Family win HUGE £216million Euromillions jackpot making national history

Daily Mirror16-07-2025
A family from Cork, Ireland, won the biggest EuroMillions jackpot their country has ever seen, with members vowing to 'stay grounded' following the lifechanging experience
A family has won one of the biggest-ever lottery draws in Euromillions history, scooping nearly a quarter-of-a-billion pounds in an instant this week.

Members of the family syndicate, from Cork, Ireland, were left in shock after they found out they won the €250 million (£216 million) EuroMillions Jackpot, the largest in Irish history. Speaking after the incredible win, the stunned group have promised to keep eating ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch despite being left shocked by the "surreal" experience.

Members of the syndicate, who have chosen to remain anonymous, have spoken about the incredible moment they made Irish history.

Speaking to the National Lottery, one family member said they had stopped by a shop while running errands when they saw "a sign at the till" saying the massive jackpot had been won.
They said they initially hadn't thought anything of the notice, but decided to check their numbers anyway. They said: "I saw the sign at the till that the EuroMillions jackpot was €250 million.

"Although I'm a regular player, I hadn't bought a ticket for the last two draws. I picked one up and honestly, didn't think much of it.'
They didn't discover they were the winners until they tuned into the nine o'clock news and checked the National Lottery app, finding they had "won big".
They called the National Lottery the following morning after a sleepless night of exciting, and, after a "few minutes" that "felt like the longest of my life", they were confirmed as the official winners.

They kept their win carefully hidden inside an A4 sheet beneath a pile of folded laundry in the bedroom until they claimed the prize days later.
Aside from a holiday, they plan to spend the money on family and charities. And, while one member joked they could now buy a coveted Rolex, they have vowed not to change their lives much.
They said: "We're absolutely going on a family holiday. We love to travel and there's so many amazing trips we've always dreamed of that we can now make a reality.
"We're already looking at holiday homes somewhere in the sun. We also feel incredibly fortunate now to be in a position where we can buy homes for our children too.'
One syndicate member said: "We're planning to remain in Ireland, and we promised ourselves that we won't let this win change us." Another member added with a laugh: "I'll still be having my favourite ham and cheese sambo for lunch every day!'

Cineworld to be kicked out of world's tallest cinema

Cineworld is to be kicked out of the world's tallest cinema complex. The building on Renfrew Street in Glasgow has been operated by Cineworld since it takeover from UGC in 2005. Cineworld has confirmed that the landlord intends to take back the site and employees impacted have been informed. The new owner purchased the site for £7m in May this year. Cineworld has been leasing the building for more than £1m a year, according to title documents seen by STV News. Clydebankbridge Ltd is owned by Omniplex, an Irish cinema group that took over five Empire sites in 2023 – including the one in Clydebank. The lease on the building was due to run until 2036 – but it appears the new owner is seeking to end this prematurely. Omniplex has been contacted for comment. A Cineworld spokesperson said: 'We are aware of the landlord's intention to take back the site at Cineworld Glasgow Renfrew Street. 'We have communicated to and are working closely with our employees that may be impacted. At this stage, we do not have further information to share.' Opened in September 2021, the UGC Cinema stands at 62m tall, has 18 screens across 12 storeys and can seat more than 4,200 people. It was taken over and rebranded by Cineworld in 2005. After entering administration in 2023, Cineworld announced the closure of six cinemas in a major company restructure. It closed sites at Glasgow Parkhead, Bedford, Hinckley, Loughborough, Yate and Swindon Circus. Cineworld operates eight cinemas in Scotland with three locations in Glasgow, two in Aberdeen and sites in Dundee, Falkirk and Edinburgh. They also sell furniture including arm chairs, sofas, cabinets and desks. The retailer also offers up a host of women's clothing like jeans, dresses and knitted cardigans. Accessories, bags and jewellery are also on sale. A 'closed' sign has been placed in the shop window at Glasgow Central Station, The Glasgow Times reports. It read: "It's been a pleasure. This store is now closed." The Oliver Bonas website also states that the branch is now shut. The company added: "Sadly, our Glasgow Central store will be closing on Friday July 18, but your nearest stores will be Glasgow, Glasgow Gordon Street and Edinburgh, so you're never far away from an Oliver Bonas." There are still two branches in Glasgow, with one just metres away on Gordon Street. The store opened back in 2023 and was expanded across two floors. Huge high street retailer makes Irish return with first shop opening five years after devastating eight store closure The company previously said it would bring it's "unique blend of contemporary fashion, homeware, and gifts to even more communities". The store was part of the companies commitment to expanding their presence in Scotland and adding to their growing list of stores across the UK. The other Glasgow branch can be found on Byres Road in the west end. There are also stores in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and St Andrews.
