Nothing beats Bob Mortimer! The irresistible comedy that could just save Amazon

The Guardian31-03-2025
As you can probably tell by spending any time on it, Amazon Prime Video is in trouble. Citadel, its $300m Russo brothers-produced international spy thriller series, was met with widespread indifference. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a show that will end up costing Amazon a billion dollars, is destined to go down as one of the worst investments of all time. Everywhere you look, the platform is wall-to-wall duds.
And yet there is one glimmer of hope. The sole scrap of buzz Amazon has generated in months comes in the form of a cheap little reality show. Last One Laughing UK has been all over social media for the last couple of weeks, clipped up and shared across TikTok, Instagram and X. And this is down to its deceptively simple premise: a bunch of comedians sit in a room together and try to make each other laugh. If they laugh, they're out. That's all there is to it.
Last One Laughing UK has summoned some genuinely funny people for the show, among them Richard Ayoade, Bob Mortimer, Lou Sanders, Daisy May Cooper and Joe Wilkinson. You can see why they were so eager to sign up, too, because the show is about as low stakes as you can get. It follows the loose Big Brother format, where everyone has to share a common area. But the entire show only represents a six-hour commitment for them. They made multiple episodes of television in less time than it takes to watch The Brutalist twice. Even ignoring the quality of the final product, that's an extremely efficient way to go about business.
The show presents the contestants with a chance to recycle some of their old material. Most of the viral clips have revolved around Bob Mortimer, who performed a magic act first seen on The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer 30 years ago and sang some songs he posted on social media during Covid. The fact that these routines not only found new life on LOL UK, but also pushed his fellow contestants to the brink, is testament to Mortimer's talent.
But Mortimer isn't solely responsible for the LOL UK highlight reel. Richard Ayoade's shockingly aggressive pursuit of laughs was another standout moment. Joe Wilkinson's bizarre little Stars in their Eyes sequence was punishingly funny, as was the surprise appearance of Danny Dyer.
There's also something really irresistible in watching people trying their hardest to quell a response as involuntary as laughter. Daisy May Cooper's attempt to shut herself down, which involved screwing up her face like she was trying not to breathe in a fart, is funny in itself. Judi Love often looked like a woman who'd swallowed a live grenade. Harriet Kemsley, who may well be the breakout contestant of the whole show, at one point looked as if she was having a nervous breakdown trying to stop a laugh from leaking out. It's weirdly thrilling to watch something as mundane as a cracking poker face.
In truth, the UK is late to the LOL game. Like almost every other successful reality show, from Big Brother to The Traitors, Last One Laughing is a foreign format that circled the globe before arriving here – in this case, it's based on a Japanese show called Documental that first aired in 2016. Since then, versions have sprung up in 27 different countries, from Albania to Indonesia. Trevor Noah hosted the South African version, Graham Norton hosted Ireland's and Rebel Wilson hosted Australia's. For us, it's Jimmy Carr. There is an argument that LOL UK's success hinges less on the British sense of humour than a watertight format. After all, if it works in Russia – where it aired in 2023 – you suspect it can work anywhere.
Last One Laughing UK has been compared to Taskmaster, but that isn't entirely fair. Taskmaster is an intricately assembled series that rewards lateral thinking, whereas this is essentially just people sitting around for a few hours. But it is nevertheless very funny. More importantly – unlike most Amazon shows – people are actually talking about it. It must be strange being an Amazon executive this week. You spent all that money on Lord of the Rings, but it turns out that people far prefer the sight of Bob Mortimer sitting on a squeaky chair. What a world.
Last One Laughing UK is on Prime Video now.

