AAP vs Congress After Chief Minister Tables Anti-Sacrilege Bill In Punjab Assembly

NDTV5 days ago
Chandigarh:
The Punjab Assembly witnessed uproar today when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government tabled the anti-sacrilege bill, proposing punishment up to life imprisonment for sacrilegious acts against religious scriptures. The 'Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill 2025 was presented by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in the House for discussion.
However, the discussion has been deferred to Tuesday after the Leader of Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa, said that the members need time to prepare to keep their viewpoints effectively on the bill.
How can we debate on such a delicate issue without going through the draft? asked the Congress leader.
After the proceedings of the house, Bhagwant Mann said that very serious issues were discussed in the assembly. "I introduced the bill. It should be considered immediately. The opposition leader of the house, Pratap Singh Bajwa ji is saying that he has no information about the bill. It is sad that if he does not have information about the desecration of Guru Sahib, then where has he been? Ask a five-year-old child what happened in Bargari? What happened in Behbal Kalan? What happened in Kotkapura? He says that he will come tomorrow after preparing. We said okay. Surprisingly, the Congress has to prepare even in the case of desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib. They cannot talk without doing homework. No problem, come tomorrow after preparing. We will discuss tomorrow," he said.
"This is an issue close to our heart. We hope that this bill will be passed tomorrow and will be passed unanimously. This is a very big bill; Punjab is the only state that is bringing this bill. I will again tell the Congress that today they were not prepared; come prepared tomorrow," said the Chief Minister.
Mr Bajwa criticised Mr Mann for his remarks and explained his party's stance, saying, "You must have seen that the session was called special, but there is no preparation. The serious issue that every Punjabi is worried about is the issue of sacrilege. The Punjab Chief Minister had promised that if his party comes to power, it will do justice in sacrilege cases within 24 hours. But even today, after three and a half years of this government, they do not even have a rough draft ready for this. You will be surprised that a similar bill was brought by the Congress government in 2018. I would like to tell the House that the bill was passed unanimously. Every party, including AAP, Akali Dal and BJP, passed it unanimously. We are surprised that first a two-day session was given to us, then an attempt was made to put a gun on our shoulder by putting it in our account and then, on the request of the opposition, the session was extended by two days. The two days that were given to us by the Speaker, our purpose was to discuss law and order. We wanted to discuss the land pooling policy for one day."
"Today, there was a meeting of all the parties with the Speaker, and everyone said that the serious issue of sacrilege should be discussed in a good atmosphere. The speaker gave us a paper fifteen minutes ago. Are we computers that we can know immediately by pressing a button? This is a technical and legal issue. Therefore, it is necessary to study it. I came to know that a little while ago, Mr Mann said that Bajwa sahab said that we are not ready, we need time tomorrow. I have to say with regret that our Chief Minister also needs to show seriousness on the issue of sacrilege. While the head of his party was also present at the meeting, everyone agreed that it should be discussed seriously. If a person disrespects any religious text, they should not go unpunished. The rest of the discussion will take place in the morning. The speaker has scheduled a discussion on it tomorrow," he said.
Continuing the tirade, Mr Bajwa said, "The 24-hour promise made by Mann and his party and (Arvind) Kejriwal to the whole of Punjab has not been fulfilled even after three and a half years. They have not been able to get the bill passed to date, which was unanimously sent to the President in 2018. We will bring the real face of the government in front of the people."
Before the start of the third day of the special session of the state Assembly, the Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill, 2025, was cleared by the cabinet in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mann here.
The bill mandates strict punishment, extending up to life imprisonment, for the desecration of holy scriptures, including the Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagavad Gita, Bible and Quran, an official spokesperson said after the cabinet meeting.
Under the Bill, offence means any sacrilege, damage, destruction, defacing, disfiguring, de-colouring, de-filling, decomposing, burning, breaking or tearing of any holy scripture or part thereof.

