Jordan Morris' return gives Sounders more firepower vs. Rapids
With Jordan Morris back in the lineup, the Seattle Sounders' attack looks much more dangerous.
Morris scored 15 minutes into his first start since March 1 on Saturday, leading the Sounders to a 3-2 victory at Sporting Kansas City. It was Morris' 100th goal contribution in his MLS career.
The Sounders (9-6-6, 33 points) have gone undefeated (2-0-1) since participating in the Club World Cup and will look to continue that streak when they play host to the Colorado Rapids (8-10-5, 29 points) on Wednesday night.
Albert Rusnak and Jesus Ferreira also scored first-half goals for the Sounders, who held on despite allowing Sporting Kansas City to convert a pair of penalty kicks after intermission.
'Jesus and I have talked a lot about how we've been bummed we haven't been able to play together this year,' said Morris, who has been sidelined by a pair of hamstring injuries. 'His vision is incredible. To have a guy like that on the right side and Albert (Rusnak) on the left, it's just so dangerous for us as a team. It was hard to watch some of those games because we were creating so many chances, I just wanted to be out on the field playing with those guys.'
The Rapids snapped a three-match winless streak with a 3-0 victory against visiting Vancouver on Saturday.
Rafael Navarro, Calvin Harris, and Andreas Maxs scored for Colorado with Djordje Mihailovic assisting on all three goals. Goalkeeper Zack Steffen, who had been sidelined since May 14 after surgery on his right knee, made two saves in posting the shutout.
'We attacked, we defended, we moved the ball, we played some entertaining, energetic football,' said Rapids coach Chris Armas. 'For me, around the world, that's the benchmark.
'We'll have a quick turnaround and get ready for Seattle.'
The Western Conference rivals played to a 1-1 draw on April 26 in Commerce City, Colo., with Danny Musovski scoring for Seattle and Mihailovic answering for the Rapids.

Tiger-Cats looking for second straight win over RedBlacks

Sokolowski-Imagn Images) Bo Levi Mitchell and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats look to take down the host Ottawa RedBlacks for the second straight weekend on Sunday in the Canadian capital. Mitchell's 3-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Lawler with 1:54 remaining lifted the Tiger-Cats to a 23-20 victory over the RedBlacks last Saturday in Hamilton. It was the third consecutive win for Hamilton (3-2) and the third straight loss for Ottawa (1-5), which enters the East Division rematch with an 0-2 record at home. Mitchell passed for 266 yards and two TDs in last Saturday's win. Counterpart Dru Brown threw for 283 yards and one score with two second-half interceptions as Ottawa blew a 20-13 fourth-quarter lead. The Tiger-Cats only had four points at halftime. Mitchell, a two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player, has been in the league since 2012 and knows there will be days when the offense struggles. 'It makes you understand as a player, as a team, as a whole that when you don't have your best stuff it doesn't mean you're going to lose a game,' Mitchell said after the game. 'Tonight, we needed the defense, and it was there, it stepped up. I can't wait to watch that film, watch the defense and just admire the amazing game it had.' The RedBlacks offense was held to 313 yards (53 rushing) and Ottawa's costly turnovers included a fumbled punt return by Kalil Pimpleton. 'That was a very difficult loss,' Ottawa coach Bob Dyce said. 'Right now, where we're at as a team, we can't afford critical errors, and we had a couple of them. 'I'm never going to question Pimp's heart. He's out there playing offense and special teams ... he just wasn't able to secure that catch.' Mitchell entered the weekend with a league-leading 11 touchdown passes and just one interception, while Lawler leads the CFL with seven TD catches through five games. Brown, who has missed three of Ottawa's games this year due to injury, has completed 73.0 percent of his passes for 1,012 yards with five TDs and two picks. His top target is Eugene Lewis with 30 catches for 422 yards and a pair of scores. These teams will meet again at Hamilton in the Oct. 24 regular-season finale.

Angels hope to stay hot against Phillies

The second half of the season got off to a good start for the Angels on Friday, and they'll look to author another solid effort on Saturday when they continue their road series with the Philadelphia Phillies. After closing the first half of the season by taking two of three against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Angels hit three home runs in Friday's 6-5 victory in Philadelphia. Taylor Ward hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh, following earlier blasts by Jo Adell and Jorge Soler. 'I was just going to say that (Ward) needs to play in the humidity,' said Montgomery, the Angels' interim manager. 'The guy loves to play when it's warm. Again, three home runs tonight -- Soler, him and Jo keeps on doing it. That's kind of our MO. At any given time, any of our guys can do that.' The Phillies also hit three home runs, including two by Bryce Harper. The two-time MVP had previously managed only one homer in 11 games since returning from the disabled list in late June. 'He looks great,' Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson said. 'He's using the (whole) field and it looks like he's seeing the ball really well right now.' Kyle Schwarber added a solo homer for Philadelphia, carrying over the momentum from Tuesday's All-Star Game, where the veteran designated hitter took home MVP honors after homering on all three of his swings during the game-deciding home run derby. 'He does amazing things,' Thomson said. 'After that All-Star Game and coming up and first swing he hits the ball out of the ballpark, everybody was like, 'That's Schwarbs!'' Schwarber and Harper will aim for more productive swings against left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (4-6, 3.11 ERA), who was selected to this week's All-Star Game but elected not to pitch in the contest. Kikuchi's most recent outing came last Saturday against the Diamondbacks, when he allowed three runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Kikuchi has made one career start against Philadelphia -- in August 2023 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. He gave up one run and four hits in six innings but did not get a decision in the 2-1 victory. The Phillies will turn to veteran righty Taijuan Walker (3-5, 3.55), who has nine starts and 11 relief appearances this season. He last pitched July 8 against the San Francisco Giants, when he started and yielded one run and two hits over four innings. 'I think it can be very difficult,' Thomson said about Walker going back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen. 'I think it depends on the guy. I think it can be very difficult. In Walker's case, I think he's handled it very professionally. He's been a great team guy throughout this whole thing.' All nine of Walker's previous appearances against the Angels have come as a starter. In those outings, he has posted a 5-3 record with a 5.06 ERA.
