Rafizi, Nik Nazmi's resignations won't hinder progress of NESP, says Deputy Economy Minister
KUALA LUMPUR (June 5): The resignations of two key ministers will not disrupt the progress of the National Environmental, Social and Governance Strategic Plan (NESP) or the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), both of which are nearing completion, said Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib.
To a question on the progress of NESP and 13MP, Hanifah Hajar confirmed that the 13MP is almost ready to be presented to the Cabinet, while work on the NESP is actively ongoing.
'All ministries understand the importance of ESG (environmental, social and governance), and our civil servants have been working on it with clear ideas they want to implement,' she told reporters on the sidelines of the Forward Faster Symposium 2025 hosted by the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB) here today.
It was reported that the 13MP document is expected to be tabled in Parliament next month.
However, she noted that a definitive timeline for the delivery of the NESP has yet to be confirmed.
This follows the resignation of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli as Minister of Economy and the resignation of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, which will take effect on July 4.
Earlier in her keynote address at the symposium, Hanifah Hajar said the NESP is aligned with global ESG frameworks and complements six pillars under the National Sustainability Strategic Framework and Industry ESG.
'The NESP is a comprehensive initiative aimed at guiding Malaysian businesses toward ESG compliance and sustainable practices. It will support Malaysian business entities, especially small and medium enterprises in phases, to move toward ESG reporting and even beyond compliance,' she said.
The one-day symposium brought together over 200 participants, including high-level executives, sustainability practitioners, and business leaders.
With the theme 'Accelerating Corporate Sustainability Commitments for a Resilient Future,' the event featured in-depth discussions and high-level dialogues on the evolving role of business in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The discussions were seen as timely amid economic headwinds and rising geopolitical tensions, with Malaysian corporate leaders increasingly strengthening their ESG commitments and positioning sustainability as a strategic tool to manage risk, drive long-term value, and contribute to national development. – Bernama

Tabung Haji Rejects Claim Of RM20 Million Spent On Rebranding
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has rejected as false and defamatory allegations that it spent RM20 million on rebranding. In a statement, TH clarified that the actual cost for the brand rejuvenation process was RM2 million per year over a three-year period. 'Efforts to strengthen the brand have been carried out several times as an important investment to change mindsets and attract Muslims to save systematically in order to meet the requirements for performing the haj,' it said. TH said the rebranding process also involved market surveys and engagement with depositors to better understand their needs while taking into account demographic shifts within the Muslim community in Malaysia. 'The claim that TH need not strengthen its well-known brand after 60 years of operation is also inaccurate,' according to the statement. To date, TH has 9.6 million depositors, representing about half of the country's Muslim population. According to TH, more than 53 per cent of depositors had savings of less than RM1,300, far below the estimated RM15,000 required for a pilgrim from the B40 group to perform the haj in 2025. 'Over 80 per cent of depositors' financial transactions are carried out online. Therefore, TH plans to launch a campaign to encourage Muslims to save early, consistently and systematically to build sufficient savings, while ensuring stable investments for the institution's sustainability,' the statement said. TH also said its Board of Directors had decided to review the agency's strategy to remain competitive, provide better services and attract more young Muslims as depositors.

Cambodia-Thailand regional border talks end smoothly

The Cambodian Ministry of National Defence, during its media briefing on Saturday (Aug 16), said that the situation in Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey and Banteay Meanchey provinces was normal. Ministry's spokesperson Lt Gen Maly Socheata said the Regional Boundary Commission (RBC) meeting between both countries, held in Thailand's Trat province on Friday, had made some progress, but no further details were disclosed. 'The meeting hopes to achieve more positive results that allow both sides to push for a fully effective ceasefire that brings peace, stability and normalcy,' said Maly. During the briefing, she also said that the Asean Interim Observers Team (IOT), led by Malaysia's Defence Attaché to Cambodia Col Nazlee Abdul Rahim, concluded their two-day mission to check security along the border areas. Other Asean member states - Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam - are part of the observer team. The team inspected border checkpoints in Banteay Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces. Cambodia and Thailand are striving to maintain and bolster the ceasefire deal that was achieved on July 28 in Malaysia, after a border dispute led to a five-day armed conflict in northern Cambodia. The intervention of Malaysia, as Asean chair, and the United States and China as observers managed to bring the hostile situation under control. Govt considers stronger laws to tackle bullying cases in Malaysia
KUCHING: The government is prepared to review existing laws to better address bullying cases, according to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. She clarified that while amending laws falls outside her ministry's jurisdiction, she is ready to engage with relevant authorities. 'There may not be a need to enact a new law, but recent bullying cases could inspire improvements to current legislation,' she told reporters after attending the Gempak Inspirasi @ Sepagi Bersama PPWS 2025 Programme. Nancy confirmed the issue will be raised in the upcoming Cabinet meeting. Her remarks follow calls from the Anti-Bullying Act Movement (GAB) for a dedicated law to comprehensively tackle bullying. GAB Secretariat chairman Wan Azliana Wan Adnan previously stated that drafting for the proposed act began in 2022 but has seen little progress. Nancy noted that existing laws, including the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025 and Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) Act 2025, already cover bullying.
