosis. "It does not look good," she weighs in. "I'm going to always be honest with you - it looks terrible." Even in times of hair catastrophe, Victoria and David have soooo much chemistry that it gives us hope that we'll find true, lasting love (once we get over our last situationship, that is).