Justin Bieber impersonator 'banned from Vegas nightclub' after tricking DJ into performing

A DJ in Las Vegas was tricked into letting a Justin Bieber impersonator perform Sorry live after being duped into thinking he was the Canadian hitmaker A Justin Bieber impersonator has been banned from a Las Vegas hotel after successfully convincing an entire nightclub that he was the Canadian pop star. ‌ The incident took place on Saturday, August 16, at XS Nightclub, where 29-year-old Frenchman Dylan Desclos posed as Bieber. Reports state that Desclos not only gained access to VIP areas but also ran up a $10,000 bar bill before joining DJ Gryffin on stage for a surprise performance. ‌ At the time, many believed they were witnessing Bieber's return to live music following the release of his seventh studio album Swag. The lead single Daisies has been a Top 10 hit in the UK, which added credibility to the idea that the star was making a promotional appearance. ‌ DJ Gryffin, whose real name is Daniel Griffith, later shared his perspective of the incident on TikTok. The 37-year-old admitted that the dark setting and loud music made it difficult to realise the person who approached him was not actually Bieber. Gryffin wrote: "So his 'team' said he wanted to perform 'Sorry'… little did I know I was about to be sorry." The clip, which has since gone viral, shows the DJ smiling after the performance and telling the crowd: "That was insane. That was actually insane." ‌ Shortly afterwards, a friend informed him that the man he had invited on stage was not Justin Bieber. Gryffin appeared visibly shocked, responding: "There's no way." In a follow-up, the DJ admitted he briefly questioned the man's appearance, saying: "I literally thought like, 'damn, he's put on a lot of weight since the album dropped!'" The man who went up on stage was later identified as Dylan Desclos, a French national who has gained attention online for his repeated impersonations of Bieber. ‌ He is known to some as Bustin Jieber, and has staged mock tours, shared viral clips from public transport, and once even met Hailey Bieber, who admitted she was unsettled by his resemblance to her husband. After his Las Vegas stunt XS Nightclub confirmed that Desclos had been banned from the venue. Social media users have been debating over whether his actions constituted identity theft or if the incident was simply an elaborate prank. One viewer wrote: "It's alarming how easily he was able to prank everyone. The fact that a random guy made it to the stage is impressive. " ‌ Meanwhile, another protested: "I'm so lost on this is this not illegal?? I'm pretty sure this is a form of like fraud or identity theft??" The incident comes after the real Justin Bieber sparked concern from fans when he posted a series of near-nude photos of himself in see-through Calvin Klein boxers after a dip in a lake. Some people questioned his online behaviour, with one commenting: "Hailey come get your husband," while another wrote: "What is he doing? He is a married father acting like a teenager on a camping trip with his high school friends."

James Bond frontrunner rules himself out of top role saying ‘I should not be playing 007'

A JAMES Bond favourite has taken himself out of the running after believing he's 'not the right person' for the role. Ever since Daniel Craig said goodbye to the role in 2021 release No Time To Die, the role of super spy 007 has been up for grabs, with speculation rife over who should take over. 4 Over time, bookies have placed their bets on a string of Hollywood A-listers to take on the role, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Idris Elba and Henry Cavill. With Amazon acquiring the 007 franchise from the Broccoli family, this was then extended to American stars including Patrick Schwarzenegger, Timothée Chalamet and Jacob Elordi. But one emerging favourite – Top Gun 2 and Anyone But You star Glen Powell – has shut down speculation he could take his martini shaken, not stirred. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Glenn said simply: 'I'm a Texan. My family and I joke around, I can play Jimmy Bond, but I should not be playing James Bond. 'Get an authentic Brit for that job. That's who belongs in that tuxedo.' In the 63 years James Bond has been on screen, seven actors have played the character – all of whom white men from the UK and Ireland. Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig have portrayed the spy in the film series, with David Niven taking on the role in a non-official adaptation in 1967. Debate has since spread over whether the franchise should deviate from tradition when it comes to the character, with James Bond and 007 code names that can be taken on by anyone. At one stage, Gillian Anderson was being considered as the first female Bond, while Idris Elba has held firm as a favourite to become the first Black star to portray the spy. However, some actors have noted they don't want to play such an iconic character, as doing so would mean that they could be defined as 'Bond' for the rest of their career. Entire Bond collection of 25 films coming to hit TV app The White Lotus star Theo James previously ruled himself out for that reason, telling The Guardian in 2024: 'I do think there are better people for that job. 'And, honestly, it would be terrifying: if you do that, there's no going back. You're opening Pandora's box there.' The new favourite for the role is relative unknown actor James Nelson-Joyce, who played James 'Yatesy' Yates in BBC drama, Little Boy Blue, and Michael Kavanaugh in the gangster drama, This City is Ours. 4 4

