Ajmal Perfumes narrates ‘The Untold Stories' with celebrity perfumers

Campaign ME11-03-2025

Collaborating with creative agency LPS Brands, Ajmal Perfumes has launched The Untold Stories to bring attention to its latest fragrance line.
The integrated campaign has been rolled out across social media, in both long- and short-form formats. The campaign was also spread through an out-of-home and media blitz, and launched with an event that featured a drone show, a takeover of the Burj Khalifa and a QR-code-led microsite.
'We reached out to the world of perfumery with this metaphorical blank piece of paper and asked them to draw up their inspiration,' said Abdulla Ajmal, CEO, Ajmal Perfumes in the campaign's 'CEO film'.
The five celebrity perfumers, Maxime Exler, Dalia Izem, Benjamin Bélizon, Nathalie Lorson, and Coralie Spicher, and their journeys with crafting the new signature scents are individually depicted within the campaign's hero film and their own individual videos that follow their creations of the five new scents.
'For Ajmal, this wasn't just about launching a new fragrance — it was about making history in the luxury perfume industry,' said Aasim Shaik, Managing Director of LPS. He explained that the scale and complexity of the campaign pushed the agency beyond just advertising. 'It blurred the lines between creativity, event production, and brand experience,' he said.
The film follows cheerfully integrated animations of blank sheets of paper (representing the pages in a storybook) take on creative forms of origami leaves, birds and flowers reflecting each master perfumer's 'Untold Story', and symbolising the notes each fragrance is rooted in.
'LPS had to design a campaign concept that embraced honoured this artistic freedom while ensuring a cohesive brand story,' Shaik explained. 'Instead of dictating a fixed narrative, we allowed the campaign to evolve organically, just like the perfumes themselves.'
The agency said it took a 360-degree approach, combining global talent with cinematic storytelling, actualised with the launch event at Atlantis The Royale, Dubai.
'Ajmal took a risk, and so did we. The result? A campaign that didn't just sell a product, it set a new benchmark for the fragrance industry,' said Shaik.
The campaign followed a structured multi-phase rollout plan. First, a teaser phase, which gathered more than 4m views on Instagram alone, followed by the interview film with CEO Ajmal and OOH displays ahead of the launch on 8 February.
'The highlight of the evening was a breathtaking drone show, where the story of the individual chapters was brought to life through a mesmerising book depiction in the sky,' said Shaik of the event. 'This was followed by two grand projections on the Burj Khalifa, visually narrating the fragrance's journey.'
The spectacle was live streamed on screens at the venue, creating a truly immersive experience for the audience. 'Additionally, an interactive QR-code-led microsite allowed attendees to explore the fragrance's story in depth, enhancing engagement and personalisation,' added Shaik.
Since the launch of 'The Five Chapters' of the Untold Stories fragrance line, Ajmal Perfumes will continue to market the scents with the campaign through May 2025, leveraging beauty bloggers and lifestyle influencers to amplify chatter around the line and keep the buzz going.

JD Sports and adidas lead with local culture in their ‘SMU campaign'

JD Sports fashion and adidas' partnered for a nostalgic campaign driven by culture-first storytelling and a clear goal to connect with the region's youth through an authentic lens. This campaign brought the story closer to home. 'Our insights highlighted the strong performance of localised campaigns in the region, consistently showing deeper consumer engagement and stronger results. This reinforced the importance of crafting a narrative rooted in local culture – something that feels familiar, authentic, and relevant to our audience,' said Eugene Karasev, adidas Senior Brand Director, EMC. As a result of this approach Mehak Nanda, Brand Marketing Manager, GMG found that, 'The campaign sparked a sense of nostalgia among younger audiences, even those who hadn't grown up in Dubai, highlighting how shared cultural aesthetics across the Middle East can create emotional connections across generations.' The campaign rollout spanned JD's social platforms, META ads and in-store touchpoints, including digital screens and POSMs across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and Kuwait. It targeted Gen Z and young adults (ages 13–30) in the UAE, especially those passionate about streetwear, sneaker culture, and lifestyle fashion, with a strong inclination toward brands that reflect their identity and environment. Many are digital natives who value authenticity over aspiration. The creative approach reflects that energy. To bring the story to life, the team developed 'The Neighbourhood' – a fictional but familiar setting inspired by youth culture in the region. Shot in a heritage-style Dubai neighbourhood, the visuals capture raw textures and tones that feel culturally rooted and visually compelling. The storyline follows a local artist navigating the city in standout adidas sneakers, crossing paths with a cast of creatives who appear throughout. The campaign zeroes in on JD's exclusive styles – known as SMUs. 'The narrative was shaped by the first-hand stories and lived experiences of third culture kids – those who grew up in old Dubai, spent time in its backstreets, and witnessed the city evolve around them. This was a passion project and a localised campaign launch fuelled by memory, community, and a genuine desire to portray the region in its truest form,' says Nanda. View this post on Instagram A post shared by JD Sports Middle East (@jdsportsme) Influencers were carefully selected for their connection to local communities and relevance within the adidas originals universe. The campaign featured a mix of regional micro-influencers – from artists and athletes to fashion creatives – selected for their genuine ties to community and culture. The result was bold, energetic content that reflected the sneaker culture through the lens of music and sport as well as regional identity. 'Influencer marketing played a key role in the campaign. The cast featured a curated group of local micro-influencers – spanning music, fashion, and multisport – who are well-known within their communities. These talents were chosen not only to reflect adidas Originals' deep ties to culture and creativity but also to ensure the campaign felt grounded in the region, bringing an added layer of authenticity and local relevance to the storytelling,' said Karasev. 'We handpicked a diverse mix of talent from the local community – it wasn't about influencer reach but about authentically highlighting JD's connection to music, fashion, and art in the region. We also created some fun behind-the-scenes content, styling reels, and location shoutouts (rolling out soon!) to further amplify the community-first message,' says Nanda. At the same time, the partnership focused on converting that awareness into sales by creating demand through impactful, locally resonant storytelling. According to Karasev, the primary goal of the campaign was to drive awareness around adidas and JD exclusives, positioning them as must-have drops within the region. 'The campaign was driven by JD's reputation for exclusive product offerings – known as SMUs – which are spotlighted through their signature 'Only at JD' callouts. These styles are central to JD's global and regional success and consistently resonate with consumers, yet there's often limited content to support them,' says Karasev. 'With both JD and adidas' growing footprint in the Middle East, this partnership presented a timely opportunity to spotlight adidas SMUs through a fresh, localised lens. The goal was to craft premium, bespoke content that not only captures the essence of both brands but also speaks directly to our regional audience. By delivering an always-on content approach across our partner's channels, the campaign reinforces the message of exclusivity while driving demand and differentiation in a highly competitive market,' said Karasev. 'Rooted in the streets of our region, it brings together adidas Originals' spirit of individuality with JD's 'King of the Streets' attitude,' says Nanda. The campaign is currently live across all JD stores and will run until the end of June 2025. It was launched across JD's social channels, META ads and in-store platforms, including POSMs and digital screens across key regional markets – UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and Kuwait. 'While the campaign is still live and the full report is in progress. We're primarily tracking reach and sell-through as key performance indicators,' said Karasev. As the market continues to demand deeper, more meaningful connections, this campaign suggests one thing loud and clear – when it comes to exclusivity, context is everything.

