Disabled TNPSC aspirants forced to wait four hours for scribe form
Sources said the HoD's signature was not mandatory and that there has been a miscommunication between staff and the group. The aspirants have been told to come back on Tuesday.
Speaking to TNIE, M S Srikant (26) said, 'I am blind by birth, but that did not deter me. I completed MA and BEd, and will be appearing for the TNPSC group 2 exam. But the department has sought approval in a form, which will help to get a person (scribe) to assist me in writing the exams.
Along with a group of friends like me, I arrived at the Ophthalmology Department around 9 am, and was told by the staff to wait. Around 11.30 am, we were taken for eye test and then made to wait for some more time. Around 1 pm, the staff mentioned that the scribe form should be signed (approved) by Head of Department (Ophthalmology), but she had gone to Madurai Medical College (MMC) and we were told to come on Tuesday.'

MGM mortuary repairs sanctioned after TNIE report
WARANGAL: District Collector Dr Satya Sharada sanctioned Rs 4.95 lakh towards immediate repairs at the MGM hospital mortuary after TNIE highlighted the issue in its July 4 report titled, 'Cold shoulder: Freezers not working, stench from MGM's mortuary spreads.' The MGM Hospital mortuary has two body storage freezer units of five, four-body storage freezer units of one and three-body storage freezer units of one. In total, the mortuary can hold 17 bodies, all of which were previously stored in non-functional units. The work is being carried out by Serf Scientific Company, which has also assured a one-year maintenance service. Hospital Superintendent Dr K Kishore Kumar said the collector responded personally to the concerns raised by the family members of the deceased and ensured the release of special grants for maintenance.

Residents evacuated after ammonia gas leak from ice manufacturing unit; facility shut for operating without safety license
THOOTHUKUDI: Several residents of John Xavier Nagar were evacuated from their houses late on Monday night, following a leak of ammonia gas from a private ice manufacturing facility nearby. On Tuesday, the district administration shut down the facility until further notice, as it did not possess a licence from the industrial safety department. Sources said a pungent odour had steadily filled the atmosphere since Monday evening, and many of the residents, who had developed symptoms such as suffocation and nausea, fled their houses late that night. Upon information, fire and rescue services personnel, a police team led by town assistant superintendent of police C Madhan, and sub-collector M Prabu rushed to the spot and evacuated the families living in close proximity to the ice plant. "Over 10 North Indian workers at the plant were safely rescued and shifted to safer zones," said a rescue personnel. A senior official told TNIE that the ammonia concentration inside the facility gradually reduced after 12 am on Tuesday and masks were provided to the residents. Those who complained of throat irritation were advised to drink plenty of water, the official added.

Awareness exhibition conducted at SAT hosp
T'puram: As part of World Breastfeeding Week celebrations, SAT Hospital organised a breastfeeding awareness exhibition and a series of informative programmes for lactating mothers on Tuesday. The exhibition was inaugurated by hospital superintendent Dr S Bindu at the hospital's recreation hall. The event highlighted the importance of breastfeeding in ensuring healthy growth and improved immunity for infants. The exhibition drew significant participation from mothers and families, who were educated about postnatal care and the long-term benefits of exclusive breastfeeding. The event was jointly organised by the hospital's departments of neonatology, nursing and gynaecology. Dr A Shermin Nasreen (RMO), Dr Radhika (HoD, neonatology), former HoD Dr Shobha Kumar, Dr Ashwathi, Dr Sujamol Jacob (HoD, gynaecology), chief nursing officer Shyamala and senior nursing officer K Jyothi, along with staff and students from various departments, actively led the awareness activities. Interactive sessions, quiz programmes and special classes have been scheduled in the coming days.
