Commanders' Daron Payne Takes On New Role Amid Major Change

The Washington Commanders gave emerged as a title contender after some fantastic play from quarterback Jayden Daniels in his rookie season. But the defensive side of the ball won't be the same.

Back at the beginning of March, the team decided to release their star defensive lineman, Jonathan Allen, after they were unable to find a trade partner for him. As a result, someone will have to step up in his place.
The prime candidate to do that is veteran defensive tackle Daron Payne. And in a recent article by ESPN's John Keim, he thinks that he can do just that.
"Payne's contract was an issue in 2022, but he recorded a career-high 11.5 sacks and earned a four-year extension worth up to $90 million," Keim wrote. "Multiple people in the organization singled him out during OTA work, also saying he appears more relaxed and a little more outgoing."
Allen has been one of the leaders of the Commanders' defense for just under a decade, so losing him is not going to be an easy thing to recover from. But Payne is looking to make that transition as smooth as possible.

The 28-year-old defensive tackle has finished with four sacks each of the last two seasons, but that does not mean that he cannot get to the quarterback. Just a few seasons ago in 2022, Payne had 11.5 sacks, which placed him 12th in the entire NFL at the time.
The Commanders have taken a lot of pride in their defense over the last several seasons, and Payne will be looking to make sure that does not change in 2025.

Where is Tight End U? Event 'debating location' after years in Nashville

Tight End University (TEU) has blossomed into a big-time event since Travis Kelce, George Kittle and Greg Olsen founded it in 2021. The next step for the NFL tight end summit could be to take the show on the road. TEU has been hosted in Nashville since its inception, but Rubicon Talent founder Peter Raskin – whose agency reps Kittle and Olsen and produces Tight End University – acknowledged that could change in the future. "We might look at other cities moving forward," Raskin told Front Office Sports. "We're debating location." Raskin acknowledged TEU could remain in Nashville but the leadership team for the event is "looking at other markets." "We've gotten interest from other cities asking us to bring the event there, and other countries," he said. Raskin did not provide a timetable for such a decision to be made. He also made it clear financial considerations would not make a major impact on the decision. "Every dollar we make goes towards the event, and whatever we don't spend goes to charity," Raskin said, estimating TEU had donated roughly $2.5 million to charity since its founding. "We are not looking to make a profit, so we've turned down more sponsors than we've probably taken on." What TEU is focused on is finding more ways to involve fans in the event. Thus far, the event has mostly been private, with the only publicly available part of it being a country concert to which fans can purchase tickets. WHAT IS TIGHT END U? Taylor Swift makes special appearance at event Raskin said more spectator events "will probably happen" in 2026, regardless of where Tight End University is held.

Eagles had two young stars attend Von Miller's 'Sack Summit' for pass rushers

Over the past two days, Von Miller hosted his annual "Pass Rush Summit" at UNLV, and the Eagles' edge rusher duo was present. Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt are both attending this year's 'Sack Summit' in Las Vegas. 👀Philadelphia's young edge rusher duo is learning from some of the NFL's best like Maxx Crosby and Cam Jordan ahead of training camp. The Eagles suffered several losses in the secondary and defensive line, but managed to improve in the short term, while accumulating potential All-Pro talent in the draft. The first wave of free agency saw Josh Sweat (Cardinals), Milton Williams (Patriots), Kenneth Gainwell (Steelers), Mekhi Becton (Chargers), and Oren Burks (Bengals) all depart. Vic Fangio's defense saw Darius Slay (Steelers), Isaiah Rodgers (Vikings), Avonte Maddox (Lions), and James Bradberry (UFA) all depart a Super Bowl roster. Philadelphia responded to those losses by adding Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari on the edge, adding the duo to a returning group that includes Nolan Smith and second-year outside linebacker Jalyx Hunt. Smith and Hunt have a huge year ahead of them, and recently headed west for advice. Miller debuted his annual 'Von Miller Pass Rush Summit' in 2017 to bring together some of the NFL's best pass rushers to learn from each other through a day of drills, conversation, and film study. As the 36-year-old future Hall of Famer has drawn closer to the end of his career, his focus has shifted to finding the best way to sustain the exchange of information he has created in the future. Miller has rebranded the event as the 'Sack Summit' and brought in Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby and New Orleans Saints defensive end Cam Jordan, who've attended the summit for years as participants, as hosts starting last year. Besides Miller, Jordan, and Crosby, other notable defensive linemen who participated included Brian Burns (New York Giants), Daron Payne (Washington Commanders), Josh Allen (Jacksonville Jaguars), and Matthew Judon. Additionally, Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp has been present in the past.

Israel Adesanya: Charles Oliveira 'gets touched too much,' Ilia Topuria knocks him out

Israel Adesanya is concerned with Charles Oliveira's striking defense against Ilia Topuria. Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) meets Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) for the vacant lightweight title in Saturday's UFC 317 main event (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Oliveira has been knocked down in his title fights against Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje before rallying to get the finish. Adesanya isn't sure "Do Bronx" survives the power of Topuria, who's coming off back-to-back knockouts of Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway. "To beat two of the greatest featherweights of all time, back-to-back, it's hard to doubt a guy like that again," Adesanya said of Topuria on his YouTube channel. "(Oliveira) gets caught too much for my liking, that's the thing. If he wants to go forward straight away, he's going to get caught. I just see Ilia as too sharp with the hands, man. He's too sharp with the hands." Adesanya would like to see Oliveira mix in his grappling to help open up his striking. "Charles needs to feint or just find a way to cause doubt in Ilia's mind, and also good footwork, because I don't think he's going to be moving forward for long," Adesanya said. "He's going to have to move backwards, and when that happens, he has to use good footwork to get back to the center, and then attack from there. "(He needs to) shoot sometimes and then break away. Find a way to disengage, but just get that in his mind. I don't want to doubt Charles because he's illuminated by a great power, and he's just proven himself over and over again. ... Let's see what the grappling is about. Test it, because no one's tested Topuria's grappling quite well yet." The former UFC middleweight champion ultimately picked Topuria to win. "In this fight, I'm going to go Ilia Topuria, and I'm going to go by knockout," Adesanya said. "I don't know what round, but for me it's just because Charles, he gets touched too much for my liking. I just think Ilia will find the shot, I think pretty early if Charles decides to just be aggressive like he says and push forward. And then if he gets hurt, Ilia will find that shot again."
