Erasure's Andy Bell says Blondie's Debbie Harry helped him come out

Bell is best known for being half of the synth‑pop duo Erasure, the group behind the hit songs A Little Respect, Sometimes and Always.
The singer, 61, now shares a song with Harry titled Heart's A Liar which features in his newly released studio album, Ten Crowns.
Bell told PA news agency: 'She was my teenage idol.
'I was smitten. When I saw her on TV, she had the big hair with the light behind the hair, it was like a halo.
'And so I bought a packet of hair bleach and bleached my hair and then went to school proudly with my Blondie t-shirt.
'She kind of helped me come out before I was gay kind of thing so that just stuck with me.
'I was one of those kids that was in their bedroom listening to the music all day.
'I had the record player in my wardrobe to make it sound bigger.'
The singer started his Ten Crowns tour in May 2025 with concerts scheduled across the UK throughout the summer along with performances in Ireland, Denmark and Germany.

Speaking about Harry and new track, Heart's A Liar, Bell added that the song took about a year to be finalised with Harry's vocals.
He said: 'She's a great mentor and her songs are amazing. You know, the way she uses her voice.
'It took about a year for it to come back, but it came back on the same day we were in New York City doing Gay Pride festivals last year, and the vocals arrived on that day. And I just thought, that's such a Debbie thing, you know, where her timing is always divine.
'I never would have believed it when I was a teenager listening to her music. I would never would have believed that I would be on a song with her.
The industry still has 'a way to go' in order for it to be more inclusive, says Bell.
He added: 'I know everybody gets one chance.
'And you can have a huge hit and that's fine but the minute it starts to go askew you're dropped, like completely, it's almost like you're ignored.
'And that would be my advice to young gay people in the industry, is you have to have really thick skin.
'And also, don't believe the hype when you're a success, all the stuff that people are telling you, don't believe it, because it's too ingratiating, and too over the top praise, you need to keep your essence.
'I think people become more damaged, not that their fame is instant, but because you're either so huge, or you're nothing.
'I'm not saying it's an overnight thing, because they work really hard, but it's almost like I want to pre-warn them just in case.'
Erasure, made up of Bell and the musician and songwriter Vince Clarke, won the Brit Award for Best British Group in 1989, and saw multiple number one albums including Wild!, Chorus and I Say I Say I Say.

ITV Love Island 2025 couples in full as Maya Jama kicks off show with fresh twist

Love Island returned to screens tonight for the ITV show's twelfth season with twelve new contestants making their dramatic entrance into the iconic villa. Love Island has made it's highly anticipated return and twelve new contestants have made their dramatic entrance into the vilia tonight with Maya Jama reprising her role as host on the ITV dating show's twelfth series. However, a major twist caught the islanders off guard before they even got a chance to see each other face to face. This year's series kicked off with the girls arriving first, entering in pairs as they grinned with excitement over who and what awaits them under the Spanish sun. But instead of the traditional ceremony where singles step forward for their favourite potential partner, Maya unveiled a fresh twist which threw the first coupling into total chaos just minutes into the show. ‌ The girls were shown six giant red hearts, each of which featured a short dating profile from the boys. The information they were given only stated their name, age, height, job and a cheeky tagline. They then had to make their decision on who to match with based on nothing but their profiles. ‌ One of the profiles said: "I like to play hard and work harder!" Another boasted:"I've got good chat, good vibes, and great teeth." Following some intense conversations, Maya counted down and the girls made their move, sprinting towards the heart they felt the most drawn to. Moments later, the boys made their entrance one by one to discover who they'd been paired with through blind selection. Here are the Love Island 2025 couples so far.. Shakira & Ben Marketing exec Shakira from Burnley declared she was looking for a "tall, charming, witty guy with big arms and a big smile". ‌ She chose Ben Holbrough, a 27-year-old private hire taxi driver who joked his love life was "bankrupt" - but he may be cashing in now. He said he is on the market for a woman with "good chat, good vibes, nice teeth and good eye contact". ‌ Sophie & Harry Motivational speaker Sophie, 29, from Manchester chose to couple up with suave gold trader Harry Cooksley. Harry, 30, is the oldest contestant in the villa so far but with his model credentials and "Surrey Zidane" football finesse, Sophie seems more than content. ‌ Sophie, who branded herself the "CEO of empowerment", is searching for a man who's attentive and funny. Harry, the man of many talents, previously disclosed he actually moonlights as Declan Rice's body double for close-up shoots, but let's see if his personality matches up to his looks. Helena & Conor Cabin crew assistant Helena went for Northern banter and found herself paired up with professional rugby player Conor Philips. ‌ Conor revealed he likes "a dominant woman" with a sense of humour. Meanwhile, Helena values personality and says she can "pretty much laugh herself into bed", so these two may have already met their match. Meg & Dejon Payroll specialist Meg hails from Southampton, bringing business metaphors and bold chat to the villa as she said she aspires to turn her "bankrupt" love life into booming profits. ‌ Meg selected personal trainer and semi-pro footballer Dejon Noel-Williams, having been drawn to his sporty bio and smooth one-liner, and when he stepped out, she definitely did not look disappointed. Dejon, who has rubbed shoulders with the likes of David Beckham, thanks to his famous ex-footballer father, said he was looking for someone confident and real. ‌ Alima & Blu Alima Gagigo from Glasgow is the only Scot in this year's series with the 23-year-old graduate choosing to couple up with construction project manager Blu Chegini, who had a very cheeky backstory. ‌ Blu grew up with a mum who owned a sex shop in Spain, which he has confessed earned him some teasing from pals, who he jokes were unaware that "their parents were buying stuff from there". Blu's confidence and focus on "personality and family" had Alima seemingly intrigued from the get-go. Megan & Tommy Irish musical theatre star and energy broker Megan, who hails from Dublin, was beaming after she chose down-to-earth landscaper Tommy Bradley. ‌ The 24-year-old is known for his tight bond with his boxer brother, Jamie Bradley, and says he is looking for someone with ambition, kindness, and a big personality. Megan, who joked she loves a "bit pasty" lad like Timothée Chalamet, may have found her villa match in sweet-natured Tommy.

