Offer being prepared for Liverpool's James Milner regen
The squad is well and truly stacked right now. Before the summer ends, the club's net-spend will fall significantly as Arne Slot begins to outline his plans for the upcoming campaign. It's an exciting time.

Pre-season has been a good indicator to assess whether any of Liverpool's promising stars are ready for a more regular first-team involvement and others have shot up the club's pecking order.
🔴
But we're now nearing the start of the season and a number of judgement calls will need to be made.
Some will be loan moves and others might be moved on permanently. There are plenty of options.
Stephenson considered for move
One of the main youngsters Liverpool have been developing recently has been Luca Stephenson, a 21-year-old English player capable of performing in a number of different positions around the pitch.
By trade, he is a midfielder, but his time spent in the first-team has seen him become a makeshift right-back and centre-back. In some ways, he's our new James Milner, playing all over the place.
He's been a key asset in the pre-season tour of Asia, playing in defensive positions and his ability to play makeshift roles has become incredibly important, while Liverpool's squad planning continues.
But if the Reds do sign a centre-back, then it is highly likely that Stephenson will be pushed out of the squad, since we have two right-backs and the midfield pack is almost impenitrable right now.

Panthers joint practice observations: Tetairoa McMillan bounces back, Bryce Young praised
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — This summer has been all about the bounce-back for Carolina Panthers rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillan. And so it was again Wednesday for the No. 8 pick, who dropped a pass in the end zone during the joint practice against the Cleveland Browns — only to redeem himself a couple of minutes later by pulling down a touchdown pass from Bryce Young during seven-on-sevens. Advertisement McMillan also had a drop Tuesday, but the elements had something to do with that one. The Panthers practiced two hours in a hard rain ahead of the practice with the Browns. But the teams received a break with the weather Wednesday, when the rains stopped before the start of the joint session and didn't resume until both coaches were talking to their teams afterward. The practice wrapped up with a diving touchdown catch by young wideout Brycen Tremayne in the same end zone where McMillan had hooked up with Young earlier. Panthers coach Dave Canales saw McMillan's drop as a learning opportunity: It came on a play when Young stopped him on a corner route by throwing behind the defender rather than leading McMillan to the pylon. 'I think that was a new one for T-Mac because he was like, 'Oh, shoot. This is a good spot for it,'' Canales said. 'Bryce kinda saw it. I was excited about that. Bryce turned around to me, we're both smiling. We would love him to catch the ball. He will.' And he did moments later when Young zipped the ball to McMillan on a slant route. McMillan arrived at his first camp with a built-in chemistry with Young after the two threw together before the draft. Young targeted McMillan a lot Wednesday, but chalked that up to the coverages the Browns' secondary was playing. TMac tuddy — Carolina Panthers (@Panthers) August 6, 2025 'He probably got a few more targets. There's been practices where it's been him, it's been Adam (Thielen), X (Xavier Legette), all the way down. So that's how it went today,' Young said. 'We want to make sure we do whatever's best for the team, take advantage of what the defense gave us.' Other observations from the Browns-Panthers practice: The last time the Browns were in Charlotte, Matt Rhule was still the Panthers' coach and Baker Mayfield was facing his former team after Cleveland traded him to Carolina in the offseason. Defensive end Myles Garrett had two of the Browns' sacks on Mayfield in Cleveland's 26-24 win in the 2022 season opener. Advertisement Garrett had never faced Young before Wednesday. But the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year clearly was familiar with Young, who returned from a five-week benching last season to play well down the stretch. Garrett said Young looks a lot more comfortable in the pocket than early in his career. 'I think they really rallied around him and they're seeing that he can lead this team and do well,' Garrett said. 'The playmaking and game-changing ability hasn't changed. I think it's just him finding his own confidence, being comfortable in the role and then allowing him to lead and standing behind him, I think that was big for him. And he's only going to continue to settle in and become a bigger and bigger playmaker.' Bryce Young says playing 1st preseason game is a great opportunity to get his feet wet. — Joe Person (@josephperson) August 6, 2025 Young had a good day. The protection was mostly strong and Chuba Hubbard ran the ball well. And Canales thought the offense played with physicality. What he didn't like was a lapse during the second team period, when officials called three delay-of-game and two false-start penalties (but didn't stop the play) on the Panthers. 