Taiwan accuses China of endangering aviation safety with illegal flight corridor
According to Focus Taiwan, China announced on Sunday the opening of the northwest-to-southeast W121 route, linking Dongshan in Zhejiang Province to the M503 flight path in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) immediately criticized the move as provocative, warning it undermines aviation safety and regional stability.
Taiwan's Civil Aviation Administration echoed MAC's concerns, describing the decision as 'regrettable' and vowing to monitor the situation to ensure flight safety. The agency stressed that China's failure to coordinate with Taiwan on such a significant adjustment violates ICAO standards, which mandate prior consultation with affected parties.
As per Taipei Times, this is not the first time China has acted unilaterally, citing previous route launches like W122 and W123, which were introduced alongside the eastward shift of the M503 in early 2024. Countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, Sweden, and the Netherlands had previously expressed concern over similar actions by Beijing.
Focus Taiwan noted that Taiwan will again leverage the upcoming 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal to challenge Beijing's actions and press for greater inclusion in international aviation forums.
Despite protests, W122 and W123 remain active, underscoring that diplomatic pressure alone may not be enough to compel Beijing to comply with ICAO norms.
Taiwan, which last attended an ICAO assembly in 2013, remains excluded due to pressure from Beijing. The government reiterated its call to be included in ICAO to help safeguard global aviation safety.
Taiwanese authorities emphasized that exclusion from ICAO not only marginalizes Taiwan but also undermines global aviation safety by leaving a critical player out of essential coordination.
As China continues to bypass established norms, Taipei warned that unchecked unilateral actions could escalate regional instability. Taiwan reaffirmed its commitment to working with international partners to uphold safety, transparency, and rule-based order in the skies. (ANI)

New Delhi [India], August 6 (ANI): Foreign affairs expert Subhash Goyal has criticised US President Donald Trump's decision to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on India over its purchase of Russian oil, warning that the move will damage trade ties and hurt both Indian and American consumers. 'Look, India and Russia have a very old relationship. And Russia is a trusted friend of ours. If we're importing oil from Russia, the reason for that is that we have to look at our oil security in our agriculture sector and transport sector. And it is not that we are doing it only through Russia, but we are doing it from 10-15 countries. And the European Union is also doing it through Russia in a large number, but all the sanctions are being imposed on India,' Goyal told ANI. 'So, I don't understand what the strategy is, but this will cause a lot of loss to our exports. Our exports are more than $100 billion, and our exports will be reduced by at least $30-40 billion. And the sectors like electronics or steel, which already account for 50% of our exports, will not be affected so much. Or if they are excluding pharmaceuticals, then it will not be affected so much. But still, our neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Vietnam will be subject to 10% tariffs. Singapore also has a 10% tariff. So, either our exporters will have to route through there. And more than us, the American industry and the American consumers will be more affected,' he added. Goyal stressed that the US depends significantly on Indian goods and services, including in the technology sector. 'Because, look, today there are medicines and other things which a lot of industry depends on Indian goods. Our software industry, all their technology, at this time, 30-50% are of Indian origin. Whether it is Microsoft, Google, Apple, or any big company, they have a lot of software development and manufacturing units in India. So, what will happen with this is that America is pushing India towards Russia and China,' he said. Highlighting the geopolitical implications, he added, 'Because, in Asia-Pacific, India was a partner of America, which was a balance, which was reducing China's influence in Asia-Pacific. So, India was countering it. So, for so many years, American diplomacy has increased relations with India, joint military exercises have taken place. So, all those things will go on the back burner. And I think that American consumers will start protesting.' Citing the impact on tourism and bilateral relations, Goyal said, 'Because, look, now the tourists in America -- first the tourists from Canada used to come. First they upset Canada, so the tourists from Canada stopped coming. They upset Europe a lot, so the tourists from the European Union stopped coming. And because of the war in Europe, the condition of America is a bit worse. So, the tourists from India will also stop coming. Because India's visa is waiting for a year. And Indian tourists will also go there, because businessmen combine tourism and business.' On the trade front, he said, 'And if there is no business in America, they say that necessity is the mother of invention. So, we will have to find new markets. There are markets in