3 soldiers killed after Army vehicle plunges into 700-foot-deep gorge in J&K's Ramban
The accident took place around 11.30 am near Battery Chashma when the Army truck, part of a convoy heading from Jammu to Srinagar along National Highway 44, lost control.
A joint rescue effort involving the Army, police, SDRF, and local volunteers was launched immediately. All three soldiers inside the vehicle were found dead at the scene, the report added.
The deceased have been identified as Sepoys Amit Kumar, Sujeet Kumar, and Man Bahadur. Their bodies are being recovered from the gorge.
Officials cited in the report said that the impact of the crash left the vehicle completely mangled.

In a similar incident reported in March, two people were killed after a load carrier transporting fresh vegetables skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Ramban district, according to a police officer quoted by PTI.
The victims, driver Arshid Ahmad and his helper Seva Singh—both around 30 years old—were returning to their village, Ukhral Pogal-Paristan, when the accident occurred near Battery Cheshma along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.
A joint rescue operation involving the police and local volunteers was launched, and the bodies were recovered from the gorge, which was several hundred feet deep, the officer said.
In a separate incident that also occurred in March, four people were killed and eight others injured after the vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in the Reasi district, officials said.
The accident happened in the Gangode area when the driver reportedly lost control of the tempo traveller, causing it to plunge into the gorge.
Rescue teams from the local police and SDRF reached the spot promptly to assist. Three people died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital. The eight injured passengers were admitted to the hospital for treatment.

In a tragic incident, atleast eight women were killed and 25 people injured while they were on their way to a temple in Pune when a pick-up van they were travelling in fell off the road on a hilly terrain on Monday, PTI quoted Pimpri Chinchwad police as saying. The report added that the driver of the pick-up van lost control. The van was carrying 30 to 35 passengers, most of them women and children, veered off the road, and plunged 25 to 30 feet into the gorge. "There were 30 to 35 passengers, mostly women and children, in the pick-up van. The vehicle plunged 25 to 30 feet down the road after the driver lost control of the wheels at Pait village," PTI quoted an official from Pimpri Chinchwad police as saying. Following the accident, locals rushed to the spot and alerted the police.10 ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. Police added that eight women have died in the accident, and around 25 others sustained injuries. Expressing grief over the tragedy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced compensation of ₹ 4 lakh each to the kin of the deceased persons. "A tragic incident has taken place in which seven people died after a pick-up van met with an accident. I offer my condolences to the families of the deceased. ₹ 4 lakh aid will be given to the next of kin of the deceased," he stated in a post on X.

Mumbai, Aug 11 (PTI) The existence of urban Naxals cannot be denied, a senior Mumbai Police officer said on Monday, adding that they are being monitored. Police teams maintain a strict vigil and take appropriate action. Police are alert and monitoring movements of urban naxals, the officer said, adding that he cannot divulge details of action. The state legislature passed the Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, 2024, in the monsoon session. The bill seeks to prevent unlawful activities of Left Wing Extremist organisations with a focus on urban Naxalism and 'passive militancy". The stringent provisions of the legislation, including hefty fines and a jail term up to seven years, have sparked criticism from civil society groups and opposition parties, who view it as a tool to suppress dissent under the pretext of national security. During an informal interaction with journalists, the police officer said terrorism is the biggest challenge being tackled by the Mumbai Police on priority, followed by the safety of women and children, narcotics and cybercrime. When asked if urban Naxals are in Mumbai, the officer said that the word 'urban" is self-explanatory. 'Police monitor them and take appropriate action. We are alert and keeping vigil on their every movement," he added. Addressing cybercrime and explaining measures to tackle the growing menace, the officer said Mumbai Police's cyber helpline number 1930 receives over 2000 calls every day about online cheating. 'After registering complaints, police daily freeze over Rs 60 lakh lost by victims within 15 to 20 minutes of the incident," he said. Emphasising the importance of a short window in reporting online frauds, he appealed to citizens to immediately dial the helpline number so that police can block the transfer of hard-earned money from falling into hands of fraudsters. 'If victims fail to inform police immediately, fraudsters withdraw money by transferring it to various accounts," he said. Addressing the issue of illegal immigrants settling in Mumbai, the officer stated that action has been taken against more than 1,000 illegal Bangladeshi nationals, and they have been deported. UP man falls from bridge, clings to tree for 22hrs before rescue
Bareilly: A 25-year-old man who fell from a bridge and was swept away by the swollen Ramganga river to a flooded forested area near Maithra village of Moradabad district on Saturday night managed to somehow grab a branch of Eucalyptus tree and spent nearly 22 hours on it before being rescued around 7pm on Sunday. Satpal Kumar, a daily-wager from Maithra, was on his way to his grandma's house on Saturday evening when he slipped and fell while crossing the Ramganga bridge around 9pm. He was swept away for nearly 1.5-km downstream when the "tree saved his life". "It was a very frightening experience. It was pitch dark at night. The place was flooded and the water below was cold. It was a secluded area away from local settlements. I was terrified and shivering -- both hungry and thirsty. It was raining too. My clothes were already wet. There was nothing I could eat... I survived on rain water," Satpal said of his ordeal. Satpal added that before his phone went off on Saturday night, he managed to luckily inform his brother Veerpal of his plight. With his phone "dead", an SDRF team along with local police located him after a three-hour search operation. He was weak and quite traumatised, police said on Monday. Notably, parts of Moradabad have been struck by floods this monsoon. "By Sunday morning, there was still no trace of Satpal," said Veerpal. "Fearing the worst, we approached Dalpatpur police station. Station in-charge Dharmendra Kumar informed his seniors and initiated efforts to trace him. Police obtained the CDR of Satpal's mobile number, which revealed his location." SSP Satpal Antil added: "Five teams were set up to rescue Satpal." Still coming to terms with the frightening experience, Satpal said, "Throughout the night, I clung on to the tree's branches for dear life, at times struggling to keep balance...
