K-pop girl group Girls' Generation's Sooyoung joins ‘John Wick' spin-Off ‘Ballerina' as Katla Park

Girls' Generation member and actress Sooyoung has been confirmed for a role in Ballerina, the first official spin-off film from the John Wick franchise. Character posters released on 24 April revealed Sooyoung portraying Katla Park, the daughter of a Ruska Roma member named Il Seong.
Ballerina stars Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a trained assassin seeking vengeance for past wrongs. The story introduces new characters while featuring familiar faces from the John Wick universe, including Keanu Reeves reprising his role as the titular assassin.
Sooyoung's character, Katla Park, plays a critical role in the film's early plot. Eve is tasked with protecting Katla during one of her first assignments as a Ballerina. The new character posters signal a broader integration of international cast members into the expanding John Wick cinematic world.
This marks a major step for Sooyoung's global acting career, adding to her growing portfolio of roles in both Korean and international projects. She is also scheduled to appear in the upcoming Korean drama Second Shot at Love, airing on tvN from 12 May.
Directed by Len Wiseman and written by Shay Hatten, Ballerina expands the assassin-driven mythology that has defined the John Wick films. The spin-off aims to build on the original franchise's global success by spotlighting new leads and deepening the narrative surrounding the Ballerina programme introduced in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
Ballerina is set to premiere in US theatres on 6 June.

Labubu human-sized figure sells for over $150,000 at Beijing auction

BEIJING/SHANGHAI: A Beijing auction house sold a human-sized Labubu figure for 1.08 million yuan ($150,275.51) on Tuesday, setting a new record for the 'blind box' toy as it moves from craze to collectible. The event held by Yongle International Auction, which traditionally specialises in modern art as well as jewellery, marked the first ever auction dedicated to Labubu, toothy monster figurines that are mainly sold by China's toy company Pop Mart and have been at the centre of a global frenzy for the past year. The auction offered 48 lots for sale and was attended in person by roughly 200 people, while over a thousand bidders put down offers via Yongle's mobile app, the auction house said. The starting price for all the items started at zero and it eventually raised a total of 3.73 million yuan. The highest grossing item, a mint green, 131 cm (4.3 feet) tall Labubu figure, received several bids to sell for 1.08 million yuan. The auctioneer said it was the only one available in the world. A set of three Labubu sculptures, about 40 cm tall and made of PVC material, sold for 510,000 yuan. The set, from a series called 'Three Wise Labubu', was limited to a run of 120 sets in 2017 and another one sold for HKD 203,200 ($25,889.64) at Sotheby's most recent auction in Hong Kong. Labubu was created a decade ago by Hong Kong artist and illustrator Kasing Lung. In 2019, Lung agreed to let them be sold by Pop Mart, a Chinese toy company that markets collectable figurines often sold in 'blind boxes'. A buyer of a blind box toy does not know exactly what design they will receive until they open the packaging. The starting price for Labubu blind box toys sold in Pop Mart's stores is around 50 yuan. The character's popularity skyrocketed after Lisa of the Korean pop music group Blackpink was spotted with a Labubu and praised the doll in interviews and online posts. Many celebrities followed. In May, British football star David Beckham shared a photo on Instagram of his Labubu attached to a bag. One Yongle auction bidder, a restaurant owner who only gave her surname as Du, said she had planned to spend a maximum of 20,000 yuan but walked away empty handed as the final prices were too high. 'My child likes it so every time when Labubu released new products we will buy one or two items. It is hard to explain its popularity but it must have moved this generation,' she said.

Lilo & Stitch' stays on top in third week

The Disney film beat the latest 'Mission: Impossible' and 'Ballerina'. PHOTO: File Disney's family-friendly Lilo & Stitch kept up its dominance of the early summer North American box office, winning for a third week in a row with $32.5 million in ticket sales, industry estimates showed Sunday, as reported by AFP. The live-action remake of a 2002 animated film of the same name has so far raked in $335.8 million in the United States and Canada, and another $436 million abroad, Exhibitor Relations said. Debuting in second place at $25 million was Lionsgate's Ballerina, a John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas as a dancer turned contract killer, and co-starring Anjelica Huston. Keanu Reeves makes a brief appearance as the hitman Wick. "This is a weak opening for an action thriller spin-off," said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – the latest, and ostensibly last, in the hugely successful Tom Cruise spy thriller series based on a 1960s TV show – took third place with $15 million. The Paramount film has now grossed more than $449 million worldwide. In fourth place was Sony's Karate Kid: Legends, a sequel featuring Ralph Macchio - the star of the original 1984 classic - and action flick icon Jackie Chan, along with Ben Wang in the title role. It made $8.7 million at the domestic box office in its second week in theaters. And finishing up the top five was Warner Bros. and New Line's horror film Final Destination: Bloodlines, at $6.5 million. It has grossed $123.6 million so far at the domestic box office. Rounding out the top 10 were: The Phoenician Scheme ($6.25 million), Bring Her Back ($3.5 million), Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye ($3.1 million), Sinners ($2.9 million) and Thunderbolts ($2.5 million).

Ana de Armas reveals intense fitness and firearms training for 'John Wick' spin-off 'Ballerina"

Ana de Armas has revealed the demanding physical preparation she underwent for her role in Ballerina, the upcoming John Wick spin-off set to release on June 6. The actor, known for No Time to Die and Blonde, described her routine as 'pretty intense' and said she followed the programme 'to the letter.' Speaking in a Reddit r/AskMeAnything, de Armas said her training began with a strict, low-calorie nutrition plan and daily workouts that included 90 minutes of strength training. She then completed four to five hours of stunt coordination at action studio 8711, followed by firearm practice at a shooting range. To finish her day, she ran on a treadmill wearing a weighted vest. 'It was painful but I loved it,' she wrote. 'It felt good.' Ballerina is set between John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 and marks the first time a female lead fronts the franchise. De Armas added that action movies are complex, with fight choreography involving the entire crew. 'The choreography goes beyond just the fight. She also explained how her role in Ballerina required high levels of discipline and energy, especially for long action sequences filmed in a single take. Though she admitted she never saw herself as an action star, de Armas said she is enjoying the experience and named Kill Bill as a dream project.