South America, Africa, Japan, Australia, Asian countries. And we will have to increase our trade with China and Russia. So, we have just signed a favourable trade agreement with the UK. So, I think this geopolitical situation is changing the world. And in this, India will definitely lose exports. But more than us, America and America's goodwill are losing.' He added, 'Look, there will be a short-term difference in tariffs. But in the long term, our products are good. We will get more markets. And there are more than 200 countries in the world. America is only one country. Okay, America's economy is our largest importer, but this does not mean that we will be completely dependent on America.' Criticising Washington's trade policy, Goyal said, 'America is kicking its feet because America's influence in the world is decreasing with tariffs. Now, in retaliation, we will also impose tariffs on American products. So, this is a trade war. Trump is starting tariffs all over the world. And this is not good for international trade and peace in the world. So, I pray to God that good sense will prevail. And now, there is going to be a delegation from America for trade negotiations. And I hope that in those trade negotiations, mutually beneficial tariffs will be decided.' Echoing criticism of the move, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday termed the United States' decision to impose additional tariffs on India over its oil imports from Russia as 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,' asserting that New Delhi will take 'all actions necessary to protect its national interests.' In an official statement, the MEA said, 'The United States has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India.' 'It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,' the statement added. 'We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests,' the MEA stressed. This came after US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an Executive Order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India. According to the order issued by the White House, Trump cited matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, as well as other relevant trade laws, for the increase, claiming that India's imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, pose an 'unusual and extraordinary threat' to the United States. After the order, the total tariff on Indian goods will be 50 per cent. While the initial duty becomes effective on August 7, the additional levy will come into effect after 21 days and will be imposed on all Indian goods imported into the US, except for goods already in transit or those meeting specific exemptions. The Executive Order also allows for modifications based on changing circumstances, including potential retaliation by other countries or steps taken by Russia or India to address the national emergency. 'Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 per cent,' the order stated. 'This rate of duty shall be effective with respect to goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time 21 days after the date of this order, except for goods that (1) were loaded onto a vessel at the port of loading and in transit on the final mode of transit prior to entry into the United States before 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time 21 days after the date of this order,' the order added. Sweden, Norway, Denmark pledge USD 500m to Ukraine
Kyiv [Ukraine], August 6 (ANI): Sweden, Norway, and Denmark have pledged a combined USD 500 million to a NATO program supplying advanced US weapons, including Patriot missiles, to Ukraine, Khaama Press reported. The aid follows a proposal initially supported by US President Donald Trump, in which the US would provide the weapons while European allies cover the cost, as per Khaama Press. Sweden is contributing USD 275 million, Norway USD 146 million, and Denmark USD 90 million. The funds will be transferred to NATO immediately to ensure the rapid delivery of weapons to Ukrainian forces. Defence ministers from Norway and Denmark stressed the urgency of the situation. 'Speed is vital,' said Denmark's minister. Norway echoed this, emphasizing that Ukraine needs the equipment 'as soon as possible,' as quoted by Khaama Press. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the move, calling it a 'new foundation for European security' and a deterrent to further Russian aggression. The new NATO initiative, known as the 'Ukraine Defense Capability Coalition,' also includes Canada and other European nations. The Netherlands was the first country to join, pledging EUR500 million earlier this week. This support reflects increasing European commitment to help Ukraine defend itself as the war with Russia, now in its third year, continues to escalate. Zelenskyy on Tuesday said he had a 'productive conversation' with US President Donald Trump, with the main focus on ending the war with Russia and coordinating positions between Kyiv and Washington. Zelenskyy said the two leaders discussed achieving a 'just and lasting peace' and expressed appreciation for Trump's efforts to help end the conflict. 'It is truly a must to stop the killing as soon as possible, and we fully support this. Many months could have already passed without war, had Russia not been prolonging it,' Zelenskyy said in a statement shared on X.