I moved from a ‘rough' council estate to a mansion but my neighbour was vile to me for being too common

Plus, how the entrepreneur went from being a single mother living in a council house to raking in a whopping £1.8million a year CRUEL COMMENTS I moved from a 'rough' council estate to a mansion but my neighbour was vile to me for being too common Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A WOMAN who previously lived on a rough council estate and moved to a 'posh area' has said her 'vile' neighbour was rude to her for being too common. Terri-Ann Nunns, 41, from Doncaster, who previously starred on Channel 5's Rich House, Poor House as a self-made millionaire, said she was 'happier' on the council estate. 3 Self-made millionaire Terri-Ann Nunns opened up about moving from a council estate to a mansion - and how her posh neighbour was vile to her Credit: Tiktok/terriann_nunns 3 Terri Ann claims her neighbour's actions forced her to move house Credit: Instagram/TerriAnn_Nunns After creating a successful diet plan and having a budget of £1,200 a week with her husband Michael, and their three kids, Terri-Ann moved into her 'dream' mansion. However, things were not all rosy as the person living next to her made her life a living hell. The six-bedroom mansion had come with a cinema room and a swanky bar, but the dream ended when she was forced to sell the property and move out. In a TikTok video on her @terriann_nunns account, she said: 'We bought this house, and then I had offices built in the back garden, it was just amazing. 'But then I had a new neighbor and he were a doctor and he weren't very nice. 'I think personally he could not stand the fact, like, I'm just me. I'm not posh, I'm just me. 'I'll never change, I've always been from a council estate, always been rough and ready, professional, but can be rough and ready as well. And he just couldn't stand us.' Terri-Ann claims tensions rose when he started moaning about her staff parking on the street. She added: 'I had a massive drive for everybody to park on, every staff member, but because they're coming at different times, one of them would get blocked in. 'So they just thought, 'we'll park on street.' So one of my staff argued with him. Anne and Mick Ross look around the Nunn's six-bed house on Rich House Poor House 'He nudged her, it was vile. 'Honestly, I just think he just couldn't stand the fact that we weren't posh. We were just, like, normal.' Terri-Ann said she suspects her neighbour ended up phoning the council to say she was running a commercial business out of her home. She continued: 'I don't know, he just hated us. 'And then when the council got involved, basically the reason I had to move out the house because they said I couldn't run my business from there. 'So I'd spent £40,000 on this office being built in the back garden, and the council turned around and said you're using your property as a commercial property which we weren't. 'We had the big house and the thing at the back garden. Anyway, I said I'm not staying here. 'I'm not staying here and not being able to run my business. It's just not worth it, what we've invested. 'So we sold the house, made money from it, sold the house and bought the one that's on Rich House, Poor House.' 3 The Nunns outside their six-bedroom mansion on Rich House, Poor House Credit: Emporium Productions Ltd SNOBBY COMMENTS Terri-Ann insists she's proud of her success, but claims often people who have had a privileged upbringing 'look down' on those who haven't had that. Many people were quick to praise the entrepreneur on her success in the comments. One said: 'Girl I feel you, I miss the estate so bad! Way to snooty round here.' Another added: 'Love to see my own kind of people getting along in life good on you. sounds like the neighbour was very bitter and jealous of you.' BUSINESS SUCCESS Terri-Ann made her fortune through her Terri-Ann New You Plan, and regularly shares her top tricks for her own drastic body transformation. She went from being a single mother living in a council house to raking in a whopping £1.8million a year. On her Rich House, Poor House episode, her family swapped their six-bedroom home with struggling Anne and Mick Ross, who lived off £200 a week. During the episode, Terri-Ann admitted she may have been happier in her life before her success, saying: 'We're probably less happy now. 'I have to work loads of hours, and neglect Michael (her husband) a little bit, and obviously it's clear I neglect my kids because they told me all this week.'
