Carnival shares cruise loyalty news; Royal Caribbean cruiser fined

Yahoo16-05-2025

For some time now, Carnival Cruise Line has been teasing that it's working on a revamp of its VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) Club loyalty program.
In April, Carnival President Christine Duffy confirmed that enhancements to the program are indeed coming soon and will offer greater value and engagement for loyal Carnival cruisers. Details on these improvements are expected to be revealed this summer and take effect in 2026.But before the full details are unveiled, Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald just shared one key thing that the updated program won't include — and many passengers are not happy.
Doug Parker shared more details on Carnival's disappointing loyalty program news and other cruise news, including a case that reminds cruisers to be mindful of laws in cruise ports of call, on the May 9th edition of Cruise News Today.Transcript:
Cruise News Today with Doug Parker.
Good morning, here's your cruise news for Friday, May 9th.
A U.S. cruise passenger has been fined $2,500 in Bermuda after admitting to drug possession and importation. Pamela Walker, age 60, arrived aboard the Liberty of the Seas and asked customs officials if cannabis was illegal, then admitted to them that she had some.
Now officers found over 10 grams of cannabis, a small amount of the white stuff, and other drug-related items. Walker said that the drugs were for pain relief and apologized in court. The judge reminded her that drug laws vary by country. And Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed it will not offer loyalty status matching across its sister brands like Holland America, Princess, Cunard, and so on, which disappointed cruisers hoping for shared benefits like Royal Caribbean.
Despite being part of the same corporate family, Carnival says each brand is run independently with different pricing and perks, making a unified loyalty program impractical. Carnival's brand ambassador John Heald says there are no plans to change this, meaning that if Carnival guests are looking to try premium lines like Cunard or Princess, they'll have to start the loyalty program from scratch. And a federal appeals court has rejected a lawsuit by two Filipino crew members who claimed false imprisonment and emotional distress after being kept on board a Celebrity cruise ship during the early months of the pandemic.
The 11th Circuit Court sided with the Miami-based cruise line, noting that the CDC's no-sale order delayed crew repatriation and that the company followed strict protocols once the order was lifted.
The crew members, who remained on board for months, were eventually flown home in May of 2020. The court found that Celebrity's actions did not cross the line of being unlawful. And the photo of the week comes from Jeff on Sapphire Princess in Moorea. I hope I pronounced that correctly. And cruise line stocks were all up on Thursday. Carnival Corporation: up 3 percent, 20.25. Royal Caribbean: up 2 percent, 232.84. Norwegian: up 3 percent, 17.88. And Viking: up 1.2 percent, 43.57.

NCL's John Chernesky on improving support for travel advisors

When Norwegian Cruise Line's John Chernesky joined the company in April 2023 as senior vice president of sales for North America, he said his goal was to keep the line fresh in the minds of travel advisors. In a conversation with cruise editor Teri West in May, he reflected on his first two years in the role and why NCL's grades are getting better. John Chernesky Q: Tell me about how these first two years have been for you at the company and what you've learned in that time. A: It's hard to believe it's only been two years. It feels longer, in a good way, because I have really enjoyed my time. I love my team. I love the culture at NCL. Don't tell my boss I said this, but he's great. He has really allowed me to get into the weeds and understand the business of NCL and how does that then apply to the travel agent community. At the end of the day, my job is to be the biggest advocate for the travel advisor community that I can be internally within NCL, because I believe in the service that they provide, the value proposition they provide to their clients, that we simply can't succeed without them. Q: Are there any challenges that are shaping the way you think about the next year or two? A: I think it's the natural challenges of the industry, which are many, but we are, thankfully, very successful because, again, people see the value in cruising, and they want to go again and they want to bring their friends or family. Q: How have you seen the relationship between the cruise line and advisors evolve during this two-year tenure? A: I like to think it's gotten better, because I think I'm a very transparent, authentic person, in the sense that I will do my very best to tell you the truth. I'm not going to say the sky is blue if it's raining. And the success I think our team has had is that we focused on trying to be the easiest business partner that travel agencies work with. They have many suppliers that they work with -- multiple cruise lines, river lines, airlines, resorts, insurance companies, you name it. People want to work with people who make life easy for them, and there are other choices out there. And so our goal has been to become the easiest cruise line to work with. We actually measure ourselves in an annual survey [sent to travel agencies], and we're about to issue our 2025 survey in a couple weeks. ... I go back to my academic days, which, by the way, weren't fantastic, and I boil it down to, are we "A" students, are we "B" students, are we "C" students, etc. And when I started, the survey said we were "C" students, and last year we were "B" students. We made a lot of progress. And so I'm hopeful we're "A" students this year, but the time will tell with the survey. Q: Can you give me a little context about why travel advisors gave NCL a better grade? A: We had issues that we were solving with our air program, which has gotten a lot better. We had some sales support issues that we weren't very good at solving, and we shifted our focus there and made that process a lot more efficient, a lot better. Those were the two big things. And then systems, as well, our booking engine. We've launched a new system called Quest, which is not fully rolled out yet, and it only has a small fraction of the capabilities that it will ultimately have, but little things like that show we're listening and taking action. I like to be honest and say, "Hey, if we can do something we will do it, and if we can't, I'm sorry we can't do that now, but maybe in six months we'll try it again." And so I think that transparency has helped, and the agency community sees that we're taking action.

Royal Caribbean picks iconic godmother; Virgin Voyages faces issue

Royal Caribbean picks iconic godmother; Virgin Voyages faces issue originally appeared on Come Cruise With Me. Being selected as a cruise ship's godmother (or godfather) is a great honor — one that's historically been bestowed upon influential women from royalty and Hollywood stars to athletes and inspiring activists, and even Tinker Bell. Rooted in maritime tradition, the appointment of a cruise ship's honorary godmother is a meaning-filled practice that's central to the launch of every ship. Becoming a cruise ship's godmother doesn't require a big commitment, but it's a special role.A cruise ship's godparent participates in the ceremony to officially name and christen the vessel. During the naming ceremony, the godparent traditionally breaks a bottle of Champagne over the ship's bow to bless the new vessel with good luck and protection for all who sail on her. For Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, this christening act was performed by soccer superstar Lionel Messi. Now, a music icon has been selected to fill the important role for its sister ship, Star of the Seas. Doug Parker shared details on Royal Caribbean's newest cruise ship godmother, and other cruise news including mechanical troubles impacting Virgin Voyages' sailings, on the June 6th edition of Cruise News This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. The change follows a recent onboard power outage that happened last Thursday, raising concerns about ongoing mechanical issues with the Caribbean has named music legend Diana Ross as godmother of its newest ship, Star of Seas, set to debut in August. The ship, part of the line's Icon Class, will sail from Port Canaveral and feature destinations like CocoCay in The Bahamas. Ross will christen the ship in the Aqua Theater on the back of the vessel, continuing the maritime tradition of blessing the ship and its passengers.
