Soccer-Milner to honour former teammate Jota with jersey number switch
Jota and his brother Andre Silva were killed in early July when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames in northwestern Spain.
The Portuguese forward had worn the number 20 during his time at Liverpool, where he and Milner played together for three seasons before the veteran midfielder's move to Brighton in 2023.
"Once I heard Carlos (Baleba) was looking to change his number and 20 was available, I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and obviously pay tribute to Diogo Jota," Milner said.
"(He was) an amazing player I was fortunate to play with and a great friend as well. So it'd be a great honour to wear his number in the Premier League."
Liverpool are permanently retiring the number 20 after consultation with the player's wife Rute and family. The squad number will not be used at any level, including the women's team and academy.
The 39-year-old Milner recently agreed a one-year contract extension with Brighton and is chasing Premier League history of his own.
With 638 Premier League appearances already to his name, he sits within striking distance of Gareth Barry's all-time record of 653 games.

Soccer-Sweden and Feyenoord great Kindvall dies at 82
(Reuters) -Former Sweden striker Ove Kindvall, who scored the winning goal for Feyenoord in the 1970 European Cup final, has died at the age of 82, the Dutch club said in a statement on Tuesday. Kindvall joined the Eredivisie side in 1966 and spent five prolific seasons in the red and white, scoring 129 goals in 114 league matches. Feyenoord won their only European Cup with a 2-1 win over Celtic after Kindvall netted the winner in extra time. They were the first Dutch club to win the continent's elite competition. Kindvall was also a national hero after playing a key role in securing Sweden's place at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. He also took part in the 1974 finals in West Germany. Soccer-Former West Germany World Cup winner Mill dies aged 67
(Reuters) -Former West Germany striker and World Cup winner Frank Mill has died aged 67, the German FA (DFB) said on Tuesday. The Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Moenchengladbach player was part of the West Germany squad at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where they lifted the trophy after a 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in the final. German media said Mill suffered a heart attack in May shortly after getting in a taxi in Milan. He was later flown back to Germany but never recovered. Born in Essen, Mill earned 17 caps and was part of his country's squad that claimed bronze at the 1988 Olympic Games. "We mourn the loss of Frank Mill, our 1990 world champion," the DFB said in a statement. "Rest in peace, Frank. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."
