If you're chronically online and, more specifically, a frequent #HairTok watcher, then you've come across several videos on ingredients like rosemary oil or even Amla oil celebrating their purported growth-inducing benefits in hair growth oils and hair masks. Yet amongst all these buzzy ingredients, one stalwart remains a constant in the hair growth conversation: castor oil. This time-tested treatment has been woven into the tapestry of generations and is likely a familiar presence in your own hair care routine.
'Castor oil is the world's oldest and most popular herbal remedy for hair oiling,' says Nikita Mehta, co-founder and creative director of ayurvedic haircare brand Fable & Mane. It's rich in fatty acids like ricinoleic acid, making it very viscous, nourishing, and moisturizing. It's proven to coat the shaft of the hair, reducing damage and helping it grow longer and stronger.'
With 566 million views dedicated to #castoroil on TikTok and over 258,000 posts on Instagram, users claim the oil does everything from making hair shinier and bouncier to growing it thicker and longer. But are these claims legit? We ask three experts about the benefits of castor oil and exactly how to use it.
Dr. Nikki Hill is a board-certified dermatologist and hair restoration expert.
Bridgette Hill is a certified trichologist, colorist, and scalp therapist.
Nikita Mehta, co-founder & creative director of ayurvedic haircare brand Fable & Mane.
Castor oil, also known as Ricinus communis, is a nutrient-rich vegetable oil made from castor beans. Although it originates in tropical East Africa, it is widely used in India and the West Indies for cosmetic and medicinal purposes. Castor oil is usually clear or pale yellow unless derived through roasting or boiling, which is known as black castor oil.
Down to a molecular level, castor oil is a long-chained fatty acid. 'Fatty acids provide essential proteins and nutrients to hair follicles and prevent hair follicle inflammation,' says Bridgette Hill.
Aside from being anti-inflammatory, castor oil has a few other noteworthy properties. 'Some benefits of using castor oil include increased gloss or shine of the hair, increased hair shaft flexibility by coating the hair shaft, [and] providing antimicrobial properties,' says Dr. Hill.
'No studies exist showing castor oil can increase hair growth >1cm/month, which is the FDA standard of hair growth,' says Dr. Hill. 'However, I have patients tell me differently all the time. Additionally, 90 percent of castor oil is made up of the fatty acid ricinoleic acid. [It] is known to stimulate the Prostaglandin E2 receptor, leading to blood vessel dilation. When applied to the scalp, increased blood vessel dilation increases the flow of oxygen-rich and nutrient-rich blood to the powerhouse of your follicle, the dermal papilla, or the root of the hair.'
Bridgette Hill agrees that castor oil indirectly promotes hair growth. 'Because of the nutrients in castor oil, it protects the hair follicle from outside cellular and tissue invaders that destroy the health and vitality of the hair follicle.'
The short answer is yes to the eyebrows, but be cautious with the eyelashes. 'If there isn't an allergy to castor oil after patch testing, it is safe to use on the eyebrows,' says Dr. Hill. There is no safety data about castor oil and eye health, so I would be cautious and speak with an ophthalmologist about applying castor oil in close proximity to the eye.'
Although castor oil is widely used, it is not meant for everyone. Therefore, it is important to perform a patch test before applying it to your scalp. 'Apply a small amount behind the ear or the inner upper arm for a week,' says Dr. Hill.
Once you determine that castor oil is compatible with your scalp, the next step is selecting the right amount. 'Hair oiling can work for all hair and scalp types, but the secret to how much [ingredients] lies in the formula,' says Mehta. Her rule of thumb: the purer the oil, the heavier it'll be. Here, Dr. Hill also goes into more detail:
The best way to use castor oil is on dry hair and scalp. 'Warm the oil between your palms first, then work it through the roots and massage onto the scalp, focusing on the crown chakra (the top of your head) to relieve tension and feelings of stress,' Mehta says. After combing the excess through to the lengths of your hair, let it sit in for 20 minutes or even overnight. 'Rinse it thoroughly with lukewarm water and then shampoo out. You may need to double cleanse to ensure you remove all traces of the oil, and I usually skip the conditioner after hair oiling as the oils provide so much hydration. You'll notice a difference in hair hydration and, if done consistently, you'll see hair growth in length and volume.'
All of our hair experts recommend cold-pressed castor oil.
'Cold-pressed castor oil can be used on the hair shaft,' Dr. Hill says. Mehta describes it as pale gold in appearance, adding that since 'castor oil is so thick and can 'stick' to hair, it's best used when diluted with a lighter carrier oil, such as coconut or almond.'
If you're interested in trying black castor oil, Dr. Hill notes: 'It should be applied only to the scalp. If black castor oil is applied to the hair, a cuticle-sealing technique should be used afterward. Both forms will provide sufficient components of ricinoleic acid.'
If you have dandruff, it is best to avoid using castor oil on your hair. Both of our experts say it can make the condition worse.

