Kerala rapper Vedan arrested for alleged possession of marijuana

Hindustan Times28-04-2025

Popular Kerala rapper Hirandas Murali, who goes by the stage name Vedan, was on Monday arrested for the alleged possession of marijuana, a police officer said.
The police seized the drugs during a raid conducted by the Hill Palace police at the rapper's apartment in Vyttila, Kochi on Monday.
'Vedan has admitted that he has been using drugs. We seized around 6 grams of marijuana from the apartment. We have recorded his arrest, and he will be released on station bail as the quantity of drugs seized is minimal,' an officer from the Hill Palace police station said.
The police have also confiscated around ₹9 lakh in cash from the rapper's apartment where some of his artist colleagues were present.
'They claimed the money was the revenue they earned from a stage show. It collectively belongs to the group. We will have to verify it,' the officer added.
The rapper was under their observation for quite some time and the raid was part of a tip-off. While Vedan has revealed the source of the drugs, the police declined to reveal the name.
Vedan burst onto the scene in Kerala during the pandemic in 2020 when his first music video on YouTube titled 'Voice of the Voiceless' garnered praise. But it was in 2024 when he became a household name through the rap track 'Kuthanthram' that he wrote and sang for the Malayalam blockbuster film 'Manjummel Boys'. The track was a result of his close collaboration with music director Sushin Shyam.
Vedan's arrest comes just a day after two prominent young directors, Khalid Rahman and Ashraf Hamza, were arrested and booked by the excise department for alleged possession of hybrid marijuana.
The Kerala police and the excise departments have been engaged in a relentless anti-drug operation across the state for the past few months following reports of major implosion of drugs, especially synthetic substances like hybrid marijuana, methamphetamine and MDMA, into the state. Cases of violence fuelled by drugs and overall seizures have soared in the past two years.

Neil Nitin Mukesh says big stars get big movies even after giving 10 flops in a row: ‘But for us, they say your career is over'

Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh has recently opened up about the hurdles he faced in the industry after starting his career in 2007 with 'Johnny Gaddaar'. Neil, who got his breakthrough with Kabir Khan 's 'New York', admitted that the industry has treated him unfairly. He also shared that while some stars continued to get films back-to-back despite multiple flops, he was written off by industry insiders after just a few box office setbacks. Neil Nitin Mukesh about 'unfair' practices in industry Hai Junoon! | Song - Hum The Woh Thi In a conversation on Varinder Chawla's YouTube channel, Neil reflected on how box office results dictate an actor's journey. According to him, critical acclaim is often dismissed if the numbers don't impress. He pointed out that even playing a pivotal role in a high-profile project doesn't necessarily benefit supporting actors—unless they're already established stars. He shared that if a film flops, everyone involved faces the backlash. He called the trend 'unfair'. Notably, he had a major hit with ' Prem Ratan Dhan Payo ', starring Salman Khan . Neil also shared his thoughts on the team effort behind his early success, 'New York'. The film also starred John Abraham and Katrina Kaif in lead roles. 'Like New York, it's not just John's, mine, or Katrina's film. It doesn't belong solely to Kabir Khan—it's a collaborative effort. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Good News: You May Be Richer Than You Think Undo Everyone has put in hard work. ZEE5 aims to slash operating losses by up to 60% in FY26

Mumbai: ZEE5 , the streaming platform owned by Zee Entertainment , aims to reduce its operating losses by 50-60% in FY26, president of digital businesses and platforms Amit Goenka said. The OTT industry has shifted its focus to achieving profitability after years of heavy investments in subscriber acquisition, which had taken a toll on their P&L. In FY25, ZEE5 reduced its Ebitda loss to ₹548 crore from ₹1,105 crore in the previous year. The company has been aggressively cutting costs to achieve its goal of an 18-20% Ebitda margin in FY26. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo "This year, we are striving to reduce our Ebitda losses by more than 50-60% compared to last year. ZEE5 is the only division in Zee Entertainment that is not yet profitable, and we are looking to make it Ebitda-positive," he said. According to Goenka, producing content at a competitive price has been Zee's strength, and the company wants to maintain the cost advantages it has built over the years. Live Events ZEE5's focus on investing more in the story than in the star cast has helped it reduce costs-unlike other major streamers who spend huge amounts of money on star-driven shows, he noted. "We will control our costs and at the same time deliver quality content to audiences," he said. ZEE5 is planning to launch 100 content titles in FY26, with a focus on language-based offerings in markets like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali. In FY25, the platform launched 60 pieces of content across movies and originals. Goenka also downplayed concerns that stringent cost controls would impact revenue growth, even as the platform competes with giants like Netflix, Prime Video and JioHotstar. ZEE5's revenue grew by 6% in FY25 to ₹976 crore. "Controlling costs can still help you grow users and offer a great content experience because how you tell the story is more important than the face behind it," he said. While ZEE5 has a hybrid subscription and ad-led model, Goenka sees a lot of potential in the subscription model and intends to partner with telcos, broadband players and other distribution platforms to reach new audiences in tier-2 and -3 cities. The platform also aims to double down on technology to improve user experience and experiment with emerging genres like short-form vertical video.
