Rampant Nigeria smash five past Zambia to reach WAFCON semis
Nigeria delivered a dominant performance to demolish Zambia 5-0 and secure a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca on Friday.
The Super Falcons, unbeaten and unbreached in the tournament so far, maintained their defensive record while producing their most clinical attacking display yet, dismantling the Copper Queens with ruthless efficiency at Stade Larbi Zaouli.
Nigeria's intent was clear from the first whistle, and they needed just two minutes to assert control. Centre-back Osinachi Ohale rose highest to head home Esther Okoronkwo's pinpoint free-kick delivery, setting the tone for a night to forget for Zambia.
The nine-time champions doubled their lead in the 33rd minute when Okoronkwo, again heavily involved, finished off a flowing move with a composed strike into the bottom corner. Zambia, who had shown grit and flair in the group stages, looked shell-shocked.
Before the half-time whistle, Nigeria added a third. Chinwendu Ihezuo pounced on a loose ball in the box to slot in a left-footed finish and all but end the contest.
Zambia, for all their attacking prowess led by captain Barbra Banda and Grace Chanda, failed to replicate the fluid football that had seen them finish second in Group A.
Their attacks were often disjointed and met with a disciplined Nigerian backline anchored by Ashleigh Plumptre.
After the break, Nigeria remained in control. Oluwatosin Demehin made it 4-0 in the 68th minute, nodding in from close range after another set-piece wreaked havoc in Zambia's area.
The fifth arrived in stoppage time, with substitute Folashade Ijamilusi applying the finishing touch following good work by Rasheedat Ajibade.
Zambia's frustration was summed up by Banda's repeated offsides and speculative efforts, while Chanda's long-range attempt in the 51st minute was comfortably blocked.
With this emphatic victory, Nigeria maintain their push for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title. Zambia, who had hoped to build on their 2022 bronze finish, now exit the tournament having been outclassed by a side still to concede a single goal.
Nigeria will now await their semi-final opponents with growing confidence and belief that their dominance on the continent remains intact.

Sticks, Safe Hands and Leadership Nicknamed Sticks, Dlamini continues writing her name amongst global stars. In a WAFCON edition defined by narrow margins and big moments, the 32-year-old custodian continues to be the heartbeat of the defending champions who are desperate to defend their title. A combined 13 saves in three games means that Dlamini has made two more saves than she made in the six games South Africa played at the WAFCON 2022 edition in their lead up to winning their first ever title. 'It was exceptional team performance. When we went to penalties, we know the capabilities that Andile has. It was really important to get those saves that she made. We are proud of her performance and the team,' says the content Banyana Banyana captain Refiloe Jane. When Jane and Senegal's captain Korka Fall were done with the pre-penalty proceedings regarding the choice of the field the penalties would be taken and which team would go first, Dlamini received immense support from her teammates both on the field and those standing with the technical bench on the sidelines. After she conceded the first one netted by the eventual Woman of the Match Mama Diop, Dlamini turned to the bench and said she felt some pain but being the fighter that she is, she says, 'I got the encouragement. Ramalepe [Lebohang] said 'sharp' and that is what a team is about. I am just grateful that my mind just channeled into, 'I'm okay'. I need to do this for the team. I think at that moment, it was a moment of 'I have to do this for my team.' I just did what I could.' 'The three clean sheets come down to the defense of the team. Defense starts with the forwards, the way that they defend at the front and then in the middle then that line and then me. It is a matter of understanding your role on a specific day, communication. Positive messages to each other even when it is so difficult,' she adds with her signature wide smile. 'I remember there was an instance where it was a buildup, and the ball went out for a corner. Fifi (Refiloe Jane) came and tapped me at the back and said, 'Let's go'. That's beautiful because we are a team. That is the spirit of Ubuntu. That is captaincy. That shows that she is a leader more than anything. What is beautiful about Banyana Banyana is that you have all of that surrounding us. But it is not over. We still have to go to the semifinals and make sure that we do our best and hopefully see ourselves in the final.' Nemesis, Omnipresent Nigeria To be the best, one must beat the best. The Super Falcons are featuring in their 13th semifinal in 13 editions. Everpresent. Chasing their 10th WAFCON title, Nigeria are waiting for South Africa who themselves want to defend their title – one they won in 2022. Their first WAFCON trophy. Dlamini together with her teammates want to feel the same way they felt three years ago when they lifted the continental title in Rabat after beating the hosts Morocco 2-1 in the final. South Africa have defeated Nigeria twice in the last two editions including a 1-0 victory thanks to Thembi Kgatlana at the 2018 edition as well as a 2-1 win in 2022 courtesy of Jermaine Seoposenwe and Hildah Magaia's goals just after the hour mark. Tuesday's semifinal will see Dlamini come up against a ruthless Nigerian side that put five goals past Zambia in a one-sided encounter and an opposite number in Chiamaka Nnadozie who has kept a remarkable four clean sheets explaining why she is the current African Goalkeeper of the Year. But for Sticks, this is another opportunity to represent South Africa and make her nation pride. In one word, she calls it, 'Sbahle'. Sbahle which means beautiful in isiZulu. Ittihad of Alexandria sign Nigerian striker John Ebuka - Egyptian Football
