Eamon Dunphy slams ‘clown' Jim Ratcliffe who is ‘too stupid to realise' he's ruining Manchester United
EAMON Dunphy was already in mid-season form in his preview of the 2025/26 Premier League season. Writing in his Irish Mirror column, he outlined why he foresees this campaign being a two-horse race for the title between holders Liverpool and Arsenal. 3 The 80-year-old doesn't see any grounds for optimism around Man United Credit: Crispin Rodwell - The Sun Dublin 3 Ratcliffe only owns a 27 per cent stake with the Glazers still the majority owners Credit: PA Advertisement 3 Ruben Amorim hasn't impressed Dunphy since his arrival at the club either Credit: Getty He explained why he doesn't see a renaissance on the way for Man City as he cited how their involvement in the Club World Cup will surely come back to bite them and competition winners Chelsea. But it was when he turned his attention to the more floundering members of the so-called 'Big Six' that he really hit top gear. He blasted: "Tottenham can't be taken seriously while Manchester United have ceased to be one of the great institutions of English society and have instead turned into a comedy club run by a clown called Jim Ratcliffe. Advertisement "This summer he spent over €200m on three players while cutting the €100 Christmas bonus to ordinary workers within the club. That's sick. It's also shortsighted. "And while he's too stupid to realise it, it'll also lead to the club's demise because fans have consciences in the way owners do not. "Ratcliffe is wrecking that club. All its history, all the goodwill it built within its local community, is being wiped away by a man with a large bank account and an even bigger ego. "Meanwhile, their team has flunked. The coach, Ruben Amorim, looks out of his depth. Both he and Ratcliffe will soon find themselves under enormous pressure." Advertisement The Red Devils get their domestic campaign under way on Sunday when the Gunners come to Old Trafford. On Thursday it emerged that a planned protest by fan group The 1958 against minority owner Ratcliffe has been shelved due to split opinion. Ratcliffe's unpopular policies, such as mass redundancies, failed signings and stadium plans, have sparked frustration within many in Man Utd's fanbase. Scenes at Easter Road as Hibs players celebrate with fans after thrilling Partizan win However, the protest had to be postponed after a survey found the supporters divided regarding the Ineos chief's handling since 2024 when he took over sporting operations. Almost 63 per cent of the near 26,000 respondents said the 72-year-old should be held to account for his decisions so far by means of a protest. Advertisement Against that though, 68 per cent also believe the billionaire businessman and Ineos should be given more time. The 1958 issued the following statement: "Jim Ratcliffe chose to get into bed with the Glazers and, in our opinion, is helping keep them in charge. 'SPLIT IS REAL' "With a fanbase as diverse and passionate as ours, finding the right balance isn't always easy. "We've had to consider momentum, timing, fan appetite, broader consequences of protest activity whilst assessing how current and future decisions may impact us as fans. "Given the current sentiment within the fanbase and particularly in light of these recent survey results, it's clear there is no unified view on the direction of the club under Ratcliffe. Advertisement "That split is real, and we believe it would be irresponsible to risk creating a situation that could result in any 'red on red' conflict inside or outside the stadium." United suffered their worst-ever Premier League campaign last season, finishing 15th on just 42 points. And they are facing their first season without European football since 2014 after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. But they have completed some impressive signings this summer with the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko joining Amorim's squad.

Shamrock Rovers boss reveals Euro hero Rory Gaffney took pay cut to stay at club
STEPHEN BRADLEY HAS revealed that striker Rory Gaffney turned down two contracts on two-year deals from rival clubs in the League of Ireland and eventually took a pay cut to remain at Shamrock Rovers so he could prove his worth this season. The striker, who turns 36 in October, underwent ankle surgery last year and was unsure if he would be able to continue his career in the game. He trained with Rovers without penning a new deal during pre-season and rejected the chance to move in order to remain at Tallaght Stadium. Advertisement Gaffney has now scored 12 goals in all competitions so far after hitting a brace in the 4-0 win over Ballkani of Kosovo that set up a Uefa Conference League play-off with Portuguese side Santa Clara. Bradley's side travel to the Azores for the first leg next week and do so with a striker seemingly at the top of his game after not even being fit enough to be registered for the club's Conference League campaign last season. 'You always have doubts, when you're in your mid-thirties and you have the injuries he's had. Of course, there's a little bit of doubt, but I also know Rory, I played with him and I trust him,' Bradley said. 'And the conversations are very honest, you know, 'I'm willing to come back. I'm willing to take a pay cut. If I'm injured, I'll walk away'. And I trust everything he says there, you know. And pre-season, we spoke all the way through it. He managed himself. And there's always that bit of doubt. It has to be at his age. 'But like I said, Rory's so matter-of-fact, if he tells you something, he believes it, and he's not saying it just to bullshit you. He wouldn't do that. He's not that type. So when he was talking to me, I knew he was telling me the truth, you know? Bradley explained how two rivals offered the striker a two-year deal but he rebuffed the interest and even accept reduced terms with the Dublin club. 'I think that probably sums up the career he's had. He could have walked away and had them two contracts, two-year deals, and been comfortable. But he said 'I want to win things. I want to taste Europe. I want to win the league. I want to win the Cup. I want to win things. I'm nearly there. I'm nearly finished. I want to finish on winning things'. And you have to admire that. Now the job would be negotiating for him next year.'
