Commission extends application deadline to July 21 ‘after tech issues'

Kolkata: The West Bengal School Service Commission on Sunday extended the application deadline for the fresh selection test to July 21. Candidates from the 2016 recruitment panel have begun applying for the fresh test and the number of applicants has started increasing following the court order barring tainted candidates from appearing for the exam.
A notice by the commission stated that due to some technical issues, the date has been extended. Earlier, it was supposed to close on Monday.
An official confirmed that around 500 applications have come from eligible teachers from the 2016 recruitment panel so far, which saw a sharp surge from Sunday morning. "Initially, very few applications had been received from candidates on the 2016 recruitment panel. However, the numbers started rising today.
Many who were earlier reluctant to appear for the exam have changed their minds after the HC order," said a WBSSC official.

Following multiple writ petitions after the WBSSC issued its recruitment notification, the court directed the commission to cancel applications from "tainted candidates" for the fresh examination to recruit assistant teachers in state-aided schools for 35,726 vacancies.
Sources said around 800 applications had been received from those who were identified as "specifically tainted".

WBSSC had earlier submitted a list of "specifically tainted candidates" comprising 185 assistant teachers for classes IX-X and 38 teachers for classes XI-XII. Additionally, 1,580 assistant teachers were identified who had OMR issues.
Mehebub Mandal, a prominent face of the protest movement, said: "Now, after the HC order, teachers, including myself, from our forum have started filling forms through the online portal."
A woman who used to teach at a school in Murshidabad said, "It's a relief that the tainted candidates won't be there, but now we have to compete with younger better-prepared candidates."

Jaipur: Chain snatchers in the city are growing audacious, with two women targeted in broad daylight—one in an upscale locality and the other at Sindhi Camp bus stand—on the same day. In the first incident, a woman fell victim to chain snatching on a moving bus. According to DCP (west) Hanuman Prasad Meena, Diksha Prajapati reported that she was boarding a bus from Sindhi Camp to Bayana around 3.30pm Tuesday when a woman passenger forcibly snatched the gold chain from her neck. When Diksha resisted, the woman threatened her with a weapon resembling a screwdriver and fled. In another incident, Sushila Devi (65), a resident of Shanti Nagar in Durgapura, was attacked near her home while returning from a Jain temple. The incident took place around 7.45pm on a busy stretch in one of the city's upscale localities. Two men on a motorcycle approached her just 200 metres from her house. Cyber fraud racket worth Rs 5cr busted in city, 4 held
Jaipur: The police Wednesday busted a cyber fraud racket worth Rs 5 crore operating in the city and arrested four members of the gang linked to an international network. DCP (South) Rajashi Raj Varma told TOI that the gang supplied bank accounts to online scammers, with funds routed all the way to China. "Acting on a tip-off, a police team from Shyam Nagar police station raided a flat near Kamla Nehru Bridge and seized Rs 7.7 lakh, 28 ATM cards, 23 chequebooks, 10 mobile SIMs, and forged rental agreements used to legitimise fake firms," he said. Varma said that key accused, Sunil Jakhar, allegedly used the front of a shell company to launder money from online scams. Jakhar converted the fraud money into cryptocurrency (USDT) and relayed it to Chinese handlers. "The gang leased out bank accounts across Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Villagers were lured with Rs 10,000–30,000 a month to rent out accounts, hand over signed cheques, ATM cards, and SIMs linked to the accounts. The gang withdrew the laundered cash and sent crypto codes to China in return for commissions," Varma said. The gang is also suspected of frequently changing flats every one to two months to avoid detection.