Love Island fans forced to do double-take as 'past winner returns'

Love Island viewers were surprised to see a 'familiar face' when tuning in to the twelfth season of the ITV dating show for the premiere tonight, which saw couples pair up with a twist Love Island fans were surprised during the launch episode of the new series after one Islander's entrance sparked déjà vu, convincing viewers that a former winner had made a shock return. As the boys were introduced in Monday night's premiere, viewers couldn't help but compare new arrival Harry Cooksley to Love Island: All Stars winner Tom Clare. The resemblance was so striking that one fan tweeted: "Is the first one not pink jacket Tom?" Another gasped: "HARRY'S TOM'S DOUBLE!!" Others became suspicious that the wool was being pulled over their eyes by the former cast member, with one suggesting: "Tom really thinks he can trick us by re-entering the villa under 'Harry'. This has Casey's idea written all over it." ‌ ‌ Someone else agreed, adding: "Tom sneaked in and thought we wouldn't notice." However, the man in question is in fact Harry, a 30-year-old from Guildford who is the oldest member of the original 2025 cast. While he might look like Tom's long-lost twin, he is actually a newcomer to the villa. In the real world, Harry splits his time between playing football for Farnham Town, working in gold trading, and picking up modelling gigs on the side. He even boasts a surprising claim to fame involving England star Declan Rice. Before going on the ITV show, he revealed: "When Declan Rice does a shoot, any body close-ups will actually be me. You'll never see my face, but you'll see my shoulder or chest, that kind of thing." Harry was selected by motivational speaker Sophie Lee, who has been advocating for burn victims ever since she nearly lost her life during a terrible fire-breathing accident in 2019. She was performing in Chicago when an air conditioning unit blew a fireball back into her face and she had to be rushed to the hospital after being in so much pain that she blacked out. ‌ Speaking about that difficult time, Sophie shared: "I couldn't breathe by yourself, I couldn't eat, I couldn't really see, it was scary." However, she has also told "I refuse to let [the accident] define me." Meanwhile Tom Clare, who won the All Stars edition earlier this year alongside girlfriend Molly Smith, is now back in pre-season training with his club Macclesfield. He is also still very much in love with Molly. The couple recently returned from a romantic break in the Maldives, where they enjoyed a private dinner under the stars and some much-needed downtime. Although fans have been speculating that a proposal is on the cards, Tom told The Mirror that he is in no rush. He said: "I want to spend the rest of my life with Molly, but there's no pressure in our time or anyone else's." The pair continue to support each other through their respective careers, with Molly often cheering Tom on at his matches, while Tom pops by her photoshoots. "We kind of make the effort," she said, with Tom adding that they're "very similar" and just "banter with one another".

Tiny meerkat pups find their feet in Scottish safari park

The four pups at Blairdrummond Safari Park were born on May 10 to parents Cardi B and Biggie. New photos show the pups scampering about their enclosure at the park, exploring their surroundings. (Image: PA) READ NEXT:Rachel Reeves reveals changes to Winter Fuel Payments this year Staff at the park say they are settling in and starting to "show a bit of character" in their home at the park. It is the third litter for the pair since they joined the park in 2022. Meerkat pups are born blind, deaf and almost hairless but keepers said that now, aged around one month, the animals have opened their eyes and begun exploring the outside world. (Image: PA) Meerkats are described as incredibly social animals and live in tight-knit groups known as mobs which work together to raise their young. (Image: PA) (Image: PA) (Image: PA) Carolyn Booth, Pets Farm Team Leader at Blair Drummond, said: "The pups are just starting to find their feet and show a bit of character - it's a brilliant stage to watch. "They're getting more confident by the day, and the rest of the mob has really stepped up to help raise them. It's a real family effort." The pups have now started nibbling on bits of solid food and spend time following the adults around and practising their digging skills."
