Brunson, Towns keep Knicks alive in Pacers rout

NEW YORK: Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns combined for 56 points as the New York Knicks kept their NBA playoff campaign alive with a 111-94 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Trailing 3-1 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals, the Knicks roared back to life in front of a star-studded Madison Square Garden crowd with a wire-to-wire win that sets up a Game 6 in Indianapolis on Saturday. Knicks talisman Brunson was once again the standout performer for New York, finishing with 32 points including four three-pointers. Towns, whose presence in the New York lineup was only confirmed shortly before tip-off following a left knee injury in Game 4, was also a pivotal figure with 24 points and 13 rebounds. 'We were just able to get stops early and we would convert. We just found a way,' Brunson told TNT television. 'I just felt like we played better. We played to our standards. Give them credit for the way they played, but we played Knicks basketball tonight.' Towns said there was never any chance of him not lining up. 'It was do or die – nothing was going to stop me from playing this game,' Towns said. Brunson set the tone from the get-go, rattling in 14 points as the Knicks sprinted into an early 23-13 lead in the first quarter. Although Indiana came back to cut the lead to 27-23 at the end of the first, the Knicks continued to control possession, unsettling Indiana with the speed of their fast break offense and neutralizing Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton. New York led 56-45 at half time with Haliburton scoring just four points in the first half. Haliburton would go on to finish with a series-low eight points, shooting just two-of-seven from the field. The Pacers had staged an epic comeback to take the opening game of the series in New York last week, overturning a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to stun the Knicks. There was a hint that another fightback might be in the offing when Indiana slashed a 20-point New York lead to just 10 points in the third quarter. But the Knicks regrouped and stretched their lead once more before closing out the win to keep the series alive. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle blamed his team's failure to threaten the Knicks – it was the first time in the series Indiana had been restricted to less than 100 points – on their sluggish start. 'We didn't play with the level of force that we needed to,' Carlisle said. 'We lost the rebound battle, we lost the turnover battle and we didn't shoot well. 'They had a lot to do with that, so give them credit, but we're going to have to play much better. 'To start the game we didn't have the right level of attitude necessary in this environment. It was a bad start. We never had a lead in the game. There were a multitude of things that were going wrong. 'There were little stretches where we got traction, but it was never enough.'

Pacers beat Knicks to move one win shy of reaching NBA Finals

WASHINGTON: Tyrese Haliburton delivered his second career playoff triple double to power Indiana over New York 130-121 on Tuesday, lifting the Pacers one win from the NBA Finals. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Haliburton scored 32 points, passed off 15 assists and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds while making no turnovers over 38 minutes becoming the first player in NBA playoff history with 30-15-10 and no turnovers. Indiana, who blew a 20-point lead in a Game 3 home loss, seized a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals with the home triumph. 'I was just trying to be aggressive, trying to respond,' Haliburton said. 'I felt like I let the team down in game three so it was important to come out here and just make plays. 'Guys put me in position to make plays and play my game and man, it's a big win for us.' Game 5 is set for Thursday in New York's Madison Square Garden. 'I'm excited about it. It's going to be a lot of fun,' Haliburton said. 'It's a tough environment to play in. We've got to be ready. Just one more game, take what we can from this and be ready for game five.' The East winner will face either Oklahoma City or Minnesota in the NBA Finals starting June 5. Haliburton's father was in the arena after a month-long ban following an on-court incident with Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo earlier in the playoffs. 'Hell yeah. I'm glad pop is in the building,' Haliburton said. 'It makes it that much more sweet. Had a little bit to do with it.' Haliburton, who also had four steals, made 11-of-23 shots from the floor and 5-of-12 from three-point range. 'We tried giving him different looks,' Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. 'We'll look at the film. We just have to do better.' Pascal Siakam added 30 points for the Pacers while Bennedict Mathurin scored 20 points off the bench for Indiana. 'We just wanted to come out with more energy, more urgency,' Siakam said. 'I thought we did that from the beginning. They made runs but we stuck to our game plan.' Indiana coach Rick Carlisle praised Mathurin. 'He was great. He gave us a huge lift,' he said. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 31 points while Karl-Anthony Towns had 24 points and 12 rebounds, O.G. Anunoby had 22 points and Mikael Bridges netted 17 points. New York gave up 17 turnovers. 'Our defense wasn't good enough. Our defense and turnovers probably hurt us,' Thibodeau said. 'The important thing is to reset. We're not playing the series. We're playing the game.' Towns suffered a left knee injury defending a drive by Myles Turner with 2:10 remaining but stayed in the game. 'He was able to go back in. That was a good sign,' Thibodeau said. 'We'll see how he is after he's evaluated.' 'I'm only thinking about the loss. I'm not thinking about that right now,' Towns said when asked about his knee. The Pacers last made the NBA Finals in 2000 and have never won the NBA title. The Knicks, on the brink of elimination, have not reached the NBA Finals since 1999 and their last crown was in 1973. 'You've got to give it your all,' Brunson said. 'It's that simple.' Indiana led 43-35 after the first quarter as Haliburton had 15 points, six assists and five rebounds to start his no-turnover night. 'To not have any turnovers is pretty remarkable,' Carlisle said. 'I know he takes great pride in it. That's a motivating factor.' The Pacers led 69-64 at halftime and stretched the lead to 102-91 entering the fourth quarter. New York went on a 10-2 run to pull within 115-109, but could not catch Indiana and Obi Toppin's three-pointer with 46 seconds remaining to establish a 126-116 Indiana lead sealed New York's fate.

