J&K official, two security officers among seven killed in Pakistani shelling in Jammu region
The deaths were reported hours before India and Pakistan agreed to stop all firing on land, air and sea at 5 pm. India alleged on Saturday night that Pakistan repeatedly violated the agreement.
Earlier on Saturday, Additional District Development Commissioner (Rajouri) Raj Kumar Thapa and his two staff members suffered injuries when an artillery shell hit his home in the town of Rajouri, PTI reported.
All three were taken to the Government Medical Hospital, where Thapa succumbed to his injuries.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that Thapa was a dedicated officer of the J&K Administration Services. 'Just yesterday he was accompanying the Deputy CM around the district & attended the online meeting I chaired,' he said. '…I've no words to express my shock & sadness at this terrible loss of life. May his soul rest in peace.'

Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, who hailed from Himachal Pradesh, was killed in a Pakistani artillery shell explosion near his post in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch, PTI reported. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that he spoke with the officer's father, and that officials have been directed to carry out Kumar's last rites with full state honours.
Border Security Force Sub-Inspector Mohammed Imteyaz was killed in cross-border firing by Pakistan along the International Border in the RS Pura Sector. Imteyaz 'gallantly led from the front' while heading the BSF border outpost, the security force said, according to The Indian Express.
Seven others were injured and were taken to a hospital.

In Rajouri, two more persons – two-year-old Aisha Noor and 35-year-old Mohammed Shohib – were killed in shelling near an industrial area, PTI reported. Three others were injured.
A 55-year-old woman named Rashida Bi was killed in mortar shelling in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district. On the outskirts of Jammu, a 45-year-old man named Zakir Hussain was killed and two others, including a girl, were killed injured in shelling in the Kheri Keran village.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have been escalated since the Indian military on Wednesday carried out strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 persons on April 22.
The Pakistan Army has retaliated by repeatedly shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
On Thursday, the Indian armed forces said they had neutralised attempts by Pakistan to use drones and missiles to target military installations in 15 towns and cities on Wednesday night. That evening, India said it had repulsed several attacks using drones and other munitions along the western border.

Billionaire Uday Kotak calls for urgent support to help India withstand US tariff shock
Indian banking billionaire Uday Kotak has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to provide stronger budgetary support to small and medium-sized enterprises, warning that the country faces a 'major shock' from US tariffs. Kotak, founder of Kotak Mahindra Bank, India's third-largest private lender, told the Financial Times that the tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump had 'woken Indians up' to the vulnerabilities of the economy. 'We must think about this as an opportunity for us to get out of our cruise mindset and from a comfort mindset to 'we are at risk',' he recently imposed an additional 25 per cent levy on Indian imports, including discounted Russian oil, on top of existing 25 per cent 'reciprocal' tariffs. The US president has cited the oil imports as helping finance Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine. Earlier this month, Anand Mahindra, chair of the Mahindra Group, called for more liquidity for SMEs, infrastructure investment, and incentives for manufacturers. He stressed the importance of manufacturing and warned against relying solely on India's domestic market to avoid India's per capita GDP at $2,700, far below China's $13,300 and the US's nearly $89,000, he argued the country cannot afford to remain in a comfort zone. 'At the current 'cruise' level, we'll keep on improving our position, but is it fast enough for us to get past the middle-income trap? I think there's a gap,' Kotak said.

Kerala: Cong flag instead of tricolor hoisted at CPI(M) branch office on I-Day
Agency: Kochi, Aug 20 (PTI) In an embarrassing mix-up, a CPI(M) branch committee in Eloor here has hoisted the Congress party's flag instead of the national flag during the Independence Day celebrations. According to party sources, the incident occurred after an elderly local leader, who also serves as an office-bearer of the Left party's Senior Citizens' Forum, mistakenly took the Congress flag for the tricolour. Several local leaders and members attended the function, a party leader said here on Wednesday, confirming the embarassing incident. It was only after the hoisting that a participant pointed out the error, another leader said. 'The flag of the Congress party remained hoisted for hardly 10 minutes," he said, adding that it was immediately taken down. However, photos and videos of the incident went viral on social media. 'The leader concerned admitted that he had kept several party flags with him and accidentally mistook the Congress flag for the national flag. Considering his age and the circumstances, the party has decided not to take disciplinary action," the leader added.
