Rights Group Writes to Vatican Over Rise in Violence Against Christians in India
New Delhi: Civil society group United Christian Forum has submitted a memorandum highlighting targeted attacks against the Christian community in India to the Vatican, the Hindu reported. The letter was given to Vatican foreign minister Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, who is on a week-long visit to India to meet with church officials in the country. The letter urged the Vatican minister to bring up rising crimes against the minority community during his talks with Indian officials. Gallagher held a meeting with Union external affairs minister S. Jaishankar last week. The Indian minister took to social media after the meeting on Thursday and said that he was pleased to meet the archbishop, adding that they had 'good conversation about the importance of faith, and the need for dialogue and diplomacy to address conflicts'. In January, UCF had released a report which stated that 2024 witnessed 834 hate crimes against Christians, up from 734 such incidents in 2023. In the Modi decade, such crimes had increased from 127 in 2014, the report further said. 'The alarming frequency of attacks translates to more than two Christians being targeted every day in India simply for practising their faith,' UCF had said. In their submission to Gallagher, UCF said that the 'primary reason for these attacks has been false allegations of fraudulent conversions'. According to the report, the highest number of incidents in 2024 were reported from Uttar Pradesh (209), followed by Chhattisgarh (165). In many of these cases, rights activists have pointed out, no First Information Report is filed – sometimes despite there being a police complaint on the matter. In other situations, victims are afraid to approach the police because they believe that the police will try to turn the matter around, and side with the perpetrators while filing false charges against the victims.

PM Modi to visit UK and Maldives, key trade pact and diplomatic reset likely
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the United Kingdom and the Maldives from July 23 to 26 in a high-stakes diplomatic tour focused on advancing bilateral ties and formalising a major free trade agreement (FTA) with Britain. 'During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold wide-ranging discussions with Prime Minister Starmer on the entire gamut of India-UK bilateral relations. They will also exchange views on issues of regional and global importance,' the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement. The centrepiece of the visit on July 23 and 24 is expected to be the formal signing of the India-UK FTA, finalised in May and currently undergoing legal scrubbing by both sides. The landmark deal aims to double bilateral trade, which is currently valued at $60 billion by 2030. It is expected to boost Indian exports of textiles, leather and engineering goods, while slashing tariffs on British whisky, automobiles, and medical devices.

J&K man abducted in Niger terror attack; family appeals to Modi govt for help; Indian embassy works for safe release
NEW DELHI: The family of Ranjit Singh, a senior safety officer from Jammu and Kashmir abducted during a terror attack in Niger's Dosso region, has appealed to the Indian government for urgent intervention to secure his safe return. Singh, a resident of Chakka Kundi village in Ramban district, was working for Transrail, a transmission line company, when he was taken hostage by unidentified armed attackers on July 15. In a tearful interview to ANI, Singh's wife, Sheila Devi, shared her anguish. 'My husband's name is Ranjit Singh. He works in Niger as a senior safety officer in a transmission lightning company called Transrail. On July 15, I tried to contact him, but since then there has been no communication,' she said. She recounted how, after failing to reach him, she contacted his company, only to learn of a terrorist attack at the worksite. Workers had fled into nearby forests to escape the attackers, and Singh was among those who ran. The next day, on July 16, she received confirmation from her husband's colleagues that Singh had been abducted by the attackers. 'I have no idea in what condition my husband is. Singh's mother, Sadhu Devi, is distraught. Family members said she has not eaten or slept since hearing of her son's abduction. The Indian Embassy in Niger confirmed that two other Indians lost their lives in the attack, which took place near an electrical line construction site protected by Nigerien forces. The embassy said it is working with local authorities to repatriate the bodies of the two deceased Indians and to ensure Singh's safe release. The terror attack occurred about 100 km from Niger's capital Niamey. Arab News reported that unidentified armed attackers ambushed a Nigerien army unit providing security at the site. The country faces security threats from jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State, with border regions and sparsely populated areas exploited for terror activities, as noted in the US State Department's 2023 report.