BJP slams Rahul Gandhi for defending Vadra, Priyanka over Baghel's son's arrest

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday hit back at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) charge sheet against Robert Vadra, accusing Gandhi of misusing his constitutional post to defend family interests. The BJP also criticised Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for defending former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel's son, Chaitanya Baghel, over his arrest in a liquor policy-linked money laundering case. BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi. (File Photo) 'The first family of the corruption-ridden Congress always bands together to cover up each other's misconduct. Brother in Lok Sabha, mother in Rajya Sabha, sister in Lok Sabha and all the land holdings with brother-in-law Robert means, whether they have the political holdings or not, they ensured land ownership by grabbing farmers' land. For this, they divide the country along linguistic, regional and caste lines,' BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said during a media briefing in Delhi. Trivedi questioned Rahul Gandhi's response, asking whether Gandhi made his statement as an individual or as a person holding a constitutional post. 'What Rahul Gandhi had posted, did he do it as an individual or as a leader of Opposition, or did he misuse the constitutional post to defend family interests?' Congress is yet to respond to the BJP's remarks. On Friday, Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP-led government of pursuing a 'politically motivated witch hunt' against Vadra after ED filed its first charge sheet in the Gurugram land deal case. Gandhi said his family would face the persecution with dignity and that 'the truth will prevail.' The ED's charge sheet pertains to a 3.53-acre land deal in Shikohpur, Gurugram, allegedly bought in 2008 using dubious financial arrangements. The federal agency attached 43 properties worth ₹37.64 crore belonging to Vadra and his companies. Vadra had been questioned three times by ED in April 2025. His office dismissed the charge sheet as 'an extension of the political witch hunt,' adding that Vadra would contest the case in court. Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi condemned the arrest of Chaitanya Baghel, alleging it was an attempt to silence former CM Bhupesh Baghel on key environmental issues in the state assembly. 'The BJP government handed over Chhattisgarh's forests to Adani ji, violating the PESA Act and NGT orders. Bhupesh Baghel ji was going to raise this in the assembly, so they arrested his son early in the morning,' Priyanka posted on X. Chaitanya Baghel was arrested by ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) following early morning raids at his residence in Bhilai, Durg district. He was remanded in ED custody till July 22 by a special PMLA court. According to the ED's remand application, Chaitanya allegedly received ₹16.70 crore in proceeds of crime through two linked firms, including ₹5 crore via M/s Saheli Jewellers. ED noted ₹4.5 crore remains unpaid and interest-free, terming the transactions a suspected front for laundering illicit cash.

Rahul using his constitutional position to protect family crimes: BJP

The BJP on Saturday (July 19, 2025) accused Rahul Gandhi of misusing his constitutional position as the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha to "protect" his family's crimes. The party made the allegations as part of its continued targeting of the Congress leader's defence of his brother-in-law, Robert Vadra, who has been charged by the ED with money laundering. Speaking to reporters, BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi claimed that the Opposition INDIA bloc is beset with internal conflict and faces disintegration ahead of Parliament's Monsoon Session beginning Monday. Citing a Hindi song, Mr. Trivedi took a swipe at the Opposition alliance, wondering how worse its future is going to be when its present is in such dire straits. The Aam Aadmi Party has already announced that it is no longer in the alliance, while the CPI(M) took a "naive" dig at Mr. Gandhi following his attack on the Kerala government. Noting that Mr. Gandhi addressed Mr. Vadra as his "brother-in-law" in an X post, accusing the government of a "witch hunt" against him, the BJP MP said it is clearly a family, and not a political issue, for the Congress leader. Mr. Gandhi has come out to protect Mr. Vadra's properties collected through corruption, he alleged, noting that the Congress leader is himself on bail in a corruption case. Mr. Trivedi wondered if Mr. Gandhi posted the message in his personal capacity or as the Leader of Opposition, and said, "He has misused his constitutional position to protect his family crimes." He accused the Congress's "first family" of seeking power and money even if it means dividing society in the name of region or language. "Why should the Congress's first family, which is neck-deep in corruption, level political allegations in a family matter?" Mr. Trivedi asked. With Priyanka Gandhi targeting the ruling BJP in the wake of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arresting the son of former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel in a corruption case, the BJP leader claimed that Gandhi family members are protecting the corrupt. Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused the government of launching a witch-hunt against Vadra after the ED filed a charge sheet against the businessman in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a land deal in Haryana's Shikohpur. Mr. Gandhi asserted that the truth shall eventually prevail and that his sister Priyanka and her family will withstand any kind of "persecution." Mr. Trivedi also scorned Gandhi for his barb at the Narendra Modi government over its dealings with China. "It is regretful that the one who travels abroad the most has no understanding of foreign policy," he said, adding that he needs to get the "circuit" of his mind checked for making a "circus" barb at the government's policy. Tagging a media report on External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar calling on Chinese President Xi Jinping and apprising him of the recent development in India-China ties, Gandhi had on Tuesday said he was "running a full-blown circus aimed at destroying India's foreign policy."