Tween clothing line Theme is designer by 16-year-old Ariella Maizner

Ariella Maizner is sew talented. At age 6, she took her first sewing class and discovered a natural affinity. At age 9, she launched her own fashion line, Theme, after friends started asking about the feminine frocks she was making and wearing to birthday parties and bat mitzvahs. Initially, she tie-dyed shirts on the roof of her family's Manhattan apartment to sell at boutiques and pop-ups. When she was 10, Rent the Runway invited her to show a collection of sequined hoodies and matching skirts at New York Fashion Week. 6 Ariella Maizner started taking sewing classes at age 6. Now 16, she has her own thriving fashion line, Theme. T H E M E/ Ariella Maizner Now, at age 16, Maizner has a growing brand that's sold at more than 200 boutiques across the country, as well as in department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. Her clothes have been seen on Zaya Wade — the daughter of actress Gabrielle Union and basketball star-turned-Utah Jazz co-owner Dwayne Wade — and TikTok influencer Charli D'Amelio. She's collaborated with the likes of Walmart and State and recently debuted a line of beaded bracelets and charm necklaces for teen mall brand Claire's. 'Ever since I was little, I played dress up,' Maizner, a sophomore at a Manhattan public high school, told The Post. 'I thought, 'Oh, if I can make my own clothes, that would be so cool!'' The first piece she finished was a rainbow-striped maxi dress with a matching belt. Soon, she was sewing herself frocks for her friends' birthday parties and other events — and getting lots of requests from others who wanted clothes like hers. 'That's when I was like, 'I want to make a brand,' because everyone asked me to make things for them,' Maizner said. When she told her mother, Debbi Maizner, then a CMO at JPMorgan Chase, she wanted to start her own line, Debbi was cautious but encouraging. 'I told her: 'We live in the best city in the world. You should meet people and learn from them,'' Debbi — who now handles operations for Theme — told The Post. 'It started as a journey to just support her interests.' 6 Maizner (pictured at age 9) started out designing party dresses for herself. T H E M E/ Ariella Maizner Maizner often would DM designers and entrepreneurs she admired on Instagram and ask to meet with them. 'I would bring all the clothes I sewed and lay them all out, and [they would invite] their whole team to come in, and they would just connect me with other people and give me really good advice that motivated me,' Maizner said. 6 Soon, friends were requesting the dresses she was making. T H E M E/ Ariella Maizner 'When I first met Ariella I was struck by how young she was, but how she knew exactly what she wanted to do,' Minkoff told The Post. Theme is unabashedly girly: tiered ruffled skirts with lace trim, sequin-studded strapless party frocks, frilly tops and tie-dye hoodies and loungewear in pastel hues. Yet Maizner prizes comfort and versatility. Tops come with detachable, adjustable spaghetti straps; skirts have shorts attached to them. One of those designers was Rebecca Minkoff, who has become a key supporter of Maizner's work. 'A really big thing is making sure the clothes are comfortable and the girls feel confident in what they wear,' Maizner said. 'Because I think that's like the biggest thing when you wear clothes: feeling good and feeling yourself. 6 Theme is sold in 200 boutiques across the country, as well as in department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. T H E M E/ Ariella Maizner While Maizner sits in on business meetings, provides feedback to manufacturers and helps conceptualize the brand's photo shoots, Debbi wants to make sure she has time to be a normal teen. 'I want to let her be a kid,' she said. Maizner competes on her school's basketball team, runs track and field and plays tennis. Her favorite subjects are math and photography. On weekends, she goes vintage shopping with her friends and hangs out in the West Village. 6 Maizner's designers are girly but unfussy. T H E M E/ Ariella Maizner And, in between all that, she works on her fashion line. She creates mood boards with vintage photos for inspiration. She sketches silhouettes and sends them, along with color swatches, to the various manufacturers she works with. She tests fabrics and examines every single stitch. Yet Maizner told The Post that she doesn't think of designing as work. 'Whenever I have nothing after school, I want to go to sewing class, because it's my happy place,' she said. 'Honestly, it doesn't feel like a lot to fit in, because I really like doing it. It just feels fun.' 6 When she's not designing clothes, Maizner is an average New York high schooler — playing school sports and hanging out with friends in the West Village. T H E M E/ Ariella Maizner She involves her friends and sisters in the process as much as possible — fittings are like parties. And her rambunctious 7-year-old sister, Noa, is one of her best fit models. 'She gives us really honest advice,' Maizner said with a laugh. 'We always say if she can do a cartwheel in it then it passes the test.'

This Viral "Pitch Perfect" Scene Literally Became True, And Fans Are Kind Of Shocked

In 2012, the world was introduced to the musical comedy Pitch Perfect, and the hilarious characters who made the film so special. And while the movie franchise birthed a ton of iconic one-liners and the US acting career of Rebel Wilson (she was already known in Australia)... ...but what fans didn't expect was the box-office hit foreshadowing the romantic relationships of not one, but two of the stars. Last month, a fan made this revelation about a particular scene, where Rebel Wilson's character, Fat Amy, tells Anna Camp's character, Aubrey Posen, about the likelihood of someone from their a cappella group being a lesbian. "That means that on of us is probably a lesbian," Rebel said in the scene. "You think? Which one do you think it is?" replied Anna. So why did the X (better known as Twitter) user call it a manifestation? Well, if you didn't know, Rebel came out in June 2022 when she hard-launched her relationship with Ramona Agruma on Instagram. The caption read: "I thought I was searching for a Disney maybe what I really needed was a Disney Princess." She ended the message with hearts, a rainbow, and the hashtag #loveislove. The two got engaged in 2023 and reportedly wed in 2024. They were all dressed up for the Renaissance Pleasure Faire. But the cute stories didn't stop there: While neither Anna nor Rebel have publicly identified as lesbians, we still can't help but acknowledge the WLW (woman-loving-woman) relationships they seem to be so happy in.