Egyptian Premier League side Ittihad of Alexandria announced on Sunday the signing of Nigerian striker John Ebuka on a two-year contract. The 28-year-old joins from Masry, where he scored one goal in 12 appearances following a January move from Ceramica Cleopatra. The transfer reunites Ebuka with head coach Ahmed Sami, under whom he previously played at Ceramica Cleopatra, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 14 matches. Ittihad hopes Ebuka's experience in the Egyptian Premier League will strengthen their attacking line ahead of the new season. During his time with ENPPI, Ceramica Cleopatra, and Masry, he has scored 33 goals and provided eight assists in 114 league appearances. The Alexandria-based club has been active in the current transfer window. They recently secured Mohamed Toni and Mohamed Metwally 'Kanaria' from Ceramica Cleopatra in a swap deal that included Mohamed El-Maghrabi, with Mahmoud Ajeeb and Nour Alaa also joining Ittihad as part of the exchange. Asantewaa magic leads Ghana to coveted WAFCON semis
Under the scorching sun at the Berkane Stadium on Saturday evening, Ghanaian midfielder Grace Asantewaa's influence stretched across the pitch in a masterful performance that inspired the Black Queens to their first TotalEnergies WAFCON semifinals since 2016. Nine years of waiting – impatiently. Asantewaa, who was in the squad at the 2018 edition at home that failed to make it out of the group stages, has found redemption. Finally. It has been a long journey of doubt, hope then doubt, and back to hope. Amidst it all, a love for Ghana. 'I am very, very, very happy. I have been preparing for this. Ghanaians have been preparing for this. We had to kill ourselves. It is time for us to win this WAFCON. And also, as an individual I want to win this WAFCON. I want my name to be in the history books in Ghana, in Africa and the world. I am very happy, and I know that Ghanaians are happy,' Asantewaa explains with an ear-to-ear smile while squinting her eyes. Redemption ticked off to-do-list The matchup against Algeria in the third quarterfinal was personal. She remembers the pain – emotionally, physically and psychologically of failing to make it to the knockout stages seven years ago. The backlash was brutal. The impact across the board felt like many in Ghana stepped away from the team including those who would have been the go-to support. But like they say, 'good things take time'. Asantewaa remembers wanting to give up. 'I wanted to leave football. It was very tough. But my friends told me not to give up. My family too said they will support me no matter the case. And because of that I continued playing football. I continued preparing for our return to the WAFCON. Honestly, this feels really good. I'm happy.' Like the great Queen Asantewaa of the Ashanti Empire [modern day Ghana], who was known to be a war leader that commanded Ashanti Kings in the War of the Golden Stool fighting to defend and protect the sovereignty of her people, Grace directed the Black Queens midfield and controlled the game therein throughout regular and extra time. At some point, it looked like an orchestra. The conductor in her, dictated the frequency of the game, weaving passes in tandem with Jennifer Cudjoe. Asantewaa was not only relentless without the ball, but she also shaped Ghana's approach against a stubborn and solid Algerian team that had not conceded a goal in the tournament. Midfield Engine and Choir Leader With the ball, she threaded passes upfront, to the wings, pushed forward to the 18-yard box while constantly getting involved in the communication between the defense and the offense. Asantewaa was relentless. Her heat map will impress many a game analyst. Ghana head coach Kim Lars Björkegren is in cloud nine after this performance, 'She has been stepping up in every game that we have been playing. It seems that if a game is more important, she is going to play even better. That's really important for us. Both her and Cudjoe worked so hard. Normally, for a central midfielder, you cannot play 90 minutes or 120 minutes in a quarterfinal, but I couldn't take out those two because they kept going and they did it so well especially Grace.' The goalless draw motivated their resolve in the penalty shootout with Josephine Bonsu, Doris Boaduwaa, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, and Evelyn Badu converting from the spot to ensure a 4-2 deserved victory for the Black Queens. Ghana, who have now been involved in two penalty shootouts at the WAFCON, have won both. The result also means that the Black Queens have won three of their four games at the WAFCON to have gone to extra time. Semifinals unlocked Ghana have now reached their seventh WAFCON semifinal and will meet hosts Morocco at the grandeur Olympic Stadium in the capital Rabat on Tuesday, July 22 at 8pm (local time). 'We have done a very good job. We are going to the semifinals. We are not ending here. We are taking this mentality to the semifinals. I know for sure that we are going to win the trophy,' says the elated Asantewaa who cannot stop looking at the sky as if to thank the universe. Asantewaa is one of four players that had featured at the WAFCON prior to this edition and wants to inspire Ghana to the final. The Black Queens have reached the WAFCON final three times in the past – 1998, 2002 and 2006, losing to archrivals Nigeria on all occasions.
