The Athletic names Oregon quarterback a Top 25 player in last quarter century
College football fans, and rightly so, get excited when their favorite team signs multiple five-star and four-star recruits. But sometimes the star system isn't an exact science.
Former Oregon Duck quarterback Marcus Mariota is a prime example. The 2014 Heisman Trophy winner came to Eugene as a three-star recruit and actually redshirted his first year as a Duck. But once he was put in Chip Kelly's system, there was no looking back.
Mariota has three incredible seasons at Oregon, and according to The Athletic, the Hawai'i native is No. 15 in their Top 25 college football players in the last quarter century.
"A three-star recruit from Hawaii, the soft-spoken 6-4 220-pound Mariota was bigger than you think — and faster too. He made everything look easy," writer Bruce Feldman said. "In three seasons, Mariota totaled 134 touchdowns with just 14 interceptions. He took home the 2014 Heisman Trophy, earning over 88 percent of the first-place votes while leading Oregon to the national title game.
"In the CFP semifinals against Florida State, Mariota threw for 338 yards to go with 62 rushing yards as the Ducks blew out the Noles 59-20. But Oregon lost in the title game, 42-20, against Ohio State. In his career at Oregon, Mariota was 12-3 in games against ranked opponents. All 12 of those wins came by double digits, with the Ducks averaging 48.5 points in those games."
Mariota left some big cleats to fill and until Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel made their way to Eugene, the two Heisman finalists recreated the notion that Oregon could be QBU once again, with Dante Moore looking to continue the tradition in 2025.

The dynamic coach helped Jackson State to two conference titles in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. After taking over the Buffaloes football program, Sanders also helped the team secure a 9-4 record in 2024 and was instrumental in both his son, Shedeur, and Travis Hunter getting drafted into the NFL. Hunter would go on to win the Heisman Trophy after exercising skills as an elite wide receiver and cornerback with the Buffaloes. Hunter thanked Sanders plenty when he won the award. Sanders is looking ahead to his third season helming the Buffaloes, but he must heal up first. The good news is the coach sounds like he will be ready to take the field again in the near future. LSU football QB Garrett Nussmeier makes appearance at New Orleans Saints minicamp
LSU football QB Garrett Nussmeier makes appearance at New Orleans Saints minicamp LSU football quarterback Garrett Nussmeier appeared at the New Orleans Saints minicamp this week. As Nussmeier prepares to begin his fifth year at LSU, Nussmeier's Dad, Doug Nussmeier, is getting ready for year one as the Saints' offensive coordinator. Nussmeier worked alongside new Saints head coach Kellen Moore in Philadelphia. Moore intends to call the plays, but tabbing a familiar face in Nussmeier to administer the offense made perfect sense. While at the camp, Nussmeier was seen talking to Moore. He also took time to sign autographs. There's already speculation about Nussmeier being an option for the Saints in the 2026 NFL Draft. Nussmeier is expected to be one of the top QBs on the board, and the Saints are projected to have one of the top picks. The Saints picked QB Tyler Shough in the 2025 draft, but there are questions about his long-term viability as the Saints' starter. Nussmeier was one of the best quarterbacks in the country as LSU finished the season on a three-game win streak. According to BetMGM, Nussmeier ranks No. 2 on the Heisman Trophy odds board, only trailing Texas QB Arch Manning. 2024 was Nussmeier's first season as LSU's full-time starter. In four years at LSU, Nussmeier has 5,772 yards and 40 touchdowns.

Baker Mayfield knows the Bucs need to put teams away in 2025
Baker Mayfield knows the Bucs need to put teams away in 2025 The Bucs offense is among the best in the NFL, and as a result, it allows for them to start fast out of the gate compared to their competition. Most of the time last season, the Bucs dominated the first half of games. It allowed them to be more aggressive with their calls on both sides of the ball and it made for a fun watch both for the players studying their film, and the fans. However, the second half of games always seemed less electric than the first half. Fans and players alike noticed that Baker Mayfield made the point while speaking to the media on Tuesday. When asked about the team and how coach Todd Bowles mentioned they need a "killer instinct," the former Heisman Trophy winner offered his thoughts. "A lot of times, when we would start fast, there's always that lull. I think in the past two years of me being here, overall, if you stand back and look at the beginning of the season to the middle of the season, it's not getting satisfied – always hitting the reset button whether it's the next week, or the next series, or the next play. That killer instinct…It doesn't matter what we're doing, we've got to put teams away when we're ahead." Mayfield has been involved in explosive offenses his entire life, going back to his high school days. What he is not used to is having to play from behind, but hopefully, a revamped defense will help with that. Oh, and adding Emeka Egbuka as a first-round pick should also help in outscoring opponents.
