Jordan is strategic gateway for Brazil's investments in region', says JCC president
AMMAN — President of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Khalil Hajj Tawfiq on Sunday emphasised the importance of positioning the Kingdom as a strategic hub and gateway for Brazilian companies seeking to participate in regional reconstruction projects, particularly in Syria.
Speaking at the Jordanian-Brazilian Economic Forum on Sunday, Hajj Tawfiq highlighted that Jordan is implementing an Economic Modernization Vision, initiated under Royal directives, aimed at building a national economy rooted in growth, sustainability, and improving citizens' quality of life.
He explained that the modernisation vision focuses on several promising sectors, including food industries, pharmaceuticals, garments, energy, trade, mining, tourism and information technology. He affirmed that these sectors offer abundant opportunities that align with investors' ambitions, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The participants of the forum included, business leaders and executives from various economic sectors in both countries, as well as officials from Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the investment promotion agency of São Paulo State.
Hajj Tawfiq described the forum as a "unique" opportunity to explore "promising" investment prospects in Jordan, while also serving as a gateway to the Brazilian market, one of the largest in Latin America and the world, characterised by a "massive" consumer base and "advanced" sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, technology and renewable energy.
President of the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, William Adib Dib Junior, said the launch of the multi-sector delegation to Jordan marks the beginning of a "significant" new Brazilian engagement that reflects the depth of relations based on cooperation and integration.
'This initiative is the fruit of joint cooperation between the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, the Brazilian Embassy in Amman, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and the Invest SP agency of São Paulo State, in collaboration with the Jordan Chamber of Commerce and the Jordanian Ministry of Investment, in addition to the participating Brazilian companies,' Junior said.
He said that trade relations between the two countries have spanned decades, built on strategic integration and mutual support.
Junior added that Brazil plays a "central" role in enhancing food security in Jordan by exporting essential foodstuffs, while Jordan supplies Brazil with fertilisers that support the global competitiveness of its agricultural sector.
He also noted that bilateral trade between the two countries reached about $650 million in 2024.
Brazilian exports increased by 34 per cent, reaching $540 million, the highest figure recorded since 2013, while Jordanian exports to Brazil also achieved "notable" figures, reflecting the growing balance in trade between the two sides, Petra, reported.

Iran says no sanctions relief in US nuclear proposal
Iran's parliament speaker said on Sunday that the latest US proposal for a nuclear deal does not include the lifting of sanctions, state media reported as negotiations appear to have hit a roadblock. The two foes have held five rounds of Omani-mediated talks since April, seeking to replace a landmark agreement between Tehran and world powers that set restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in return for sanctions relief, before US President Donald Trump abandoned the accord during his first term in 2018. In a video aired on Iranian state TV, parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that "the US plan does not even mention the lifting of sanctions". He called it a sign of dishonesty, accusing the Americans of seeking to impose a "unilateral" agreement that Tehran would not accept. "The delusional US president should know better and change his approach if he is really looking for a deal," Ghalibaf said. On May 31, after the fifth round of talks, Iran said it had received "elements" of a US proposal, with officials later taking issue with "ambiguities" in the draft text. The US and its Western allies have long accused the Islamic republic of seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, a charge Iran has consistently denied, insisting that its atomic programme was solely for peaceful purposes. Key issues in the negotiations have been the removal of biting economic sanctions and uranium enrichment. Tehran says it has the right to enrich uranium under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, while the Trump administration has called any Iranian enrichment a "red line". Trump, who has revived his "maximum pressure" campaign of sanction on Iran since taking office in January, has repeatedly said it will not be allowed any uranium enrichment under a potential deal. On Tuesday, Iran's top negotiator, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, said the country "will not ask anyone for permission to continue enriching uranium". According to the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran is the only non-nuclear-weapon state in the world that enriches uranium up to 60 percent -- still short of the 90 percent threshold needed for a nuclear warhead. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday rejected the latest US proposal and said enrichment was "key" to Iran's nuclear programme. The IAEA Board of Governors is scheduled to meet in Vienna later this month and discuss Iran's nuclear activities.

Hajj 2025: UAE leaders congratulate Saudi King on successful season
As the wrapping up of Hajj 2025 season nears, UAE leaders have expressed their congratulations to Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz on the success of organising the pilgrims' journey to the Muslim holy sites. This year, more than 1.6 million Muslims are performing the sacred pilgrimage, with majority of them from outside Saudi Arabia, according to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has sent a message to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to congratulate him on the successful season. Sheikh Mohamed expressed "his sincere congratulations on the success of the Hajj season this year, which was achieved by the grace of Allah the Almighty, and thanks to the generous care of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, his wise government and its institutions, to ensure that pilgrims can perform their rituals in tranquillity and safety". Similar messages were sent by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah, and Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Umm Al Quwain also congratulated the Saudi king on the occasion. After a year that saw fatalities because of heat during Hajj, the kingdom has imposed higher penalties this year for anyone attempting to perform Hajj without a permit, including fines of up to 20,000 Saudi Riyals, arrest, and deportation. The kingdom also suspended short-term visas for 14 countries earlier this year, and security personnel can be seen across holy sites in Makkah.

Dubai traffic to ease: RTA begins road improvements at 40 key locations for summer 2025
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has begun traffic improvements at 40 locations across the emirate, with work scheduled between June and September 2025. The programme covers 22 streets, 9 school zones, more than 5 development areas, and internal roads in Tolerance District, Al Khawaneej 2, and Nad Al Sheba. RTA has timed the work during summer holidays to reduce disruption to traffic flow whilst maintaining safety standards at all sites. RTA launches summer road works across Dubai schools and development areas 'RTA remains committed to enhancing Dubai's road infrastructure to keep pace with the ongoing urban expansion and economic development. These efforts form part of a broader strategy to improve traffic flow, road safety, journey times, and connectivity between residential, educational, and development areas across the city,' the Dubai Media Office (DMO) said in a statement. The next phase includes traffic enhancements at Jumeirah Village Circle towards Hessa Street, Ras Al Khor Road, Al Thanya Street, and King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street. Work will also take place on Al Meydan Street, Al Sa'ada Street, Al Asayel Street, and the junction of Al Wasl Street with Al Manara Street. RTA is undertaking roadworks at nine school zone locations to improve traffic efficiency and road safety around educational institutions. The work includes upgrades at the Al Warqa 1 school complex and construction of a bus entrance at GEMS School in Al Warqa 3. Access and exit points around The English College in Al Safa 1 on Sheikh Zayed Road will be widened, and a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing will be installed on Al Seedaf Street in Al Barsha 1. These measures target congestion during morning and afternoon peak hours. RTA is implementing traffic solutions at five development zones in response to population growth and economic expansion. The authority will construct a direct access route to Al Muhaisnah labour camps from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and upgrade Al Mustaqbal Street (Brookfield) for access to residential communities. Connectivity between Al Khail Road and Al Asayel Street via Al Marabea' Street will be improved, along with enhancements at Nad Al Hamar junction near Lootah Mosque. New parking facilities will serve Zayed Educational Complex in Oud Al Muteena 1. RTA will complete internal roadworks in Tolerance District, Al Khawaneej 2, Jebel Ali Industrial 1, Nad Al Sheba, and Al Warqa.
