SEC lookahead: Is a young Georgia still a dangerous Georgia?

ATLANTA — At SEC Media Days this week, Texas is the story. (Well, aside from the rumor that Nick Saban is returning to coaching. But that's just a rumor. For now.) Texas as a program is the likely preseason favorite to win the SEC, and Arch Manning is the week's most anticipated student-athlete participant. Burnt orange is doing its best to smother the SEC.
Kirby Smart and Georgia would like a word.

Georgia is now two-plus years removed from its last national championship, which in the Kirby Smart era qualifies as a Saharan dry spell. The Dawgs missed out on the final four-team playoff after the 2023 season, and fell to Notre Dame in the quarterfinals of last year's expanded CFP after losing starting quarterback Carson Beck to injury.
So Georgia has something to prove, but it will have to do so with a class that has zero familiarity with winning national championships.
'Our team is going to be comprised of 54 percent first- and second-year players,' Smart said. 'The COVID class (with an extra year of eligibility) has kind of aged out, so we had multiple players that were in their fifth and sixth year last year, especially across the offensive and defensive lines.'
Naturally, Smart is spinning that youthfulness into a positive, noting that the extremely young class brings 'youthful exuberance' to Athens.

'I think the biggest thing that separates college football teams today is complacency among players versus fire, passion and energy among players,' he said. 'Our players need to bring juice and energy each and every day. If they don't, they'll be confronted by the players that do.'
One of those newcomers: quarterback Gunner Stockton, who was pressed into emergency service late last year but now has the starting job outright. 'He's the kind of kid you want at the front of the line, and he leads from the front,' Smart said. 'He's going to be a big part of our program this year in leadership.'
Smart hinted at the Georgia program's largest question mark — the offensive and defensive lines — and later in his press conference on Tuesday indicated why there might not be a quick fix if the team starts slow in its effort to develop its younger players.
'You don't speed up development,' he said. 'If you want to speed up development, then you're probably looking for shortcuts that don't exist. You want to develop somebody. It takes time. It takes reps. We can't replicate reps faster. We can't speed up a guy's transition.'

In other words, Georgia won't have much time to get those youthfully exuberant players up to Smart's standards. The Bulldogs will begin the season with two non-conference games to provide them a little bit of a buffer before diving full-fledged into its SEC schedule, which begins with Tennessee and Alabama and runs right on through that date with Texas in mid-November. (Smart didn't say it, but we will: the Dawgs beat Texas twice last season. Just so everyone remembers.)

On the plus side, while Georgia's 2025 schedule is a brutal one, it breaks very much in the Dawgs' favor — the two marquee games, Texas and Alabama, will both kick off between the hedges at Sanford Stadium. Georgia will need to go on the road to face Tennessee and Auburn, and neutral-site trap games against Florida and Georgia Tech also loom, but having a home crowd behind them for the two biggest games of the season will be immensely valuable.
Smart remains one of the sharper observers of the college football condition, though obviously with a pro-coaching bias. He sees a way through college football's current travails, and to him, it's all about having the right people in the right places.
'College athletics and college football is not broken,' Smart said. 'I would say that it's in a time of change and influx, that … you have to navigate better than your competitor, whether that's conference to conference or within your own conference. We continue to find ways to do that at the University of Georgia. We sell relationships over transactions. We think the relationship still wins out because the relationship allows you to push people and demand excellence, and we're going to continue to do that at Georgia.'
It's worked out pretty well so far.