'It got sloppy,' Canales said. 'We can't have that. We're gonna put ourselves in really bad spots when we're putting ourselves in first-and-15. Or if it's a third-and-6 and we have a false start. All of a sudden it's third-and-11, makes it really hard.' A day after he was listed No. 1 on the Panthers' first depth chart, veteran kicker Matthew Wright took advantage of drier conditions (compared to Tuesday) and wider goal posts for a perfect day. Kicking on standard goal posts for the first time in camp — Browns kickers took aim at the narrow posts — Wright went 5-for-5 on field goals. Canales has been alternating kickers each day. If he sticks with that plan, it would mean Ryan Fitzgerald will get the attempts during Friday's preseason game. The rookie from Florida State went 1-for-5 on Tuesday in the rain and on the skinny posts. Panthers safety Tre'von Moehrig conceded Wednesday was something of a rarity: A joint practice with no major melees. 'I think it was good,' said Moehrig, the former Raider. 'Mutual respect between both teams. We played in between the whistles and we're cool afterwards. So it was pretty smooth.' At the urging of Canales and Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, veterans from both teams met before practice to discuss what Canales called the 'rules of engagement' — no cheap shots, no diving at legs, etc. The cooler-than-normal temperatures and absence of fans also might have helped keep the peace. Advertisement And while tempers flared a few times, teammates would intervene and prevent things from escalating. 'I saw two groups come in there not to throw haymakers and blindside shots, but to pull the guys apart,' Canales said. 'They were kind of jawing at each other in a playful way, big smiles and a lot of juice. I can't dream of a better situation.' • Canales plans to play Young and the other starters 8 to 12 plays on Friday, saying ideally that would be one drive for the offense. That was the extent of Young's preseason action last year, although that one drive didn't come until the third game against Buffalo. But Young didn't blame his slow start in the regular season on his lack of preseason work. 'I think it will be great for us. A lot of familiar faces, but obviously some new pieces. And every year we're a new team,' Young said. 'I think it will be a great thing for myself, all of us to kind of get our feet wet a little bit in the preseason.' • Panthers linebacker Claudin Cherelus left practice early with a groin injury, which would be a blow to the special teams units if it turns out to be serious. Cherelus, who played in 13 games last year, had a nice pass breakup before getting injured. • Diontae Johnson has changed teams a few times since the Panthers traded him to Baltimore last October. Johnson joined the Browns on a one-year deal in May, and has been part of Cleveland's receiving rotation in camp. But Johnson didn't appear to make any splash plays Wednesday (it was tough to see parts of practice from where the media was stationed) and ended the day with a clean uniform. Bradley Barcola transfer would throw up crucial Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi question for Liverpool
Liverpool's 2025 summer transfers will be remembered for many years to come as a whirlwind window, one that FSG seemingly unshackled itself of the usual constraints, flexed its muscles and showed that the Reds are among the biggest on the planet. Few could have seriously predicted a summer spend of just under $400 million, or around £300M. The arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike are statement signings on the back of such a convincing title win - and they could still be eclipsed by Alexander Isak's potential deal. Should Newcastle United's stance soften, then Liverpool is likely to make its move despite already landing a new No. 9. But for all the hype, the squad remains light in two key departments. Center-back is the most obvious given Trey Nyoni, Andy Robertson and Wataru Endo all started at the heart of defense during Monday's double header against Athletic Bilbao. READ MORE: Liverpool 'admires' Marc Guehi transfer alternative as Reds face Tottenham competition READ MORE: Everything Eddie Howe has said on Alexander Isak as striker banished amid Liverpool transfer saga Arne Slot's resources in the wide areas should also raise a few eyebrows. Luis Diaz's departure and the expected exit of Federico Chiesa leaves the Reds with just two recognized senior wingers in Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo. Rio Ngumoha is expected to play a bigger part at first-team level this term, although