MSU target, PG Carlos Medlock Jr. is becoming one of fastest risers on recruiting trail
A prospect Michigan State basketball identified early in the recruiting process is becoming one of the fastest risers this summer. Carlos Medlock Jr. of Branson, Mo. picked up an offer from the Spartans in mid-June and has quickly risen up the recruiting boards with strong summer play on the circuits. Medlock -- who is originally from Michigan but recently transferred to Link Academy in Missouri -- shot up the recruiting rankings recently, now sitting as a four-star prospect. When Michigan State offered him last month, Medlock was a three-star prospect. Medlock now ranks as the No. 9 point guard and No. 104 player in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2026 class. For some perspective, on June 16 when he picked up his Spartans offer, he ranked as the No. 26 point guard in the class. Michigan State was Medlock's first power conference offer, with Michigan and Oklahoma State following the Spartans' suit since then, per 247Sports. It should come as no surprise that Tom Izzo and his staff was able to identify a top talent before others did, and hopefully that will give Michigan State an edge in this now heated battle for a premier talent in the 2026 class. Michigan State is one of a few Big Ten schools with top 25 QB commitment in 2026 class
Michigan State is one of only a few Big Ten teams that currently holds a commitment from a top 25 quarterback prospect in the 2026 class. All of the Rivals' top 25 quarterback prospects in the 2026 class are now committed, and Michigan State is fortunate enough to have one of the commits in Kayd Coffman. He ranks as the No. 23 quarterback in the Rivals Industry Rankings for the 2026 class, which is fifth among Big Ten commitments in the position. Coffman has been committed to Michigan State since early February and ranks as one of the top commitments in the Spartans' 2026 class. On rivals, he is listed as a four-star prospect and ranked as the No. 6 player from Michigan and No. 237 overall prospect in the class. Coffman has long been considered a centerpiece of the Spartans' 2026 class so it's no surprise to see him among the top 25 quarterbacks in the class. Should Michigan State hold onto his commitment throughout this fall and sign him in December, he will surely be a big part of the Spartans' future on the gridiron. Izzo names 3 previous teams capable of winning national championship but came up short
Something I often find myself wondering about during the offseason is which of Tom Izzo's many dominant teams were good enough to win a national championship but came up short. And it turns out, this is something Izzo has also thought about before. Izzo recently sat down with Rick Pizzo of the Big Ten Network to discuss a number of topics surrounding his Spartans program and his own career. One of the items he discussed was the teams he thought were capable of winning a national championship but came up short. Can you guess which three teams he named? Here's the list from the man who led those teams: It's painful to think about how each of those seasons came to an end, but I unfortunately have to agree with Izzo on each of those teams being capable of winning it all. I would also add the 2018-19 team that lost to Texas Tech in the Final Four as I would have liked the Spartans chances against Virginia in the title game had they beaten the Red Raiders. Izzo, of course, has won one national championship during his career in 2000, and has been chasing his second title ever since. He has came close on numerous occasions, including this past year when the Spartans reached the Elite Eight. Hopefully, before Izzo elects to hang it up, he'll reach that pinnacle again and claim one more national championship at Michigan State. Check out the whole clip of Izzo talking about these teams, as well as some other interesting notes from his interview with Pizzo in the video below: Contact/Follow us @The SpartansWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Michigan State news, notes and opinion.
