Silverstone fans warned of counterfeit ticket sales by police

Motorsport fans have been warned about buying "potential counterfeit tickets" ahead of next month's British Grand advisory was made as Northamptonshire Police issued an update on its preparations for the Formula 1 event at Silverstone Circuit, which is expected to host about 480,000 people on 3-6 seating for the event has sold out, although a number of general admission tickets remain available for all four force's event commander, Supt Pete Basham, said fans should only buy tickets from official sources and not risk buying from social media platforms. Northamptonshire Police said it would "once again be delivering a robust policing operation in the run up to and during the race event".It said uniformed and plain-clothed police officers would be patrolling the circuit, the campsites and the surrounding road network. There will also be specialist officers at the site, including armed officers, search teams, disruption officers and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) units, it added. The force will also make use of facial recognition technology, having first used the software at the 2023 race. The technology works by using a camera to scan faces to match biometrics against those held on a watch and QR codes will be displayed to "clearly" mark where the live facial recognition is being used, the force added. Supt Basham, from Northamptonshire Police, said: "We are working closely with the event organisers, other emergency services and partner agencies as the event approaches, to ensure Formula 1 fans attending the event have a safe and enjoyable experience, and that anyone looking to commit a crime doesn't succeed."We have many years of experience in the policing of this event. However, this doesn't mean we can afford to be complacent and detailed and rigorous planning still takes place. "Each year brings its own challenges and the security measures in place will be as stringent as ever." Follow Northamptonshire news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.

Police warn of counterfeit tickets ahead of British Grand Prix at Silverstone

Police have warned motor-racing fans hoping to attend the British Grand Prix next month to be on their guard for counterfeit tickets. Northamptonshire Police urged people to be aware of fake tickets being sold on social media platforms and also advised against coming to the event at Silverstone between 3 and 6 July without a ticket. The British Grand Prix is one of the UK's largest sporting events, with over 480,000 people expected to attend and concerts by singers Sam Fender, RAYE and Fatboy Slim. The force said uniformed and plain-clothed police officers would patrol the circuit, campsites and surrounding road network, as well as armed officers, search teams, disruption officers and ANPR units. Live facial recognition technology, which has been used at the grand prix for the last two years, will be in operation again. It scans faces with a camera to match biometrics against those held on a watchlist for posing a danger to the public, such as those who have an outstanding warrant for their arrest. Supt Pete Basham, who will lead this year's policing operation, said: "I would urge people to be aware of potential counterfeit tickets being sold, particularly on social media platforms, and I would strongly advise against coming to the event if you don't have a ticket. "We are working closely with the event organisers, other emergency services and partner agencies as the event approaches, to ensure Formula 1 fans have a safe and enjoyable experience, and that anyone looking to commit a crime doesn't succeed."

Aston Martin reserve gives Lance Stroll injury update amid Canadian GP decision

Lance Stroll is in a race against time to be fit to race for Aston Martin at the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend after surgery on his hand and wrist which saw him withdraw from the Barcelona F1 race Lance Stroll "will do everything he can" to race at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix. That was the update provided by Aston Martin reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne, who is one of those who could replace the Montreal native if he is not fit to take part in his home Formula 1 race. Stroll withdrew from the Spanish Grand Prix on June 1, the team confirming he had been suffering with pain in his hand and wrist for around six weeks. It was linked to the damage he did in a pre-season cycling accident in pre-season training two years ago, which required surgery. ‌ It was also announced that he would undergo another procedure to help relieve that pain in the long-term. That operation took place after the Barcelona event that he missed, pitting him in a race against time to be fit for the upcoming Canadian GP. ‌ Aston Martin have yet to communicate any decision over who will drive alongside Fernando Alonso this weekend. Presumably, they will wait for as long as they can before making a final decision. Both their reserve drivers, Vandoorne and Felipe Drugovich, are scheduled to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend. But their respective teams each have a reserve standing by and Aston Martin have the power to pull either of them away to compete in Montreal if required. Drugovich is set to drive for Cadillac at the world-famous endurance event but Earl Bamber is on standby to take over if the Brazilian gets the nod to make his F1 debut. And Peugeot have Theo Pourchaire hanging around in case Vandoorne is told to hop on a flight to Canada. He said: "I think Lance is in good shape and has good doctors working with him. He will do everything he can to be at the race in Canada." ‌ Realistically, Aston Martin have until Friday night at the latest to make a decision. That's because, to be eligible to take part in qualifying for an F1 race, a driver has to have at least taken part in one of the three practice sessions held beforehand. The Montreal event is not a Sprint race and so FP3 is scheduled for Saturday as usual. A reserve driver would need to jet from France to Canada and be refreshed enough to drive in that practice session if he is to race on Sunday. The other option available to Aston Martin could be Valtteri Bottas, who will be in Montreal anyway in his role as reserve driver for Mercedes and their engine customer teams. It is understood, though, that the team would prefer to field one of its own reserves if possible.