Pacers take 2-0 lead over Knicks as Pascal Siakam scores 39 points in 114-109 victory

NEW YORK: Pascal Siakam scored a playoff career-high 39 points, and the Indiana Pacers beat the New York Knicks 114-109 on Friday night for a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Myles Turner added 16 points and Tyrese Haliburton had 14 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds for the Pacers, who head home halfway to their second trip to the NBA Finals. They lost to the Lakers in 2000 in their only shot at the title. Game 3 is Sunday in Indiana, though the Pacers might prefer to keep it right where it is. They have won six straight road games since falling at Milwaukee in Game 3 of the first round. Siakam finished 15 for 23 from the field on a night nobody else on the high-scoring Pacers had more than five baskets. 'Special game,' Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. 'In the first half he was the guy that got us going and got us through some difficult stretches.' Jalen Brunson had 36 points and 11 assists for the Knicks, who need a quick turnaround or their first appearance in the conference finals in 25 years will be a brief one. They defended much better after their crushing collapse in a 138-135 overtime loss in Game 1, but couldn't find enough scoring to come back after a bad start to the fourth quarter. Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns each had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Knicks, but Towns played just 28 minutes as coach Tom Thibodeau went longer with backup Mitchell Robinson, a much better defender who grabbed nine rebounds. No team has lost the first two games at home and come back to win a series in the conference finals. 'Going into the fourth quarter it's a tie ballgame. We've just got to make better plays, more winning plays,' Thibodeau said. It was tied at 81 after three, before the Pacers opened the fourth with a 13-4 run to move ahead 94-85 on Siakam's 3-pointer with 9:17 remaining. They would quickly push the margin back to around there every time the Knicks got any momentum, and it was 110-100 after another basket by Siakam with 2:45 to play. The Knicks scored nine straight to make it 110-109 on Josh Hart's basket with 14 seconds to go. Aaron Nesmith made two free throws for the Pacers, Brunson was well off on a 3-point attempt and Turner finished it out with two free throws. The 50th playoff meeting between the rivals — the Pacers lead 28-22, all since 1993 — more closely resembled their defensive battles of the 1990s than the shootout of two nights earlier. The Knicks led that one by 14 with 2:45 to play before the Pacers caught them on Haliburton's jumper as time expired and won it in OT. This time, Indiana raced to a 19-9 lead, but the Knicks quickly caught them when Robinson and Deuce McBride entered and the game remained within a single-digit margin nearly the entire rest of the night.