Rahul Gandhi should unite secular forces instead of creating divisions: John Brittas

'The sole purpose of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi should be to unite 'secular forces' and not create 'confusion and division' among them,' CPI(M) leader John Brittas said on Saturday (July 19, 2025.) Mr. Brittas was reacting to the Congress leader's remarks in Kerala, where he equated the Communist Party of India (Marxist) with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The CPI(M) Rajya Sabha leader however added that it would not impact the Opposition's unity in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. Rahul Gandhi accuses RSS, CPI(M) of lacking empathy for the people Mr. Gandhi, speaking in Kerala's Kottayam on Friday (July 18, 2025), said that he fights the RSS and the CPI(M) ideologically, but his biggest complaint about them was their lack of feelings for the people. Asked his view on Mr. Gandhi's remark, Mr. Brittas said, "It's ridiculous, preposterous." "Whenever he goes to Kerala, there is a penchant for him to speak such rubbish things. And I think the Kerala Congress Party is responsible for that. He chose Kerala as the battleground to take on RSS. Whereas, it was actually a fight between the Left and the Congress there," Mr. Brittas told PTI. "I would earnestly wish that leaders like Rahul Gandhi, who is Opposition leader, his sole purpose should be to unite the secular forces, instead of creating confusion, division amongst the rank and file of the secular parties. He doesn't need to give lessons to CPI(M) on how to take on RSS," he said. Baby hits out at Rahul Gandhi for equating CPI(M) with RSS He pointed out that the Left parties supported the Congress-led UPA in 2004 only to keep the BJP out of power. He also questioned the role of the Congress during the demolition of Babri Masjid and the Ram Janmbhoomi movement. "We had supported the Congress Party in 2004, just to keep BJP away from power. And we know the vacillations of the Congress Party, and how it cost the country very, very dearly," said Mr. Brittas. "The way in which they dealt with the Ram Janmbhoomi Movement, how the locks of Babri Masjid were opened … how Congress presided over the demolition. We all know that. So, let us not bring in topics which create division amongst the secular forces," he said. "And as the Opposition leader, he has the bounden responsibility to make sure that the focus is on BJP," he added. Asked if Mr. Gandhi's remark may impact the Opposition unity in the upcoming Monsoon Session, Mr. Brittas said, "We are confident that we will overcome all these issues... I am very optimistic about the days to come." He added, "But I would rather expect leaders like Rahul Gandhi to be much more mature and responsible … And we are for an united opposition in the parliament." Mr. Brittas also took to X to attack the LOP over his remarks. "The Congress party in Kerala seems determined to keep Rahul Gandhi politically naïve. He and his sister chose Kerala as their staging ground for their so-called full-frontal attack on the RSS – launched from the safe zone of Wayanad, a bastion of their coalition partner Indian Union Muslim League. No risks, all gain," he said. Mr. Brittas said what Rahul Gandhi knows about the RSS may "well have come from our late leader, Sitaram Yechury."