Israel's Foreign Minister slams Hamas for "sadistic propaganda campaign" involving hostages
Tel Aviv [Israel], August 4 (ANI): Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa'ar condemned 'Hamas and Islamic Jihad' for what he described as a 'deliberate and well-planned sadistic propaganda campaign' using hostages, following the release of disturbing videos showing two Israeli captives. Addressing international media at a press conference, Sa'ar said, 'Hamas and Islamic Jihad are using the starvation and torture of hostages as part of a deliberate and well-planned sadistic propaganda campaign. The issue of the hostages must be front and center on the world stage!' The remarks came after videos were released showing hostages Evyatar David and Rom Braslavski in visibly deteriorated condition. 'The world witnessed their terrible condition. Starved. Tortured. Evyatar was forced to dig his own grave. The world saw the thick arm of the well-fed terrorist - next to the starved and tortured Evyatar,' Sa'ar said. He drew comparisons between Hamas and notorious groups, stating, 'On October 7th - and since then - Hamas has committed evil crimes like the Nazis and ISIS did.' 'There are still 50 hostages cruelly being held in the dungeons of Gaza,' the minister added, criticising the absence of international oversight. 'We see the dire condition of our starved hostages - yet they still have not seen representatives of the Red Cross, despite this being explicitly agreed upon.' He further alleged that the starvation campaign was being manipulated for media purposes. 'These organisations also planned the starvation campaign of lies together. The amount of aid entering proves that it is a fake propaganda campaign.' Sa'ar warned that hostage-taking is being used as a strategic tool by terror groups to ensure their survival. 'Terror states and organisations kidnap civilians in order to ensure their own survival and interests. Innocent civilians are inhumanely used as tools by terrorists to achieve their goals. In the case of Hamas - to force upon us their conditions: Remaining in power in Gaza.' Labelling the situation as a global threat, Sa'ar said, 'This is a dangerous phenomenon that could happen tomorrow anywhere. The international community must make it not worthwhile for the terrorists. The world must put an end to the phenomenon of kidnapping civilians. It must be front and center on the world stage.' Sa'ar announced his travel plans to New York to push the issue at the United Nations. 'This is why I will head to New York tonight: To participate in a special UN Security Council session, which I initiated, taking place tomorrow on the situation of the hostages. I thank the US and Panama for answering our call and helping convene this important and urgent meeting.' The minister expressed appreciation for countries that joined Israel's diplomatic efforts. 'That is why I reached out to my colleagues and asked them to urgently put the issue of the hostages at the center of the global agenda. I thank them for showing up and for raising their voice.' Calling out international media, Sa'ar said: 'The unbalanced and twisted anti-Israeli agenda of a huge part of the international media has once again been exposed. Just as there is no acknowledgement of Israel's humanitarian efforts in the Gaza Strip - and Israel is doing a lot - the horrible images of the hostages were painfully missing from the front pages of The New York Times, The Washington Post, and most of the global media. It is shameful!' He demanded the 'immediate and unconditional release of all the hostages,' calling out what he described as global hypocrisy. 'Certain countries and leaders try to create a 'symmetry' between both sides - between hostages and murderers. But this is a distortion! There is no symmetry here!' Taking aim at French President Emmanuel Macron's comments, Sa'ar said: 'You heard what the President of France said. Hostages 'on both sides.' But there aren't! On one side you have hostages, brutally kidnapped from their homes on Oct. 7th, tortured and held in cruel captivity for almost two years by Hamas. On the other side, evil murderers serving life sentences. The simple truth: There are hostages on one side. And terrorists on the other.' He accused countries such as France, the UK, and Canada of rewarding Hamas through diplomatic steps. 'The steps taken by countries like France, the UK, Canada and others are a pure prize for terror. A huge gift for Hamas.' Citing statements from Hamas, he said: 'Here you have a senior member of Hamas clearly stating: These are the fruits of October 7th. These countries must understand the consequences of their actions.' Sa'ar claimed that moves to recognise a virtual Palestinian state derailed hostage negotiations. 'I warned on this very stage that recognizing a virtual Palestinian State will lead to the assassination of the chances to reach a hostage deal and ceasefire. This is exactly what happened.' Calling the diplomatic moves 'immoral' and 'politically foolish,' he said: 'These steps have only hardened Hamas' stance during critical days in the negotiations for a hostage deal and ceasefire and rewarded them for their terror. It is a huge mistake. It is morally distorted. It is geopolitically foolish.' He closed with a strong message to the global community: 'It is time for these countries to do some soul-searching.
