Barcelona to shut cruise ports to bring down tourism

Barcelona will close two of its seven cruise terminals as it steps up efforts to control visitor numbers following a local backlash against tourism.
Under the €185m (£160m) plan agreed between the Spanish city and port authorities, two terminals are to be demolished and a third rebuilt for public use. That will slash the number of passengers the port can handle at any one time by 6,000 to 31,000 by the end of the decade.
Following the reduction in capacity, priority will be given to ships departing from Barcelona, usually staffed by locals, rather than those just visiting in order to maximise benefits for the economy.
Jaume Collboni, Barcelona's Left-wing mayor, said the deal was struck after the port showed 'understanding and empathy' in accepting that the expansion of cruise activity could not carry on unchecked and had to be reduced.
He said: 'For the first time in its history, a limit is being placed on the growth of cruise ships in the city. The current management of tourism involves establishing limits.'
It comes after protesters took to Barcelona's streets last month as part of the biggest anti-tourism rally in its history. It was the culmination of months of anger at overcrowding and high prices in the city.
Protesters last year sprayed visitors with water pistols to highlight what they saw as the swarming of the city.
Cruise vessels are reviled in some tourist hotspots for flooding streets with visitors who spend little before returning to their ship.
While moves to ban them have become commonplace, Barcelona is going a step further by shrinking its port infrastructure to keep them away.
The number of ships visiting Europe's busiest cruise port has surged over the past six years and jumped by a fifth between January and May, bringing in 1.2m people.
Under the latest plans, a 2,000ft length of quayside will be renovated, while the bridge to the cruise terminals will be doubled to provide space for cyclists and pedestrians.
Hookups to the power grid will also be provided so that ships do not have to use their diesel engines in port.
José Alberto Carbonell, president of the Port of Barcelona, said the agreement would permit the 'sustainable development of cruise activity'.
He said that while smaller, the resulting facilities will be amongst the most modern in the world and better able to act as a base for cruise ships, boosting local employment.
Barcelona, which has a population of 1.7m, or 5m across its metropolitan area, attracted 3.7m cruise-ship passengers last year. Miami, the busiest cruise port in the world, handled a record 8.2m.

This is how much Liverpool are really spending on Hugo Ekitike. It's a summer of extravagance under Richard Hughes. After an underwhelming transfer period last summer, the club's sporting director is now delivering a genius window. We've already seen him sign some exciting players and now Hughes has addressed a very important void in the squad with the signature of Ekitike. As per Fabrizio Romano, Ekitike has been given the 'here we go' with everything by the two clubs for his transfer. This agreement according to the journalist could be worth €95m in total. Some have suggested Frankfurt wanted as much as €100m. However, it's important to note that this total sum includes add-ons, some will be achievable, some will be performance based so the reality of how much Liverpool have actually spent on Ekitike is actually far different to what it appears on the surface. And a recent report in the reliable L'Equipe has confirmed that. So, the initial upfront fee Liverpool are going to pay for Ekitike this summer is nowhere near €100m nor even €90m. In fact Liverpool could be getting him for an absolute bargain. According to L'Equipe, Liverpool's upfront fee for Ekitike, which does not include bonuses and add-ons is only €78m, which is roughly £67m. That's a figure that's not really being reported but it's coming from the most reliable sources from Ekitike's homeland. So, the chances are it's likely to be true. And £67m makes the Frenchman an absolute bargain in the current market. Sure, there will be add-ons that could be worth around £15m as per the fee Fabrizio Romano which would rise as high as €95m, but all of that is based on factors that will determine Ekitike's success. Liverpool will only have to pay the rest of the money if he plays a certain number of minutes, wins trophies, scores goals and etc. We don't quite know how the package looks like but it's guaranteed to include at least some of those criteria. So in reality, the Reds have negotiated a decent fee for Ekitike. £67m for a player of his exciting potential is well worth the money. The extra £15m is something they will have to pay over the course of a few years, and only if Liverpool and Ekitike are successful. For a club with the Reds' finances that extra £15m will not be a problem. Neither is the £67m fee, which is far cheaper than what Liverpool would have had to pay for Alexander Isak, who was being quoted around the £150m mark. Now, is £67m a lot of money? In the grand scheme of things, yes. But in the current footballing landscape, where a Bryan Mbeumo, with one year left on his contract goes for more than that, Ekitike's price tag is pretty fair.

A five-year deal has been agreed with a company to provide IT equipment for the States of Guernsey. Apogee has signed a contract which will start on 1 August. The announcement comes after the States decision to terminate its contract with Agilisys earlier in July. The new agreement with Apogee will mean services and projects will be delivered by a range of providers rather than one.