Here are the details of the viral Labubu, part toy, part fashion

Labubu, the plush toy from China's Pop Mart is a social media darling, but the toothy little monsters are far from an overnight success. Having appeared a decade ago, Labubus may have finally cemented their place in the collectible toy market for years to come. The Labubu, by artist and illustrator Kasing Lung, first appeared with pointed ears and pointy teeth, in three picture books inspired by Nordic mythology in 2015. In 2019 Lung struck a deal with Pop Mart, a company that caters to toy connoisseurs and influencers, to sell Labubu figurines. But it wasn't until Pop Mart started selling Labubu plush toys on key rings in 2023 that the toothy monsters suddenly seemed to be everywhere, including in the hands of Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and NBA star Dillon Brooks. K-pop singer Lisa of Blackpink began posting images of hers for her more than 100 million followers on Instagram and on TikTok, where Labubu pandemonium has broken out. There are 1.4 million #Labubu TikTok posts and counting, videos of fans unboxing them, showing styles inspired by them, and of course, Labubu cosplay. Fans have latched on to Labubu's mashup of play and fashion, making them accessories on handbags, backpacks and belts, or hanging them from car mirrors. "The character has evolved into a collectible and style symbol, resonating with fans who connect with its quirky aesthetic and unique backstory," Emily Brough, Popmart's head of IP licensing in the Americas, said. Labubu has been a bonanza for Pop Mart. Its revenue more than doubled in 2024 to 13.04 billion yuan ($1.81 billion), thanks in part to its elvish monster. Revenue from Pop Mart's plush toys soared more than 1,200% in 2024, nearly 22% of its overall revenue, according to the company's annual report. Aside from their ability to pique the interest of toy aficionados and fashionistas, Labubu latched on to the blind box phenomenon, where the purchaser doesn't know exactly which version of the plush toy they'll get. And Pop Mart made sure there is a Labubu for everyone, regardless of income. Most are priced in a wide rage between $20 and $300, with certain collaborations or limited editions priced higher, according to Brough. Unlike many toys, Labubu devotees include a large number of adults. Buyers ages 18 and over drove a year-over-year increase of more than $800 million in the U.S. toy market in 2024, according to market research firm Circana. Adult shoppers, mostly female, bought the toys for themselves. In 2025's first quarter, toy sales for those ages 18 and over rose 12% from the prior-year period. At $1.8 billion, adults also accounted for the highest spending among all age groups in the quarter. Like many retailers, Pop Mart is actively monitoring negotiations between the U.S. and just about every one of its trading partners as prices may be impacted. The situation with China is at the forefront, with President Donald Trump saying on Friday that the country "violated" an agreement with the United States on trade talks. Right now Pop Mart, whose products are manufactured across Asia, says that it is continuously scaling production and expanding distribution across its online shop, retail stores and blind box vending machines to meet increasing demand. Short supply has led to long lines at stores and at least one physical fight at a shopping center in the United Kingdom. Pop Mart said in an Instagram post late last month that it was temporarily suspending all in-store and blind box machine sales in the U.K. Peter Shipman, head of Europe, said in a Facebook post that the company is currently working on a new method to distribute toys to stores. Resellers have become problematic and many Labubu fans are still willing to pay exorbitant price markups. Looking to keep up with the overwhelming demand, Pop Mart says it's on track for 50 more retail locations in the U.S. by the end of the year. That'll give shoppers more chances to hunt for Labubus, as Pop Mart says it's planning multiple new Labubu releases tied to seasonal moments and holidays throughout the rest of the year.
