Harvey Weinstein's office kept list of female ‘friends of Harvey', ex-aide tells trial

The Journal15-05-2025
HARVEY WEINSTEIN'S ASSISTANTS kept a list of female 'friends of Harvey' to invite to events and sometimes considered them a special category for guest lists, an ex-aide has said at the former film mogul's sex crimes retrial.
'A 'friend of Harvey' was a woman that he'd meet at events or parties or festivals or – somewhere,' said Elizabeth Perz, one of his executive assistants from 2011 to 2013.
The then-married Weinstein asked his assistants to invite these women to events, Ms Perz said.
It was such common practice that Weinstein's subordinates had a shorthand: 'Might as well add a FOH column,' Ms Perz advised colleagues by email as they discussed the attendee list for some 2013 awards season events.
Jurors were shown a roster of well over a dozen names, which Ms Perz said was kept in the office at Weinstein's now-defunct production company.
The names were broken down by geography, such as 'LA Friends' or 'Cannes/Etc/all invites.'
One 'LA Friends' entry was Jessica Mann, one of the three women whose allegations are at the heart of the retrial.
Weinstein has pleaded not guilty.
The once-powerful studio boss, who became a prime target of the #MeToo movement's campaign against sexual misconduct, maintains that he has never had sexual encounters that were not consensual.
During the last five years, he was convicted of various sex crimes in both New York and California.

But he is on trial again because an appeals court found that his New York trial was tainted by prejudicial evidence and overturned that conviction.
He is charged with raping Ms Mann in 2013 and forcing oral sex on two other women, separately, in 2006.
Ms Mann, who was a hairstylist and aspiring actor when she met Weinstein in the early 2010s, is expected to give evidence in the coming days or week.
The other accusers, Miriam Haley and Kaja Sokola, have already given evidence.
At Weinstein's 2020 trial, Ms Mann painted a complex and emotional picture of a years-long relationship that began consensually but became 'degrading' and volatile and eventually exploded into rape.
Still, she kept seeing him and sending warm messages because she wanted him to believe she 'wasn't a threat', she said.
Weinstein's lawyers at the time argued that Ms Mann willingly had a sexual liaison with him to serve her acting ambitions.
At one point during his defence's questioning in 2020, she began sobbing so forcefully that court ended early that day.
At the retrial on Thursday, jurors saw messages that Ms Perz had sent to Ms Mann about some Oscars-related parties in 2013.
'Harvey would like to extend an invitation to you' and a friend, Ms Perz wrote.
The Associated Press generally does not identify people who alleged they have been sexually assaulted unless they agree to be identified, which Ms Sokola, Ms Haley and Ms Mann have done.

Bus crash in Afghanistan kills more than 70 people returning from Iran

A bus crash in north-western Afghanistan has killed at least 79 people returning from Iran – including 19 children, an official said. Two people were also injured in the crash, Ministry of Interior spokesperson Abdul Mateen Qani told The Associated Press. Tolo News, citing the official, said the accident happened on Tuesday at about 8.30pm local time in Herat province. The bus collided with a truck and a motorbike, causing a massive fire that killed many on the spot, the outlet reported. Traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan, mainly due to poor road conditions and driver carelessness. Nearly 1.8 million Afghans have been forcibly returned from Iran in the past few months. A further 184,459 were sent back from Pakistan and more than 5,000 were deported from Turkey since the beginning of the year. Additionally, nearly 10,000 Afghan prisoners have been repatriated, mostly from Pakistan. The Taliban criticised neighbouring countries in July for the mass expulsion of Afghans, as Iran and Pakistan expel foreigners who they say are living there illegally. The ministry of refugees and repatriation said some six million Afghan refugees remain overseas.

Julio César Chávez Jr. deported to Mexico for alleged cartel ties and drug trafficking

Boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. has been deported to Mexico, where he's wanted for alleged cartel ties, following his arrest in the U.S. for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application. Chávez was handed over by authorities and admitted to a prison outside of the city of Hermosillo, in the northern state of Sonora, an official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the news at her daily press conference. 'I understand he was deported. I don't know if it was yesterday or this morning, but we were informed that he was arriving in Mexico,' Sheinbaum said. Chávez, 39, had a warrant for his arrest in Mexico for alleged arms and drug trafficking and ties to the Sinaloa Cartel. Alejandro Gertz Manero, Mexico's attorney general, said the investigation into Chávez started in 2019. The boxer, who is the son of legendary Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez, was arrested July 3 days after his high-profile fight with Jake Paul in California. Sheinbaum said after the arrest she hoped the boxer would be deported to face his charges. Chávez's father was a massive celebrity in the 1980s and '90s who mixed social circles with drug dealers and claimed to have been friends with drug lord Amado Carrillo Fuentes. The iconic fighter defended his son following his arrest, but has not spoken since the deportation. The younger Chávez has battled drug addiction for much of his boxing career, failing drug tests, serving suspensions and egregiously missing weight while being widely criticized for his intermittent dedication to the sport. Chavez won the WBC middleweight title in 2011 and defended it three times. He shared the ring with generational greats Canelo Álvarez and Sergio Martinez, losing to both. In 2012, he was convicted of drink driving in Los Angeles and sentenced to 13 days in jail. In January 2024, he was arrested on gun charges. Police said he possessed two AR-style ghost rifles. He was later freed on a $50,000 bond and on condition he went to a residential drug treatment facility. The case is still pending, with Chávez reporting his progress regularly. AP

Ireland's contender for the International Feature Film Oscar award has been selected

THE IRISH FILM and Television Academy (IFTA) has selected its entry to vy for a chance of being nominated for the International Feature Film category at the 2026 Oscars. Sanatorium, created by Irish filmmakers in the Ukrainian language, is set at a wellness centre in southern Ukraine near the frontlines of the war. It's been described as an 'incredibly unique and wryly humorous film'. Irish films have had some good luck in the international category at the Oscars in recent years; An Cailín Ciúin was nominated in 2023 and the Kneecap film was shortlisted in 2025. The Oscar International Feature Film category is a specific category for films produced in a language other than English. Each country can enter one film into the category in the hopes of becoming one of the nominated films. Films sent by Ireland are usually in Irish, but have also included movies in other languages in the past, including Viva (Spanish, Oscar shortlisted in 2006), In The Shadow of Beirut (Arabic, 2024), Gaza (Arabic, 2019) and As If I Am Not There (Serbo Croatian, 2011). Advertisement EclipsePicturesIE / YouTube The IFTA said that Sanatorium is a 'vividly cinematic real-life observation of a community searching for love, healing and happiness within the confines of a wellness centre near Odesa in southern Ukraine'. The film has 'colourful characters', with staff and visitors who are 'determined to have a holiday away from the outside world, a moment in their lives to 'restore' themselves despite the war, with curious treatments including a mysterious black mud, said to cure infertility, physical disabilities and various other ailments'. It was directed by Galway-born filmmaker Gar O'Rourke and produced by Venom Films by IFTA-winning Ken Wardrop and Andrew Freedman (His & Hers, Making the Grade), along with Samantha Corr. It was co-produced by 2332 Films Ukraine and made with support from Screen Ireland, BBC Storyville, MetFilm Sales, France TV, and Creative Europe. The film was edited by John Murphy, the editor of An Cailín Ciúin, with Denys Melnyk (Militantropos) as director of photography. It had its world premiere in Copenhagen in late March and is due to be shown in Irish cinemas in September. Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone...