Slot will be wary of placing too much onus on a 16-year-old's shoulders. Ben Doak could also be an option, but is open to leaving this summer, while Frimpong, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ekitike can all be utilized out wide. But it's still an area of concern for the Reds. Rodrygo has been mentioned as a possible solution, Anthony Gordon's name has again cropped up in media whispers, and Malick Fofana was briefly flavor of the month. On Wednesday, with less than four weeks of the window left, another name emerged. Bradley Barcola will need no introduction to Liverpool supporters. The 22-year-old played in every single Paris Saint-Germain Champions League game en route to winning the competition last season, including the last-16 matches against Liverpool, and provided 21 goals and 21 assists in all competitions. They're staggering numbers, so reports in L'Equipe that the Reds are considering a move for PSG star, while not ruling out a move for Isak too, will have been well received on Merseyside. Transfer reporter Sacha Tavoleieri has since claimed Liverpool is planning a 'concrete offer' and wrote on X that any transfer would be north of €100M ($117M/£87M). Should it happen, it's a deal that would make sense for Liverpool given its lack of options in the wide areas, while Barcola would fit into the age range and talent required to pique FSG's interest. That he has fallen out of Luis Enrique's first-choice XI is another factor worth considering. On the surface, it seems more practical to add a winger above a striker - although that stance could shift if Darwin Nunez leaves in the next few days. A common question over recent weeks has been how Liverpool can afford such a lavish outlay this window. Those in the know on the complex topics of PSR, SCR, and FFP have repeatedly insisted Liverpool's finances are so healthy that concluding a deal for Isak remains possible. The bigger question, perhaps, is whether Isak, Barcola, and a center-back—let's say Marc Guehi—could be acquired in the coming weeks while Liverpool remains within the financial regulations. If so, that really would be a summer for the ages! For now, it seems a bizarre verdict on a title-winning squad that has strengthened to such an extent in the market, but Slot's group does still feel a little light in certain areas. Barcola would undeniably help and provide FSG with another statement signing.

Ekitike and Mamardashvili moments spotted in Liverpool tunnel cam vs Athletic Bilbao
Liverpool won a pair of friendlies — 4-1 and 3-2 — against Athletic Bilbao on Monday. The side returned to Anfield for the first time after forward Diogo Jota's death. Tributes rang throughout the home stadium in both contests. The club has now released its typical "Behind the Scenes" tunnel footage of both games, which featured a pair of Liverpool debutants: striker Hugo Ekitike and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The players seemed to generate a positive buzz both from the crowd and their Reds teammates. Both debuted in the second after talented 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha lit up the first fixture with a stunning solo goal just two minutes into the match. The club recently announced his No. 22 jersey number: it was conveniently stationed next to fellow Frenchman Ibrahima Konate's No. 5, as captured on Liverpool's YouTube. Ekitike wasn't featured much in the tunnel, though he was captured at one point looking jittery. Both Dominik Szoboszlai and match captain Wataru Endo came over to offer the 23-year-old a hug. Then, he let his game do the talking. Ekitike carried a delightful through-ball from Szoboszlai all the way to the touchline before deftly squaring it back to Mohamed Salah at the top of the box. The Egyptian slotted home into the Bilbao net to earn the French forward his first preseason goal contribution for the club — his Reds teammates rushed to congratulate him after the finish. A strong performance will help him earn a place in head coach Arne Slot's team (critical considering the pending arrival of Alexander Isak). Mamardashvili Liverpool purchased the Georgian international from Valencia for an initial £25.6 million ($34.2 million) in the summer of 2024 before loaning him back to the Spanish side last campaign. Multiple Bilbao players and staff clearly remembered Mamardashvili. Unai Simon, a Spanish international and the team's starting goalkeeper, smiled when he saw the Liverpool player emerge in the tunnel before the goalies entered the pitch together. After the contest, Mamardashvili was captured having a lengthy conversation with a member of the Bilbao staff as the pair entered the tunnel together. Nine of Mamardashvili's 134 appearances for Valencia came against Athletic Club: in them, he kept two clean sheets and recorded just a solitary Georgian's record in La Liga was much better: he kept 36 clean sheets across 127 matches.
