Sudan's voices

Al Jazeera15-04-2025

Zeinab, 34 From South Darfur, displaced to a neighbouring country How wonderful our days were before the war - especially Eids. I cherish the memories of spending time with my family. My brother lived in the south, but he always returned to Sudan for Eid. We would all return to Nyala during the holidays, no matter where we were studying or working.
Some evenings, we would roam out in the valley. Nyala is beautiful, stunning scenery. Other days were for socialising with our neighbours, days and nights full of dallouka music, and jabana coffee sessions with the other women. Life was so nice before the war. I mean, there were challenges, but life was so nice. When the war started, every day was scarier than the last.
Like trying to get out of Khartoum and to Darfur, and the thoughts that haunted me. I was afraid that I may never see my family again. I went to Wad Madani first, to try to get through to Darfur, but there was no clear route, every time I tried, there would be airstrikes on the roads. Eventually I took the road out of Sudan that goes to Ethiopia.
Now, we're all in different countries. I'm in one, my mother is in one while my father is in another, my siblings are in different countries. Our family is spread across seven countries. I fear I'll never see them again. That's the fear I've had inside me since the start of the war.
