Proteas to meet Black Caps in Tri-Series final after beating Zim
Ruben Hermann and Rassie van der Dussen made half-centuries as the Proteas romped to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in their third match of the T20 Tri-Series at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday afternoon. The result saw the Proteas bounce back from defeat against New Zealand on Wednesday. Chasing Zimbabwe's target of 145, Hermann and captain Van der Dussen were the star performers, sharing a 106-run partnership. They set the ship back on course after Zimbabwe's Tinotenda Maposa made early inroads in the first power play, removing openers Lhuan-dre Pretorius (4) and Reeza Hendricks (6). Though he could not carry the Proteas over the line after being bowled by Richard Ngavara, Herman's 63 off 36 balls played a crucial role in getting the Proteas their second win of the series, which confirmed a place in the final on Saturday with a game in hand. Game. Set. Match 🇿🇦💥 The Proteas Men beat Zimbabwe to book their place in next Saturday's Tri-Series final ✅🏆 #SSCricket | #ZIMvRSA — SuperSport 🏆 (@SuperSportTV) July 20, 2025 Van der Dussen finished with an impressive unbeaten 52 runs. He was accompanied by Dewald Brevis at the end as the Proteas got home with 16 balls to spare. Opener Brian Bennett belted 61 runs off 43 balls to help the home team to a respectable total of 144 for six. Bennett was the mainstay of the innings, with most of the Chevrons' top and middle orders struggling to get going. He paced his innings well, going at a good strike rate of 141.86 while scoring seven fours and three sixes. The only other major contribution came via the unbeaten 36 of Ryan Burl, who fought against accurate Proteas death bowling while losing partners at the other end. The Proteas pacers did not give Bennett and his opening partner Wessly Madhevere any room to breathe after they won the toss and bowled. It took almost three overs for Zimbabwe to get the ball to the boundary. And just when they were getting their groove on, Cobin Bosch had Madhevere caught at mid-off by Van der Dussen for 13. Bosch continued with his persistent good length, leading to the dismissal of Clive Madande, who hit the ball straight back at him for a caught-and-bowled. With Bennett and Sikandar Raza in the middle, Zimbabwe concluded the first power play on 29/2, but Raza had a short stay at the crease, being caught at deep square by Nandre Burger off the bowling of spinner Nqaba Peter's tossed up delivery. Bennett stayed composed despite losing partners and, with Burl, put on a stand of 78 runs off 47 deliveries. The 21-year-old Bennett progressed to his third career fifty before the Proteas bowlers regrouped to counter. Ngidi outfoxed the dangerous Bennett with a slower ball, which bowled him in the 15th over. In the next over, Burger removed Tashinga Musekiwa for a golden duck, caught in the deep by Dewald Brevis. The Proteas' death bowlers mixed it up in the closing overs with yorkers and slower balls to restrict the Zimbabweans. Bosch finished with economical figures of two for 16 runs. South Africa play New Zealand on Tuesday (1pm) before taking on the Black Caps in the final on Saturday (1pm).

Fireballs clinch TNL title in thriller against Crinums
Nonsikelelo Mazibuko of Fireballs is challenged by Ane Retief of Crinums during their Telkom Netball League final at the Durban International Convention Centre. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix It was a case of third time lucky for the Golden Fireballs as they pulled off a dramatic 47-40 victory over the Free State Crinums in the Telkom Netball League final at the Durban ICC on Sunday afternoon. The unbeaten Fireballs started the brighter from the centre pass, but the Crinums responded swiftly. Centre Refiloe Nketsa began to dictate proceedings from midcourt, her pinpoint feeds troubling the Fireballs' defence. Goal attack Owethu 'Sammy' initially struggled to impose herself on the contest for Dr Elsje Jordaan's team but grew into the game with time. Coach Martha Mosoahle-Samm's Crinums intensified their defence and opened up a five-goal cushion (11-6) with just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter. However, the Fireballs roared back with a super shot from Ngubane and some clinical finishing from goal shooter Nonsikelelo Mazibuko, reducing the deficit to two goals by the break in play (13-11). In a fiercely contested second quarter, the Gauteng side tightened their defence as the match see-sawed. Nketsa was sin-binned for a heavy challenge on Fireballs goal defence Cornelia Mupenda in the dying seconds of the half. The teams were deadlocked at 23-23 going into the break. Despite trailing 34-30 at one stage, the Crinums refused to wilt. But the Fireballs maintained control and led by seven goals with under 10 minutes to go — a gap they would not relinquish. Their composure in the final stretch sealed a historic maiden Telkom Netball League title for the Gauteng side, crowning a flawless campaign.

Erasmus faces selection puzzle ahead of Rugby Championship squad announcement
Edwill van der Merwe scored a brace aganst Georgia on Saturday and has surely staked a claim in the Rugby Championship squad. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Rassie Erasmus will name his 36-man squad on Tuesday for the upcoming Rugby Championship matches against Australia — and the big question is who will miss out, given the Springboks' current embarrassment of riches. The head coach has used 48 players over the past four weeks, with few letting themselves down and several newcomers delivering notable performances. At the weekend, Erasmus' bold gamble on an entirely uncapped front row — Boan Venter, Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouché — paid off handsomely. Cobus Wiese, ironically filling in for his suspended brother Jasper at No 8, impressed in a position that's not his natural home. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Edwill van der Merwe once again underlined his growing reputation, staking a real claim alongside the likes of Kurt-Lee Arendse and Cheslin Kolbe, while Canan Moodie continued his smooth transition into a capable deputy for Jesse Kriel at outside centre. One clear conclusion Erasmus can draw from this block of matches is that Grant Williams is currently his top-performing scrumhalf. Yet, it was also encouraging to see Faf de Klerk fight his way back into contention, with a feisty and skilful second-half cameo. Kwagga Smith and Pieter-Steph du Toit continue to be tireless warriors, while Ruan Nortjé's recent displays suggest he has matured into a genuine international-class lock — a development that will please Erasmus and his selectors. 'We are fairly happy, it could've been better,' Erasmus said with typical understatement, after Georgia were brushed aside 55-10. 'What we expected from them was physicality and disruption, and we certainly got that. But I don't think it was a performance over the full 80 minutes from us. "There were a lot of guys who made a lot of errors today because of how Georgia played — and I don't mean that in a negative way. They disrupt very well.' Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu had a mixed outing at flyhalf, but Erasmus expressed no concern over the young playmaker's form. Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix 'Sacha is not necessarily our first-choice 10. We've got Manie (Libbok), who is pretty much on song, and when Handré (Pollard) came on, he was pretty solid,' the coach explained. 'If you just look at Sacha's goal kicking — he missed four — but I think he ended well. In the warm-up, he picked up a hip pointer injury, but he still wanted to play. 'I don't know if that was an excuse for how he kicked at poles, but he definitely ran it out. 'We like flyhalves who try things on the field, not just play safely in their little box. And he certainly wasn't one of the guys who made the most errors today. Georgia thrive on spoiling and disrupting, and a lot of guys struggled with that. 'I'm not frustrated with Sacha — it's only his second start for us this year. He's still young compared to our other flyhalves.' Erasmus confirmed that his Rugby Championship squad will have a more settled look, with experimentation largely shelved for now. 'The Rugby Championship is a step up from Tier Two nations, the Barbarians and the Italy matches,' he said. The coach added that nine additional players will be placed on standby as injury cover.
