Chelsea reach Conference League semi-finals despite loss to Legia Warsaw at Stamford Bridge

Independent17-04-2025

Chelsea progressed to the last four of the Conference League but Enzo Maresca's problems continued to mount as Legia Warsaw won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in their quarter-final second leg to deepen supporters' frustrations with the head coach.
The Blues will be favourites to reach the final in Wroclaw on May 28 but there was little here to strike fear into any opponent, as the hosts were made to rely on their victory a week ago in Poland to go through 4-2 on aggregate.
A penalty by Czech forward Tomas Pekhart gave Legia the lead before Marc Cucurella levelled, but Chelsea were soon undone again when Steve Kapuadi scored early in the second half, as the Shed End glowed ominous red in the light of flares lit by the uproarious away fans.
The manner in which Chelsea were defeated at home by the team currently fifth in the Polish Ekstraklasa does not bode well for their bid to qualify for the Champions League and could have serious repercussions for the confidence fans place in Maresca, which has been sorely tested in recent months.
Cole Palmer was a surprise inclusion, Maresca perhaps sensing the chance for his number 10 finally to break a three-month scoring drought.
Legia did their best to oblige in the first five minutes, displaying abject carelessness on the ball and letting in first Palmer, who skewed badly wide when clean through, then Christopher Nkunku whose shot was saved.
A former Tottenham man quietened west London after nine minutes. Pekhart never played a first-team game for Spurs but left his mark on this tie, reaching a through-ball ahead of Filip Jorgensen who dived in recklessly and fouled.
The stand-in goalkeeper landed his ungainly routine by fumbling Pekhart's weak penalty into the corner.
Ryoya Morishita then galloped clear and finished inches past a post as Chelsea tottered at the back, their seemingly unobstructed path to the last four suddenly looking less than straightforward.
Order was restored just past the half-hour mark when Cucurella tapped in Jadon Sancho's square-ball.
The left-back, who has made a habit this season of bailing out his shot-shy side, has now scored four times since Palmer's last goal on 14 January. The Spain international found the net again before the break but was denied by VAR for offside.
Chelsea found themselves with bigger problems when Legia regained the lead at the start of the second half. Claude Goncalves was left free on the edge of the box to volley a corner towards goal, and unmarked in front of Jorgensen was Kapaudi who headed in.
There followed a long-awaited burst of urgency from Chelsea. Noni Madueke saw his volleyed effort saved on the line by goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic who got up smartly to beat away Tyrique George's rebound. George then tapped in Madueke's cross but the goal was ruled out for offside. It was a less than impressive performance but Chelsea clung on to limit the damage and reach the semi-finals.

Arsenal dealt blow as Nico Williams responds to Bayern Munich approach

Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams has told Bayern Munich he is 'very open' to joining them this summer, according to reports in Germany. Arsenal and Chelsea have Williams on their shortlist for the summer transfer window with both Premier League clubs wanting to strengthen in wide areas. Williams was one of Spain's standout stars at Euro 2024 and finished this season with 11 goals and seven assists for Bilbao, who finished fourth in La Liga to secure a place in next season's Champions League. Bayern Munich have also entered the running to sign Williams having lost Leroy Sane, who arrived in Turkey on Wednesday ahead of his move to Galatasaray on a free transfer. According to Sky Germany, Bayern's sporting director, Max Eberl, and sporting director, Christoph Freund, have held talks with Williams' representatives. It's also claimed that Williams himself has told Bayern that he is 'very open' to joining them this summer. Bayern, however, will need to pay the €58 million (£48.1m) release clause in Williams' deal with Bilbao, as well as meet the 22-year-old's salary demands, which are understood to be in the region of €380,000 (£322,000) a week. More Trending Speaking in April, Williams gave no indication that he would push for a move away from Bilbao this summer. 'I'm super happy here and feel well,' the winger said. 'I've always wanted to feel important here.' Bilbao have also been in talks with Williams to extend his contract, which expires in the summer of 2027. Chelsea sent message by Dortmund over failed Jamie Gittens transfer

Borussia Dortmund have left the door open for Chelsea to make another attempt to sign Jamie Gittens this summer. Chelsea held advanced talks with Dortmund over a deal for the 20-year-old before the transfer window closed on Tuesday night. But after Chelsea's initial €35 million (£29.5m) bid was rejected, their follow up offer of €50m (£42.2m) was also turned down by the Bundesliga side. It's understood that Dortmund were holding out for a €65m (£54.9m) fee for Gittens, who has now been named in their Club World Cup squad. Dortmund will play Brazilian side Fluminense, South Korea's Ulsan HD and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in Group F. However, Dortmund's sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, admits an agreement with Chelsea for Gittens could be reached after the tournament. 'There was contact with Chelsea, who got in touch again yesterday afternoon,' Kehl told Ruhr Nachrichten. 'We spoke again on the phone. In the end, we were unable to reach an agreement because we have different ideas about the player's current value. 'We're happy that Jamie will now be at the Club World Cup and are pleased that he's staying. More Trending 'We examined it very seriously, but in the end, we also made a decision for ourselves. 'But it's still absolutely fine that Chelsea made this attempt. And again, we're in good dialogue. We'll see how things develop in the future.' Chelsea's Club World Cup campaign begins against Los Angeles FC on June 16. Enzo Maresca's side will then play Flamengo on June 20 before their final Group D game against ES Tunis on June 25. Jonny Evans makes surprise announcement on future after Man Utd release him

Jonny Evans has been released by Manchester United and the defender remains uncertain about what could come next in his career when he leaves the Red Devils this month Jonny Evans is in no rush to make a decision on his future after it was confirmed he would be released by Manchester United. The defender is set to see his contract expire at the end of the month with no renewal forthcoming. But despite the 37-year-old being firmly in the twilight of his career, no official announcement on a retirement has arrived, though he is expected to do so. The Northern Irish defender is set to reflect on his situation before making a decision over his next steps. ‌ Evans is set to end his second spell at Old Trafford having returned to the club in 2023 to take on a senior role in the dressing room and to provide additional depth in United's backline. The veteran probably played more than anticipated making 30 appearances in his first season back to see his contract extended by a further year. ‌ Evans was called upon less frequently last term in a difficult season and joins the likes of Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof in exiting the club. Tom Heaton remains in discussions over potentially extending his stay. It had been suggested Evans' departure could mark the end of his career, after Evans noted 'It was stay here or retire' last summer. The defender is yet to make plans however. "I'm not sure yet," Evans told BBC Sport NI when asked about his future . "I'll take a bit of time. I don't feel like I'm in a rush to do anything." In his eight years away from Manchester, Evans spent three years at West Bromwich Albion and five years at Leicester. The central defender added an FA Cup victory in 2021 to three Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and two League Cup success across his two stints with the Red Devils. Evans earned 107 caps for Northern Ireland and provided some analysis on where the nation stands during his appearance on BBC. The ex-Sunderland loanee is hopeful his former boss, Michael O'Neill can lead the country to World Cup qualification. ‌ "When you've got Michael O'Neill in charge, he gives everyone a little bit of hope," said Evans, "He's taken the team to a major tournament before and if you want anyone in charge, it's him. "When I look at this team it reminds me of ourselves. He's playing five at the back and he has Isaac Price, he's on a good run of form. "You look throughout the team, you see Dan Ballard and Trai Hume getting promoted, they'll be playing Premier League football and that'll only be good for the team. I'm excited. Over the next couple of years I think we'll see them progress together." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football.