MLB insider expects Astros to be aggressive at trade deadline

The Houston Astros have one of the weaker farm systems in baseball, especially for a team sitting atop their division. But, despite their weaker farm system, the Astros and general manager Dana Brown can still make moves at the deadline. And during an appearance on Foul Territory, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal believes the Astros, despite their weaker prospects, will be involved at the deadline. Rosenthal had a firm stance that the Astros would be aggressive at the deadline. "I do think they will be aggressive," Rosenthal said. "The one thing they have also needed and have talked about is a second baseman, preferably a left-handed hitting second baseman. If the Rays go over the next ten days, maybe they make Brandon Lowe available... I do expect them to be aggressive." Houston has a couple of areas it could look to improve. A left-handed hitting batter has been one mentioned often as a potential fit for the Astros. With Yordan Alvarez out, there is a severe lack of left-handed hitters in the lineup. While Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe, who'd fill the lefty hitter and second base needs, would be an ideal pickup, the odds aren't great. The Rays are in solid shape to contend, just 1.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox for the Wild Card spot. MORE: Astros writer reveals 'ideal outcome' at MLB trade deadline But if he were to be available, as Rosenthal says, Lowe would be a great option. Outside of second base and a lefty hitter, the Astros could also use a left fielder and another starting pitcher, ideally one who'd take over as the team's number three starter. Being aggressive at the trade deadline could be more challenging for the Astros than for other teams. A weaker farm system could lead the Astros to get creative at the deadline, especially if Rosenthal's expectation for the team to be aggressive comes true. Sitting atop the AL West, the Astros should take this chance to bolster their roster. If every player can get healthy, and they can add a few of the positions of need, the Astros could be one of the top teams in the league and contend for a World Series in 2025. John Mateer shares excitement about playing with Deion Burks

The wide receiver position has not seen a lot of its way in the last year and a half at the University of Oklahoma. Heading into 2024, it was arguably the deepest position on the roster. However, injuries decimated the wide receiver room, and it led to an offense that struggled week in and week out to find any consistency in the passing game. Deion Burks made it four games before getting injured against the Tennessee Volunteers. In his first three games of the season, Burks recorded 22 receptions for 169 yards and three touchdowns. But the injury in the Tennessee loss kept him out until the second-to-last game of the season against Missouri. In the loss to the Tigers, Burks suffered a concussion that would keep him out of the LSU game to close out the season and the Sooners held him out of the Armed Forces Bowl loss to Navy. But in limited time, Burks showed off the ability to get open, especially in the red zone. His speed will create problems for defenses. He has a chance to be a problem in offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle's system this season. The Oklahoma Sooners need a healthy Deion Burks to have a resurgent season. He was one of the more sought-after players in the 2024 transfer portal and had a huge spring game last year. Now, it's time for that potential to come to fruition. At SEC media days, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer spoke about where Burks is at ahead of the 2025 season. "I'm super proud of Deion," Mateer said. "He had a rough year last year, on and off the field. But he's super promising. He cares a lot about football and he cares a lot about the Sooners." Though he didn't have the production he would have liked last year, Burks had the opportunity to go off to the NFL, or even leave in the transfer portal like Nic Anderson, Andrel Anthony, Jalil Farroq, J.J. Hester, or Brenen Thompson did. But Burks opted to return to the Sooners for the 2025 season. But Burks is now a leader for a completely remade wide receiver group. The Sooners will need his veteran presence as they welcomed seven new wide receivers this offseason and had four true freshmen returning from the 2024 season. Burks is the veteran presence in the group. The talent is there. The attitude and the effort are there. He just needs to stay healthy to realize the potential that could put Burks among the top wide receivers selected in the 2026 NFL draft. "I'm super happy for him and proud of him, just where he's came with his body and his mind," Mateer continued. "He knows the game of football a lot better this year than he did last year. Super proud of him. I'm real excited to play with him." The Sooners are hoping for two of their wide receivers, Javonnie Gibson and Jayden Gibson, to return for the start of the 2025 season. But it's Burks who has the biggest opportunity to thrive in Arbuckle's spread-out passing attack. His quickness, speed, and ability to create after the catch will be a problem against the SEC. SEC football media poll drops. Where does LSU football rank?

LSU football is projected to finish fourth in the SEC media title poll, released Friday. Texas led the way, followed by Georgia, Alabama, LSU, and South Carolina to round out the top five. The Bulldogs and Longhorns finished first and second, respectively, last season. The Tigers return quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, running back Caden Durham, and a core of defensive leaders from last season. The pair, along with linebackers Whit Weeks and Harold Perkins, earned preseason All-SEC honors from the AP. Head coach Brian Kelly's staff brought in the top transfer portal class of the 2025 cycle following a win over Baylor in the Texas Bowl. By reforming the wide receiver and defensive end rooms in particular, the Tigers are primed to make a run at the SEC title. Texas, Georgia, and Alabama all field first-time starters at quarterback in 2025. The Longhorns' Arch Manning is already generating Heisman Trophy and NFL Draft buzz. SEC football projected order of finish rankings SEC Champion Poll LSU was given 20 votes to win the SEC championship in 2025.
